  1. How to tell CR from PD engine?

    Hi All,

I am looking at A3 Sportbacks with the 140bhp diesel engine and DSG gearbox, 2006/2007 models (or thereabouts).

Is there an easy way to tell if the engine is a CR or PD version?

    Thanks,

    Mike.

CR wasnt available in 06/07 so they will all be PD versions.

Ah, thanks. When did the CR engines come in, and how would I tell?

    Mike.

Not sure when they came in but I think the CR engine has a single exhaust rather than the twin on the PD version.

No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong !!!

You can also look at the engine code printed on the sticker in the spare wheel well (or in the front of the service book) and compare it with other cars with known engine types.

My A6 with 2.0 TDi 170 CR engine has an engine code of CAHA and Mrs F's TT 2.0 TDi 170 CR has an engine code of CBB.

Isaac was spot on, though - a 2006/2007 car will have the old PD engine.

    Cheers!

Hi MF, your missing a digit on the Mrs engine code, all CR engines have 4 digits, I'm guessing that should be CBBB!

Doh! The sticker in the spare wheel well lists the engine code as "CBB CBBB" - it's typical of me to get it wrong when there's a 50:50 chance!

CR for both 140 and 170 came in late 08/58 plate diesels - PD will sound more like a diesel!.
I got a 2.0T 58 plate & so was looking at all the options so can remember the change - it came in with the facelift.
CR 140 had two pipes until stop start version came in.
    CR170 still has two pipes.

Did you choose the car in the end?

Budget is looking a bit restricted at the moment, so I am looking at 08 140bhp CR diesel Jetta Sports atm. Finding it hard to get excited about them though. I know it's mainly styling, but Audis look so much nicer!
