Hi...
Trying to compile a list of all the tricks that can be done to your car using VAG.com
1. LED DRL's full brightness all the time when using indicators, fog lights or driving lights.
2. Remove seat belt chime.
3. Auto closing of sunroof or windows when arming the car.
4. Sweeping needles on speedo / rev counter on startup of the engine.
5. Enabling Lap Timer on the DIS.
6. Emergency brake flashing (brake lights and parking lights flash in hard braking)
7. Enable hidden MMI menu.
8. DVD SatNav eject lock.
If you know of any more just add them to the list...
One more thing, does anyone known if it's possible to enable the BLIP on lock and BLIP BLIP on unlock.
I had it done to my Golf GTI and it was great...

I've done all the above apart from 6 - isn't that default.
The first one I did was add "honk on alarm" ;)
I've also changed it so that the rear lights are active with the DRLs.

Where do you get the vag.com kit from?
What about the passenger mirror dipping when selecting reverse?
ScottyUK

www.ross-tech.com (http://www.ross-tech.com) (make sure you're sitting down when you get to the price page)
Mirror dipping is something that only cars with Comfort pack i.e. memory can do.

Cheers Scottyuk, stuff paying that. Would be nice to have the needles bounce round on start up and have rear light on with DRL's but not for that price!

Most people don't buy it for just that.
Both my TT and my S4 were modified so it's nice to be able to keep a look out for any problems before you have to go to the dealer.
As an example, on my S4 the car showed no problems. I plugged in my Vag-com and it showed an intermittent loss of signal from a knock sensor. Now since the car was tuned up to nearly 400bhp, knock sensors are quite important! If I hadn't had my vag-com, I'd have run it until the next variable service e.g. 17k miles without knowing. As it was I took it to the dealer and they resolved it under warranty :approve:
Most Vag-com owners will help other people out. This is where car meets are useful. I've done many peoples cars ...although I'm stupid as the most I've ever taken off anyone in payment is a BigMac meal :o
A token gesture is normally all that is required as people are not just provinding the tool but f course they're giving up their time as well.
Many forums have Vag-com sections where owners will post their locations and offer their services. The only this is....just because someone (i.e. me!!) has the tool and can see the disagnostic messages, it doesn't mean they're an engineer and hence they may not know how to solve any issues found but at least you know about them. ;)

Hi...
That's great...
I've a local VW / Audi Independent service garage that I can go to for VAG.com stuff
Last time I was there for a VAG.com session he charged me £20 + VAT.
I just need a list of what I need doing for when my car arrives.

Can we start adding the code settings, so that anyone like me can print it off and take it to some one and asked them to to this....

What does the hiddem MMI menu give you?
ScottyUK
09-05-2009, 07:59 PM
It gives the ability to access lotsa of options that 99% of people don't know what they do :D
On top of that you can turn on the car battery level graph so that when you go into CAR you have an extra option which shows the state of the battery. To be honest it's a gadget rather than a feature ;)

I seem to remember on my TT it was possible to do a factory re-set which tightened up throttle response etc.Certainly on my Merc C Class I could do this and it was great .It meant if you had been lazy on the throttle for a while you could get a re set which meant it was much sharper. Can you do that on the A4 ?
ScottyUK

You're thinking about the Throttle Body Alignment.
I've not tried it yet but I'd expect so :

would love to have a play around with some of these settings - i'm due a service soon so might see if i can get some changed at same time
anyone had experience of the cheaper Vag-Com cables available on Ebay ?
£30 v's £300 for the rosstech one ?
seems the rosstech one acts as an activation dongle for their software - is the freeware version any good for minor tinkering like altering the settings mentioned ?

You're only paying a bit for the cable. Most of it is to use the software hence why Ross-Tech put a dongle in the cable. You can download a free old version of the software which is fine on cars 5 years old etc but with our using the CAN bus you need a fairly up to date version.
Did you really think people throw big money at it if it could be done very cheap ;)
p.s. You can actually do it a lot cheaper. THere are applciations out there for £25 or so that run on Iphones etc and use wifi to talk to a ODBII adaptor which is about £100.
I know that Biscuit on Tyresmoke.net has this solution but since I'd already bough mine I've not looked into it.

