Just had my 06 2.0 TDI serviced at an indy garage (VW specialist).

The invoice says premium 5w 40 oil was used. It does not mention the VW spec.

I changed from long life to annual servicing, and before I was using 5w 30 (VW 507).

Have they used the correct oil?

    Can I add 5w 30 to it (I still have 3L!!)?

    Cheers

1stly I'd say no they haven't used the right oil this has been discussed here to some depth. See thread https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=103144

    2ndly nope I wouldn't mix oils

Thanks for the reply. That thread suggests that the 505.1 spec oil, which can be used for fixed service intervals, is likely to be 5w40 - so I think it will be OK.

I'll take your advice on not mixing oils, I'll have to buy more!

    Cheers

Not all 5W-40 oils are approved to 505.01 specification . If it hasn't got the spec number on the container it's not approved . The 505.01 spec is important in that this oil was released for VW PD engines to provide the high oil shear strength required by the PD engine to combat the high unit injector camshaft loading. If you use other oils that do not meet this spec , then you run the risk of high camshaft lobe wear.

The stuff I have is Drivetec 5w40 fully synthetic spec VW 505.00 so from what you're saying he couldn't use it anyway or could he?

because it is dirt cheap compared to most oils comes in @ £20/5l from my local motorfactors

505 spec oil was OK for the old pre PD engines ( before 2001) . These pre PD engines had conventional high pressure pumps ( mounted on outside of engine ) and injectors.
PD engines with unit injectors with pumps / injectors inside the engine need the 505.01 spec for the reasons mentioned in previous post.
