I have a T5 T28 1.9TDI PD 85ps transporter that has the following problem:-
When I start it from cold I get a misfire and some white/bluish smoke for between 5 to 10seconds. It also starts first turn and after the initial 5-10second period runs perfectly.
I have had it in to the VW van main dealer and they checked it out and changed injector number 4 and also fitted a new injector loom and 4 injector seals that cost me £740 + vat!!. I then got it back and it still had exactly the same problem, so they said it might be that the faulty injector over time has gunked up the cylinder and needs a good run with some Forte Diesel treatment to clean it out. I gave it a good run (to the south of France and back!) and the problem is still there. I rang them this morning after reading various posts to ask them if it could be a coolant temp sensor and they said that they had checked this a no fault codes came up. It is now going back in this week for them to have a look at it.
Anyone got any ideas that might solve it.

I have exactly the same 85bhp engine in my T30 Transporter.
Mine was kicking out grey and blue smoke on start up and ran lumpy for a couple of seconds. Yet it would always start, no question about it.
I changed the glow plugs, problem solved.

I had exactly the same problem with my 1.9 104. I researched on here before i spent out loads, and had my glow plugs replaced - cured the problem straight away!

Hi
I have the same problem and I have replaced the glow plugs and its still the same so I just live with it at the moment. I do find that if the oil level is a little high is worse though.

Ah well, now here's a tale.
After my original post in July 2009, my van was in and out of the van centre for the next 4/5 months and they couldn't locate the problem, so after the following was fitted:-
New injector seals
New injector
New camshaft
After all this I still had the problem, bearing in mind It wasn't under warranty I was starting to get cheesed off with the whole affair and I wasn't getting much help from the van centre. I then wrote a 6 page letter to the Chief exec of Inchcape Retail Plc explaining my issues and threatening them with legal action and hey presto the MD of the van centre suddenly took an interest.
They decided to take the cyclinder head off to have a look and found that I had a bent conrod and and this on start up this was causing the misfire. I had a look and the cylinder was not reaching the top of the head and was lower than the other 3 cyclinders. Not sure what has caused it though, although they said it had been hydrauliced(may have spelt that wrong).
So after a lot of moaning they offered to rebuild my engine and give me my money back or offer me a replacement full engine at cost and free fitting.
So £3500 pounds later my van is now Ok, although it still gives a small whiff of smoke as soon as it fires, but there is no misfire. To be honest, after reading lots on the subject I think most of them do this.
Not sure if this helps, but I understand your frustration.
Stuart.