In intend to activate both Brake flashing mods. I did a test the other day and at a 60mph full on emergency stop the hazards didn't come on. No idea why it's not activated as I can't see any downside.
I'm also gonna turn on the flashing brake lights. I've previously looked at an add on device so if the car can do it then why not!
Can you enable quattro with it?

Does anyone know if this works on all models of B8's?
I had my car in at the local dealers for low B/T volume today and asked them to tweek a few bits..
They didn't do this with the comment it only works on RS4's...
Unfortunatley I didn't take the coding info in, so couldn't argue the point or tell them where to look.
Nothing like setting the dealers a challenge!

Just a caution
All changes will be overwritten when your vehicle is connected to vas diagnostic.
One protocol of the dealer vas machine is a comparison test where the server checks for conflicting changes from software installed in the vehicle from launch.Meaning your alterations may be reverted.
Also any code changes will show in the dealer workshop code so if you munk something the dealer can tell and void the warranty on said item if you do irreversible damage.
have a nice day lol

Caution is good as you can do a lot of damage playing with the settings. However the options most people are playing with are the same options that are turned on in other markets and done by many many people without issue.
If a dealer was paid to do it then I presume you update the workshope server so it doesn't get lost? What if you then move and need work done elsewhere?

I had some retrofits done by my local dealer and was told in simple terms that the Audi server is updated so wherever I take my car in future, as long as it is a franchised operation, the dealer diagnostics will take whatever the Audi server says and leave the car with those authorisations.
Caused my local official dealer guru quite some grief when retrofitting the AMI but a print out was produced (without me asking) to prove the car's new status had been accepted by Audi so it wouldn't be wiped at future service visits.

All changes require a authorisation code called svm, adaptions need no svm code but code changes for example steering column control code change to enable cruise requires a code, this code will input the values into the control units to allow cruise and update the vehicles build list.
So if you retro fit cruise yourself and change steering code and enable engine ecu then your vehicle goes in to the dealer for service or anything else that requires vas hook up the comparison test will revert the code changes.Vas will prompt the user of the error and ask them to continue to reinstall correct long code but also say your engine ecu fails and requires replacemnet the long code is inputed on line so the operator has no input on the code so the code returned will be factory specification for that ecu, cruise not fitted.
Make sense,simples bye bye

30-05-2009, 06:44 PM
I guess what I'm getting as is if I had you within your dealership retrofit cruise control.... and then I move somewhere else and take it in to a different franchise group, will the new Audi tech (should he be doing an upgrade etc) think "hang on this isn't factory spec" or will your modification me updated on a country (or global) wide database?
Couldn't the tech just accept it and apply the changes after the upgrade or are they actually lost with now choice for the Audi techs ?
a8 tech
30-05-2009, 07:06 PM
svm code changes the code so the server always recognises the change.Vas is not like vcds long code helper as the tech has very little information on long code as the server automatically calculates the software installed on the vehicle, only techs who understand long code hex will understand what is what.
Typical long code

ScottyUK
30-05-2009, 07:16 PM
Sorry mate I'm being dumb tonight (Stella aided ;)).
When you say the server will recognise the change does that mean even if I paid a dealer to make the change, when I get the car updated (for whatever reason) I'm at risk of losing that change if done elsewhere (i.e. another dealership franchise)?
a8 tech
30-05-2009, 07:32 PM
It does not matter who changes the code (vcds or vas)if there is no software version manager action code the changes will not be recorded at the fazzet central database for the vehicle so if a code change is detected and there has been no action code request sent then the code will be reversed.
If you say change a adaption setting for radio volume this will stay changed unless the radio is replaced. When the radio is replaced the tech sends the command to the server to replace radio
the server inputs the code the radio had when it left the production line
the change you made to the volume is defaulted as this is only adaption
So if you change any code or adaption and the dealer reverses the change then re input your alterations and they will work again.
ScottyUK
30-05-2009, 09:28 PM
aha! Got it!
So since an auth code is needed, the current VCDS method of reading the dealer code and reappling it won't really help even if Ross-Tech spend some time on it.
On the plus side, if you **** it all up large style then all you have to do is go to the dealers and pay for them to upload the initial codes! :D

As far as I know the latest software only works with genuine cables which have a licence dongle built in.
For B8 A4's you need the very latest software.

