    Hi

A4 1.9TDI 2003. Just had an oil change done by National Tyres. I chose them mainly due to price but also because they use Castrol Edge oil.

The car has always been on a longlife service plan, and I was sure to inform the technician that longlife oil was required.

The paperwork shows that they used 0w30 viscosity EDGE, but a simple seach against registration on the Castrol site recommends 5w30.

    The VW spec for 0w30 EDGE is VW 502 00/503 01/505 00

The VW spec for 5w30 EDGE is VW 504 00/507 00

Has the correct oil been used?

Pretty sure it should have been the longlife 111 oil, which is 5W 30, the old longlife 2 oil was 0W 30, always run my 1.8T on 5W 30. Probably be ok but i would change it before next summer.

Should be 505.01 for a PD,the .01 at the end is the important upgrade.

    Hi

    Thanks for your replies

I checked with the garage today in person, and was advised that they would have indeed actually used 5w30 Edge but they had to put 0w30 Edge on the invoice due to stock levels not being available on their computer for 5w30.

So if the engine fails because it does in fact have 0w30 in it...

I would advise in not bothering with the longlife oil service frequency, you are much better off changing the oil and filter every 5k.

Yes I know a lot of people think every 5k is too shorter interval however I have been stung with the longlife service thing and it cost me big(for the record my a4 1.9tdi 130 had full VAG service history). Audi did not want to know, bottom line the oil just sludges up the sump and a will block up a oil way like it did in my case and cause a lifter to run dry and explode and take out the head.

Longlife oil servicing was designed for lease companies to keep the cars on the road, by the time Joe public buys the car the damage is done.

0w30 will not cause a failure. A 0w will protect the oil better when cold as it will be thinner. Castrol say that their new oil rated to 504 and 507, will also comply with previous standards.
    Options being considered:-
    312mm Brake upgrade - Definite
    Remap - Definite
Hybrid Turbo and Custom map - hmmmm
    Decat - hmmm

Fair play, I'm now running a Mk5 Gt tdi 140 and I dump the oil & filter every 5k. I use the VAG Quantum fully synthetic oil and a genuine filter each time, every other oil change I also ues a engine flush too.

After my previous expensive repair I will never do the longlife thing. I even searched for a Golf that had not been exposed to this longlife service thing, it took a while to find but I got one in the end (oh it even has got factory 17" Ronal split rims).

    Cheers

i use 5w30 castrol edge or fuchs titan.
i guess really as long as it's a fully synthetic oil any brand of the right spec will be ok.
long life service intervals are a crock!
even the whole ridiculous platinum spark plugs which last 12-15k.
oil filter and plugs should be changed every 5-6k miles.
