As the title suggests. I'm trying to find out which would be the best engine to have in a Passat? Tine as conme to get rid of my 2.0tdi 140 as yet another injector goes.

Is the 1.9 a good engine? How reliable is it? Not bothered about power but good economy would be a must. I just want a Passat that will run and run without me spending a fortune getting it going!

My 1.9 has been great. It isn't powerful at 105bhp but it does me fine.

I have had faster cars with over 200bhp before and don't mind this.

It has only done 30,000 miles and is 3 years old. I bought it with 13,000 miles on it 2 years ago and I have put 700mls of oil in it over the mileage I have covered.

All the problems I read on this site about squeaky dashboards, saw tooth tyre wear, injectors etc I just haven't experienced. Maybe with time things may change.

g-black & rapport25, how many miles have your cars done?

1.9 better by far, no balancer shafts, no siemens injectors. Same engine has been used for years in all VAG models. Most of them don't have DPF either. You can tune the 105 to roughly 130 bhp. But they all have crap steering system, silly handbrake and daft DMF so you can still look forward to those going wrong.

Mine has done a little over 60,000 but no failures as of yet. Just getting worried over the injectors, Rappy.

Well in sayin mine has gone wrong it does have 138k on the clock. But it's only 4 years old. Might look about for a 1.9 or maybe just go for a golf. Would really miss the space though..

Sorry to hear that g-black..my 2.0tdi has done about 104k miles and checking the service history and receipts not one injector has 'failed' in a sence..but i think me turbo needs checking and since ive put new alloys on the car makes a sort of grinding noise like the brakes are stuck on but hey thats another story..

How comes VW dont do a range like Audi with 1.9 2.0 2.5 3.0 etc?

It would need to be one of the early common rail engines. Love the b6 shape and wouldn't like to go older than 4 years. Crackman, sounds like you could be headin the same way I did. My advice to anyone would be, if and injector goes, sell it and move on.

Looking possibly at a new shape jetta under finance. The idea of a warranty is very attractive but I would prob end up voiding a warranty with modifications!
