    Hi

Been offered an 2.5 V6 TDi and im wondering how many miles this engine will do if looked after in a normal way? Serviced at correct points etc...?

Anything I should look out for?

This one is a 1999 an has done 145,000 so far with a pretty full service history.

    Cheers
    Ken

Run away from it very fast.
There's always a chance it might be ok, but more than likely the internals of the engine are worn to bits. Doesn't matter if it was serviced weekly, these engines just do this. Do a search for 'cam wear' on here.

Depends on the price and how handy you are.

If you rely on a garage then i personally wouldn't go for it.

If you good with motors and have VAGCOM then go for it.

THe v6 tdi 180 is a great engine, haven't driven it in FWD format though.

The only main issue is cam wear and you should get the cam covers taken off to check. If this is ok then nothing to worry about. Block is very solid.

Mine was still absolutely fine at 230000, still giving the same economy even.

Early 2.5Tdi, did suffer from cam wear, although if it's had regular oil changes then it should be ok, although there's not many that had regular oil changes, another way of telling is that they sound like tanks rather than sounding like a diesel car. Personally i'd only go for the later engines after 02, then again i'd only go for a 180bhp 2.5TDi quattro tip-tronic as i prefer auto's to manuals and all later 1.9TDi use the problematic multi-tronic boxes.

Also check out the mpg on these cars as the 2.5TDi are not a frugal as the spec sheets says and there's plenty of reports / concerns of 2.5TDi mpg figures. i.e people not getting what they expected. I'd recently looked at an (04) 2.5TDi quattro avant tip-tronic in which the computer was only indicating 24.5mpg, even the owner admitted that these cars are not as frugal as he'd expected and that your definetley not going to get anywhere near 40mpg.

First of all the weight plays a big part in fuel ecconomy and the auto gearbox as fitted on quattro models does not help fuel ecconomy. The 25Mpg you seen was town average consumption and you will get 40Mpg only on motorway. Hauling nearly 2 tonnes of weight + 4 wheel drive does not help at all + the engine is fairly quick for modern standards. If fuel ecconomy is your thing then go for the 1.9 if you're after a silky smooth engine, then go for the v6 tdi. Many folks forget the specs of the v6 Tdi are very close to that of the v6 petrol wich will have twice as worse fuel economy while not much performance improvement. I drive on the continent on a regular bassis and the 1.9 is a no-no for me: noisy and not that economical when pushed hard. The v6 is the best motorway cruiser and it will upturn roots with the massive torque available from just 1500 rpm's. The camshaft wear is due to impropper oil services- read Longlife service intervals- and its mainly an urban mith. I had worked on engines with 200k+ and the cam wear was minimal. Many cars have "massaged" odometers and i would rather buy a higher mileage motorway used car than a "low" one used every-once in a while in town....