This is apparently only meant to be possible with the Comfort Pack / Memory seats :D It's not perfect coz I can't adjust the drop amount but it's another mod for free ;)
I've also seen that you have have memory seats on just the electric seats with a quick code change.

I am not that advanced yet! There does appear to be a lot of tools that you can use while driving to monitor things, inlet temps for example.
Have a look at http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/main_screen.html which gives you an online demo of the tool. I believe you can get a graph of the power while driving so that could help show up the flat spots for the tuning company to look at.

I was shown this fuction on an Audi Drivers Day.
The Instructor said if you don't brake hard enough the hazards don't come on, this was how he could tell if we were emergency braking....

Hi Plife...
Very well impressed with what you have done.
Can you tell me which system / lead you got.
I have read that you can use either 805 or the latest beta version.
I don't think I'll be able to afford one this side of xmas, but I am after a couple of things doing to my A4.
There is a Audi, VW and Seat specialist in town and I shall be ringing them next week to find out if they can do it.
Are you able to do me some screen prints to show them what I need doing.
1. Needle sweep on start up
2. DRL's to stay full brightness (indicators and lights on)
3. Blip / Blip Blip on alarm unlock / lock
4. Emergency break lights flash
5. Lap timer
Thanks

Got the lead from http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=72359 not the quickest but cheaper than Gefden and should work out cheaper than Ross Tech once you include postage and import tax. Then just download the software from Ross Tech. I did start off with 8.05 but read somewhere that the Beta Version offered more for the B8 so have both installed on my laptop, but have been using the Beta Version.
I'll do some screen prints over the next few days.
2. DRL's to stay full brightness (indicators and lights on) - don't think you can have them full brightness with the lights - only with parking lights and don't think we have this on our cars.
4. Emergency break lights flash - do you mean the hazards flash or the brake lights - or both?
Haven't done 3 but will look at that as well for you. It was all a lot easier than I imagined :beerchug:

Hi,
I come from Romania. I have a new Audi A4 1.8 TFSI. from april 2009. I buy from my local dealer a ross-tech interface and i modify the long code of my car.
For lap and gauge test everything is fine. Its work.
Same for alarm bip.
I check the "Emergency break lights flash" and after that i test in real condition this option.
"Emergency break lights flash" doesn't work. I drive my car with 160 km/h. After that i make a full brake, but no flash.
This option doesn't work.
Best regards from Romania.

I have not had any issues with this. Applied the othe day and tested with braking from 50mph as emergency stop - foot on brake as hard as I can. I felt the ABS kick in. Had to turn the hazards off via the button when the car came to a stop.

Hi Guys,
Great thread. Can't wait to set some of these options. Just wondering I did not order the Light Package as was wondering does anybody have the code to enable the lights (exterior) fog/headlights to come on when I unlock the car.
My freind ordered the light package and this is one of the options he has.
Thanks again

P.S. Probably be sick of me by end of week as I get cable on Wednesday and will be playing around with extras.

The Light Package in the UK is for interior lighting and doesn't affect the outside.

Hi Guys,
In Ireland you can either order the SE or S Line Sports options. I went with the S Line Sports option as i got Xenon DRL's, 17 inch, Sports Seats, 3 spoke leather wheel and drop in suspension.
However I had to sacrfice some nice features i.e. Bluetooth, Cruise Control (Added at my own cost) Hill Assist (added at my own cost) Light Package.
I was hoping that the coming/leaving home option could be activated in VAGCOM.
Any ideas??

