    Hi,

Could anybody possibly end my frustration with the multi CD player in my Passat ...... The problem is that I can play the discs fine up to track 8 ... After that it just jumps. This is with copied discs or genuine ones, it is always track 8 onwards that jumps. It does it with all the CD's aswell whether it be disc 1 through to disc 6. I have tried cleaning the laser with a CD cleaner but it still does it.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

It sounds like the laser position motor. The discs read from the inside-out, so as the laser gets say 3/4 out maybe the laser motor is binding.

All you can do is strip it down and inspect.

If the laser is mounted on a (motor-driven) screw,
you might get away with a drop of light oil on the threads

Thanks for the replies. I have bitten the bullet and purchased one from the dreaded EBay. I shall see what happens. I can take the old one apart and see what the problem is now I have a spare.

    Cheers

Well I changed the disc player and the problem is still there...... What the hell could it be, surely the two players can't have exactly the same fault. The new one does exactly and I mean exactly, the same thing.

Any ideas please would be gratefully received.

Just played a genuine cd ...not a copied disc and it seems to play them with no problems. Do you think it could be that the copied discs just aren't compatible ? Is there any way of connecting an mp3 player ( 5mm jack lead ) to the system ? I think I need to take a different route to be able to listen to music in this car....

I've sorted this if anybody else is interested....... The problem is that the VW disc changer is not particularly good quality and as a result will not read certain discs.
The problem is that the discs are read from the inside out and as a result the laser has to travel a lot further when it gets to the outer extremities of the disc. Thus the speed difference means that the "pick up" of the laser has to be far better and faster.

Basically, if you turn down the speed of the burning when you do your own discs.... It sorts it.
The quality of the discs is key aswell. If you have a set of 100 discs for £5 then they wont work properly and so when it gets to the outer tracks ( 8 + ) it skips as it cannot read the disc quick enough

Secret......... Buy good quality discs and turn the speed of burning down ( now I've wasted £50 on a new changer ).

Thanks for bringing us upto date. Wish more would do that

You could always enroll the multi-changer in a speed-reading class

    Regards
