Does anyone know the correct interval for the [ AEX 1.4 8V] engine. The VW service book only states 'inspect and check tension' No specific calendar or mileage replacement. I've read 60k and 4years?

The timing belt on the AEX does not have an official change interval; it is based on condition although 100K miles was considered to be the limit. Now it is generally accepted that the mileage interval is 60K miles or the standard change time interval for petrol engines of 5 years. It is usually the tensioner that fails anyway and this should be replaced together with the water pump.

Gents , thanks for the concise info. I have retained this and will adopt the policy. Last question if the pump is replaced is there experience of a quality item [ non QEM} that will go beyond 60k?
    Thanks Anton

I always fit genuine cam belt kits and genuine exchange water pumps as they come with a two-year labour inclusive warranty. One chap on here had his belt fail and damage the engine, Audi repaired it all under warranty even though they did not fit the parts.