Plife...
When you get time could you have a look and see if you can find the screen for enabling the Blip Blip on the alarm system.
Found this...
Enabling/disabling doors locked/alarm armed sound: It is possible to enable the beep the car makes when locking doors in European models and likely to disable the beep in U.S. models that beep by default (and vice-versa of course). Just make sure you have the latest VCDS/VAG-COM updates installed and check/uncheck the checkbox Anti-Theft-System: Horn Confirmation active in 46 Central Conv., Long Coding, Byte 01, Bit 2. This may require that factory alarm is installed on the car.
Thanks

i've posted this in the vag-com section but thought i'd repeat the question here just in case :1zhelp:
anyone stumbled across an option to change the RPM change up threshold for the multitronic gear box in sport mode ?
what i'm wanting is to alter the usual rev to the red line behaviour when flooring it - instead making it change up at 4000 before it drops out of the power band - i know i could over-ride with the paddles but i would like to improve the useability of the sport mode
i find sport mode fine unless really flooring it when it revs way too high :(
btw found this thread very useful ! so far have enabled :
needle sweep
rear lights with DRL
turned off seatbelt chime
brake lights flashing on emergency braking
also used vag-com to clear the numerous error codes generated by installing bluefin remap

All so confusing....what's the difference and can the hidden menu be activated on this?
a8 tech
16-08-2009, 05:24 PM
hidden menu can be accessed via address 56 long code helper to add functions or remove them for gen 3 radio as with mmi 2g address 07 adaption channels and coding adds mmi display functions for example to add battery display in mmi 2g goto adaption channel 02 and add 32 to the value then reset the mmi and the display will show.Hard to explain without being sat in a vehicle with vcds connected but if you have successfully changed other codes its pretty straight forward when you add a function if the vehicle doesn't support the hardware it will display for 8k but it will be grey instead of red
Gen 3 radio address 56 is the master for the display screen
mmi 2g address 07 is the master for the display screen
so any additions to the mmi screen set up display are changed in these two control units
If you have 3g mmi address is 5f
Easy example for gen 3 radio goto long code helper in address 56 and change byte 11 for ami function this will then show up in your media display so you need to find the byte for tpms if you wish to activate tpms in the mmi menu.Hope that makes sense
address 56 long code 0503008201048D00035B070800
if you need further info on long code or adaption channels for 8k platform contact rosstech direct the dealers use online coding were svm activation codes are sent to the fazzit server which down loads code changes amongst other things and the information for individual bytes isn't available to the uk dealer network it is available to the German network and this can be accessed via service net which the dealer network has.I work mine out with vcds and write them down

So, If I am reading the Ross-Tech website correctly I'd need the Vag.Com Hex+Can interface at $349. Having read about all the things I could do with a vag.com this seems like reasonable value. (Kind of)
I did a search on the good old "bay of e" and found someone selling a cable for £0.99. Now my guess is that the two are like chalk and cheese. So I've two questions:
1. What damage can be done with a vag.com (Ross Tech) cable in inexperienced hands?
2. What damage / good could be done with an ebay cheapy cable?
Do people return the cars to factory spec when they go back to the dealer or are all these options just that, things that Audi could enable if they felt so inclined. I don't suppose that any of these are in any way damaging to the car or the warranty - are they?
This may go on the shopping list ahead of any tuning... what to do?

quickly reply
1) you are advised to back up all the original setting sbefore you start
2) the cheaperebay cables dont support the B8.
3) the car might get returned to standard when it goes into the dealer and they hook it up to their machine

hello,
i would like to know if it`s possible to activate the right side mirror to tilt down while you are in reverse if the car doesn`t have electric seats ...i have the electric mirrors but they do not fold electronicaly you have to fold them by hand ... can i activate this option via vag com or do you have to have electric seats in order for this to work ...
have tried with vag com the following procedure :
Go to module 52 Door Elect, Pass., Long Coding, Byte 4. If the byte has value 40 (cars without electrically folding mirrors), change it to 4C. If the byte has value 50 (cars with folding or folding/dimming mirrors), change it to 5C
but when i go to module 52 door elect , pass ; coding ; long coding , it does not say mirror tilt or anything , and when i try to change the Byte 4 wich is 41 in my car not 40 it does not work , if i tick the byte 4 check box it changes to 51 and i cannot change that value ...
some help please ? as i have enabled the gauge test and removed the seatbelt chime without a problem but this just doesn`t seem to work ..

