Towing Capacity

Hi People
Whilst I am still waiting for a build date of my A6 Avant Le Mans 2ltr TD or what ever they are called now Can anyone help me.

My wife now thinking of buying a carvan......

Can anyone tell me what the max tow weight for this car is. The sales book reckons 1600kgs, my dealer reckons 1800kgs and the local caravan centre reckon 1400kgs whch puts the downer on the van she likes but keeps my money in the bank a bit longer!!

I would like to know also what the gross train weight is. If anyone can help I would be happy chappie

seems to suggest 1600kg
I have a 3.0 tdi which I believed to be 1900kg, so probably figures.

Thanks, I too have looked at that but this is where the confusion starts. According to my dealer this weight is incorrect they don't have one in stock as they said it may be in the handbook which is more acccurate. I've checked what car etc and they are all differnt by as much as 250kgs

It will be in the handbook, mines in there. What caravan do you hope to tow? We're going back to caravanning next year.

a tip to note, the general consensus is you should not pull more than 2/3rds of the towing vehicle's unladen weight.

I'm not quite sure what van you're looking at that's coming in at more than 1400kgs though?

From the handbook for my 2.0 TDI Le Mans Avant:

kg manual / kg automatic

Kerb weight: 1710 / 1735
Gross weight: 2265 / 2290
Unbraked trailer: 750 / 750
Braked trailer up to 8% inclines: 1800 / 1800
Braked trailer up to 12% inclines: 1600 / 1600
Weight of vehicle + trailer up to 12%: 3875 / 3900

Hope that helps.

Edited to add: There's a footnote in the handbook that says the trailer weights given are for a factory-fitted towbar. A non-factory towbar might have different limits I guess.

If you get time could you also get the weights off the VIN plate under bonnet?

My dealer gave me slightly differing figures but reckons the ones off the vin plate are the ones. They don't / won't / can't be bothered to help and the sales side is what I didn't expect in that " we have your money and you want a car"

Happy to help but I've just been out to look and there's no rating plate visible under the bonnet. Can anybody tell me where I'd find it? I don't have time to explore or remove trim at the moment.

Should be a silver coloured plate with the veicle chassis plate on with all axle weights.
Mate has an A4 and its on the drivers side suspension mount.

It's weird - the plate was on my old A6 on the slam panel but there's nothing on the new one:

It may be under the floor in the boot but the boot is full of camping gear at the moment so I can't easily check. I'll try and remember to check when it's empty again.
