    Dear All,

    I need a little help from yourselves diagnosing a problem with my Dad's GF's Lupo 1.4 16v.

I'll start at the beginning, the car has never run quite right and used a little oil, we found out why recently when the piston ring on no.4 failed and junked the engine

I have replaced the engine with another unit and have connected it all back up again but it's presenting an idling and throttle body issue.

    I'll explain:

The car will start and idle very lumpily (around 500-750rpm) and is a little louder than it should be, you can rev it and it smoothes out a bit but still seems a little lumpy.

If you leave it idling, after a couple of minutes the idle will increase to 1000rpm and smoothes out, however, you can't rev the engine at all - it's a electric TB/DBW by the way.

Throughout all of this the ECP and Engine Electronics lights remain lit/blinking.

As the engine has been replaced, the battery has been removed, I have noticed that in this forum people mention re-adapting the throttle body - do you think this could be part of the problem?

The plugs and injectors seem to be fine.

Because of the failed ring on the old engine there was quite a lot of oil blowby and I think some of this may have made it into the TB & EGR valve, could this cause some of the problem too?

    Any help apprieciated.

    Cheers,

    Jami.

You have to start by removing and cleaning the throttle body. Then it has to be set up on a diagnostic machine but it sounds like you may also have an EGR valve issue which itself may respond to be reset. This can only be done using a diagnostic system such as a registered copy of VCDS or another form of professional diagnostic equipment and the operator has to know what they are doing.

    Dear Crasher,

    Thank you for your message.

I have cleaned the throttle body and EGR valve throughly and have refitted them. The problem mentioned before is still presenting itself.

I had to move the car a short distance earlier and noticed a couple of things, firstly, the car is very low on power, has a smoky exhaust and the cat and manifold appear to be getting very warm - is it usual on these engines for the cat to glow cherry red? The engine isn't overheating, the gauge and fans operate normally.

I see you're also based in Nottingham, can you recommend a suitable technician with the software you specified locally (preferably mobile)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind Regards,

    Jami.

As I said, the ECU MUST be re-adapted to the throttle body and EGR valve, you could fit every single part on the car new and you would not be able to avoid this. No the cat should not glow cherry red. You could bring the car into me but I cannot come out and do that.