I can't see how it's not showing the option under Byte 4 bit 2 for "Reverse Gear Mirror Dipping Active". Regardless of the car, the software should show it.

To do most of the things on the B8 you need the latest cable that supports Can-bus. I also had the old cable and had to spend $$$ to upgrade :(
Software won't help you if you don't have the correct cable.

i think so ...
since i got this cable i installed vcds 805 , i plugged it up to my car , hit the test button , it found my car without a problem , saved the settings ...then i enable the gauge test without any problem , removed the seatbelt chime and recoded the car kit`s language to english (from spanish) so now i have voice commands in english ... and about 4 days ago i thought i should enable te mirror dipping ... and when i tried it gave me the only registered version message ....
didn`t try a read fault codes , or any other operation because i don`t know how to work with the cable ...and i just did the specific instructions wich i found on the ross-tech site :)

John
I guess its the part number of ABS pump has ESP in bigish letters stamped on it, 4 plack pipes coming out the top and 2 out the front. ( just behing the right hand head light. beside the coolant tank)
mine has 8k0 614 51 7?? and 0265 236 188 and 090915/5/2672 on it
as i think the tpms software is either in this unit or the module connected to it.
I am not sure if it turns out we have the same part no the TPMS can be activated using the instructions posted on a previous page.

Guys, I get my A4 Sline Exec in Jan and currently have a Seat Leon with Mini-Can cable. The Leon has TPMS.
If you enable TPMS in the A4 how do you reset the settings after inflating your tyres? Cars from the factory with TPMS have a button to reset this.

Part of the enabling process involves turning on the MMI TPMS screen so that you can calibrate the pressures.

I got this done today and what they did was great but i was late to the garage so i forgot my list and only got The - Speedo done, rear drls, reverse mirror dip, seat belt chime, hazard braking so i forgot loads like The - Blip on lock,TPMS,hidden menu and the garage is going to charge me another £47 to put them on :o
I dont think im going to get the one that keeps the drl's on when you indicate i like the fact they dim i think its clever and i presume its a safety feature so the indicators are more visible???
Any way thanks again plife im sure the reson it went smoothly was down to your email..

There may be a forum member close to you in the Nottingham area with a copy of VAG-COM that would be willing to do the other mods for you in exchange for a pint or two. It's worth asking, I reckon. Take a look here (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=211).

