Wondered if you could recommend a good ,perhaps synthetic, oil for a 2.0 140 bhp TDI that will not cost me a fortune if that exists please?

I assume if the recopmmended service is not till 20,000 it's going to be a good investment.

    Thinking about £30 max

Any suggestions greatly appreciated as always.

Mobil #1 "esp" 5W-30 long life full synthetic oil is suitable for petrol & diesel VW engines ( specs 504 & 507 respectively) This is the highest oil spec specified by VW . ASDA sell it at £32 for 5 liters or about £8 per liter. You should always buy oil by the VW spec number and not by the generic oil description to avoid getting the wrong oil . If the oil container label does not have the correct VW oil spec on it then its not the correct oil . Your car manual should have the oil spec numbers . N.B. The newer VW spec 507 is downwards compatible with all PD & CR TDI engines.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
That's a great deal Asda are doing but unfortunately I have no stores anywhere near me.

Will keep an eye open for these brands.

    Any others recommended guys?

    Thanks again!

Try Tesco, Mobil 1 0-30 @ £16 for 5 litres, it's old stock stuff but is a 505 spec, should be ok for top up and 10k intervals, it's synth oil anyway.

The Tesco oil with a spec of about 505 and might be synthetic is NOT suitable for a PD Passat. You need, as has been said, oil to spec 507.00.
Why, when driving a good car, with 18000 mile oil change intervals you are mean with your oil I cannot understand.

Please know what you are talking about before replying, 505 was the top spec VW oil up until about 2 years ago, 507 is low ash spec oil for DPF cars, 505 is fine in a PD engine.

And it's not about being mean with oil, it's about knowing about marketing, I could tell you something else about oil and PD's, I won't bother though, you'll only come back at me with typical VW sponsored jargon.

I think you will find that the old spec for PD engines was 505.01.
This is not the same as 505.

What always makes me laugh is when correct advice is given and then not taken. It makes me wonder why, when they know better, people bother to ask.

I await your apology for being wrong on this subject.

The lowest grade oil you should use on a PD diesel is VW spec 505.01. If the container does not have this spec number on the label its not suitable. This oil (505.01) is commonly called "PD" oil and the only grade I'm aware of is SAE 5W-40. This is the spec with the high shear strength specially developed to deal with the high camshaft loading imposed by the unit injectors. You could also use the long life version 506.01 or the new 507 spec. But why use anything but the later spec oil when they are all about the same price ? On no account use anything other than these 3 grades or you risk excessive camshaft wear. If you check your manual for the car you will find this same information.
Spec 507 is fully downwards compatible with all PD engines and is the oil which VW dealers would use for your PD engine irrespective if has DPF or not or whether it is on Fixed interval or variable service interval. I have this confirmed by my local dealer who I trust and have dealt with for many years. As I posted ealier this 507 spec can be bought for £32 for 5 liters at ASDA & 5 liters will leave enough left for top up purposes after an oil change on most 4 cylinder engines.
505 oil spec is only suitable for pre Aug 1999 Diesels without PD injectors. This was the grade I used in my old early ( march) '99 Golf GTTDI for 145,000 miles.

I'm not going to get into this with you, but I will leave you with this, if you want to pay £60+ for oil, be my guest, I did over 100k using an oil not branded 505 etc, no wear, no turbo failure, no emmisions smoke test failures, and anything synthetic a firm like Mobil makes will do a PD no harm at all, it's a buyers choice, and I choose to believe what I see, not what someone in a marketing dept tells me, most of the time they don't even stick to this in the VW dealers, you'll get a Shell oil or similar, like I said, the choice is yours, and I'm not having another debate on it or the interval times for that matter, but what you said originally doesn't ring mate, 507 wasn't available in 2006, so anyone with a PD registered in that year or before will be using the wrong oil according to you, so what does that tell you.
