A4 2.0 petrol - noise on cold start

Hi,

Has anyone heard of/got this problem?

My 2001 - 2.0 petrol on cold start sounds like a diesel for the first second or two, it must be the stage before the oil is pumped up in to the engine.

Any tips or advise would be very much appreciated.

yes it is were the oil has not reached the top of the engine, nothing to worry about. it could be worsened by the oil pick up line being partially blocked and restricting the flow of the oil to the top of the engine.

The oil leaks down more than normal from the hydraulic tappets - due to wear usual on high mileage engines. Sounds nastier than it is but doesn't hurt anything.

Ignore both the above posts.
mine did this, i thought it was an oil pick up, turns out the oil pick up was the original problem but this lead to failure of the cam chain tensioner.
£800 later my car is silent, having had:
Cam chain tensioner
cam belt fitted
sump cleaned out along with oil pickup
new oil pump.

get it attended to asap!

Ok, when was oil last changed? You use good quality, correct grade oil and genuine filter?
Could just be cam adjuster, my old B5 did it for a second on cold start, but nothing to worry about if it is.

By now you are probably wondering if you should be worried or not.
Without hearing your engine none of us can make statements as to which course of action you should take.
In my experience, not only on Audi engines but any engine new or old and worn ,can sound a little harsh on start up from cold and this usually, as stated above, usually to do with oil not yet getting to the top end, and quite normal.
NWMLARGE, makes a valid point based on his personal experience, but to ignore the other remarks above could soon have somebody who is less than familiar, panicking.
Best advice is to have somebody whos opinion you trust to take a listen and take appropriate action as advised

panicking is good! i ignored the problem for ten k and cost myself 4x what it would have !

get it to a decent vw/audi specialist asap and get them to diagnose.

Please do not take offence all but i must first say ;

DON`T PANIC !!!!!

I have had this noise coming from my 1.8 b5 passat for nine years now.It all started at 33.000 k. thats when i bought the car.Maybe the previous owner sold in a panic i`ll never know.
Thinking back the whole event troubled me no end,was it worse in cold weather,yes it was.Did it happen all the time ,no it didn`t.Will it do it again if i turned off the engine and re-start,no it never did.
Countless trips to my local vw sevice department as the car was still under warranty.Even an independant engineers report for what it was worth.
At the end of the day it`s no worse now than nine years ago.

137.000 miles later and nothing has changed,

The funny thing is that if you read the vw vehicle hand book it even says a noise may be heard for a few seconds on start up !

Depending on your exspectations of a petrol engine,if a rattle now and again on start up gives you the ebejeebees,steer clear of diesel engines !