Depends on what ABS module it has fitted :
From "A6retrofit" :
Enabling tyre pressure monitoring: Since this step includes coding the ABS Brakes module and functionality has not been fully confirmed (although it does seem to work for many), I would recommend caution, but I will mention this as an interesting story. Poster "rlarsen" reports, of Audi A4 B8 (A5 is a close relative), at audiforum.us (TPMS just programming?, http://audiforum.us/b8-platform/12077-tpms-just-programming-3.html) that tyre pressuring monitoring seems to be enableable via VAG-COM, for certain ABS module revisions at least. If your ABS module rejects this coding, it might not support TPMS. Apparently 1AT ABS module may be required, 1AS may not work (see part number label in service book). Whether or not this is all there is to this, I recommend following-up on the thread above before doing anything, but again - interesting story and potential there. Note: All this applies to the indirect, ABS sensor based TPMS. Direct TPMS with wheel sensors in some markets is different.
First enable CAR menu tyre pressure entry from the MMI hidden menu (see above for how to access the MMI hidden menu in MMI 2G or 3G) or, if your car has an Audi Chorus/Concert/Symphony radio without hidden menu, check for/enable the tyre pressure checkbox in VAG-COM/VCDS coding for module 56 - Radio. Then in module 03 - ABS Brakes, go to Security Access - 16 (popup in VAG-COM/VCDS should show the security code needed), Coding - 07 and bit 3 in byte 1 set to 1. Then in module 17 - Instruments, go to Coding - 07 and bit 0 in byte 4 set to 1. Afterwards power off, wait some time, reset MMI and clear any error codes. You may encounter an initial error and need to reset error codes twice after storing TPMS values via the CAR menu (see your Audi manual on how to operate the tyre pressure monitoring system). To reset MMI, see: How to reset MMI (http://a6retrofit.tripod.com/articles/resetmmi.html).
Note about radio Chorus/Concert/Symphony: To see how this is done on A4/A5/Q5 cars with radio instead of MMI, see here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278256&page=7.
Note about MMI 3G: Enabling TPMS in the CAR menu is a bit different for MMI 3G than in MMI 2G, see this link: http://audiforum.us/b8-platform/12077-tpms-just-programming-10.html. Apparently you set tires air pressure control to 5 in the MMI 3G hidden menu (see beginning of article on how to access/enable hidden menu) in main/car/carmenuoperation. The link also suggests to enable RDK in main/car/cardevicelist in the hidden menu, but end-result is unconfirmed.

Hi everybody, my 2009 A4 b8 avant has halogen drl of a weird yellowish colur, and I´d like to change them for the high beam lights but working as DRL intensity. Right now, this is my coding:http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/8311/daytimelightoptionsorig.jpg[/IMG]
I´ve tried the option "DRL via front side markers" and the high beams work a drl, but sadly at full intensity...Is there a way to change this and lower the light output? Thanx for reading...

Hi.
Cant remember the module/code for fog lights, but LED's on full Power with main beam is:
Module 09
Chose Secure Access
Chose Adaptation
In channel 3 type "100" (8% or 9% at default - Values bellow 5 turns LEDs off an generate an errorcode and warning in DIS)
And voila, now you have LED's on full power with main lights on.

Hi
Yes you can change that as well. It is the excact same procedure as I described about LED DRL's. The only change is the channelnumber. As far as I remember its either channel 2 or 4 but i will check it out later today and reply back.
Remeber that you need to press "Secure access" and after that choose "Adaptation"

Hi again.
I have the Xenons so I can´t test the settings for you, but I can see the following in the "Adaptation" menu of module 09:
Halogen lights:
Channel 1: Brightness of DRL
Channel 2: Brightness of Mains with Highbeam on
Channel 4: DRL as Positionlight Brightness
In common for all above is a value from 0-100 where "100" is full intensity and "0" is off.
Remember to choose "Secure Access" and enter the code "20113" before pressing "Adaptation"
Hope it helps :D

Wow ! Talk about digging up an old post. This comment was corrected and many of us have it. Mine do go back up once we reach around 15mph. However that's about the lenght of our drive and hence they stop returning when the speed drops. A bit of a pain TBH.

The reason I ask is that I cannot find anything that says it can be fully backed up, I think if this can be done then it would be great as any mistakes' or if you want to put things back to factory settings then it can be done from the backup.

I think all you can do is save the VCDS scan of your car in its current state. This will be the record of the various coding for each module which you can refer to if need. If you want to revert back you will have to manually enter the coding saved.

Many Thanks for your help PNS2007,

Thanks Scotty,
Yes I do understand it is here, but think if someone could put a bit of time in to teach us new guys with the basics it would be a good thing as it is a little bit worrying when you’re playing with so much money.
I know I will share all that I am learning from you guys to other’s on here if needed, not just the tweaks but general information on how to.
Again I appreciate it takes a lot of time and effort to set something like this up, but think it would be a good call for others looking for information which can only make the site a better place to be.

Thanks a8 tech for this,
sorry for all the questions, but as you can see I am not one of these guys that just likes to push buttons to get a few changes done, I want to know more about the Vag software and how it works.
I think for all of us the most important thing is our cars and making sure they are running right first of all and as I can already see with this software this is fairly easy to do, but on a side note it can also be very easy to do something wrong and make the cars system completely obsolete for the purpose it was intended for.
Therefore, is it possible to completely scan the cars system and make a complete backup of all log files that are stored using the VAG com setup? (Something like AUDI has on their main server of the cars codes ECT that have been stored by the technicians.)
I think if this can be done then at least anyone could have half a chance in getting things back up and running again if something went wrong or we imputed the wrong code.
Many Thanks again
Paul

yes you can run a full test instead of gateway installation then simply open each address and copy the long code then save them to a file for reference.

My dealers said they couldn't make the wing mirror dip when in reverse, they said they contacted Audi and this is only available on the A6 and A8.
If I take the VAGCOM instructions with me will they be able to make the changes?
They said to pop in and they'll take another look.
Thanks

Ok guys took the car back in today and told the dealer that I had run an Auto test on the car and it had found the problems listed above, the Audi dealer said that they had also run the same tests and found nothing wrong with the car at all.
Could there be a problem with the Vag.Com kit? Or are the dealers telling me pokies?
Thanks again guys for all your help

Re scan with vcds, if faults present then go to another dealer and ask for the guided fault print out and self diag print out.
Current vas software is version 18.
If there is still no fault recorded send a log to rosstech

This is if you have 3g without phone, depending on the part number its going to be 3g with nav
You fit the microphone pack and enable the phone bingo, you now have mmi 3g with phone
The hardware is already installed in the 5f control unit (depending on pr number)but not enabled if it was not specified
Its been a closed shop on this little retro fit same as ami, where again you add the ami wiring and enable it.
Be interesting to carry this out as there seems to be plenty of ebay sellers offering the service at ££££££.
I became interested in this recently when looking through the green menu for dvd ripping and the owner mentioned he had just had the phone enabled by an ebay seller
Looked at a few different vehicles then went about the long haul google process and forums which have deleted the information for obvious financial reasons
Post up your menu from the settings screen
with bluetooth phone and dvd rip enabled plus ami
98839884
No doubt sds needs enabling plus the usual long code changes for mfsw etc
My interest is for educational purposes

You just need the correct cable as the software is free.
You need a CAN cable. Either the micro-CAN or the HEX-CAN.
The difference is that the HEX-CAN can handle non-CAN bus cars i.e. the older models.

Depending on your location, someone who already has VCDS and lives nearby may be willing to make these changes for you. Most folks on here with VCDS help others for free, or at the very most get beer money.

VCDS arrived today from RossTech.
Gague sweep enabled - nice
Flashing hazards on emergency braking - we'll see
TPMS didn't work at first attempt - suspect "wrong" ABS / ESP module?
Persuaded the wife that this kit will pay for itself because it allows me to wind back the electronic handbrake for changing rear pads (stand alone device to do that was going to be 80 GBP) and should also help identify any fault codes when the car gets chipped in a few months....
Its pretty easy to make the changes. Haven't enabled battery monitor yet - may give that a try another time.
Thanks for this great thread - and to those who have helped me so far. Much appreciated.

I also got back to basics and shone a torch on the top part of the DIS play where the display would be. My Avant has a hidden symbol for convertible roof, active cruise control etc etc but it does not have a logo for headlight on.....just the main beam.

Don't the indicators around the headlight control switch (normally in Auto) change colour depending on whether the headlights are on? AsI recall, with DRL these are unlit, when the lights come on the side-light indicator lights up green and the dipped beam lights up red.
Not ideal but no less useful than having fog lights indicators obscured by the steering wheel.

Think your right Scotty, looks like there is no head/side light indicator to light up on the B8.
I was trying to figure out whether my auto headlights switch on time needed changed now the days are getting a little longer but not easy when it's tough to know when they come on in the twilight/dusk.

Interesting, can't say I've noticed but I'm sure you'll be right as there must be some indication.
I'll try and adjust my natural and comfortable driving position tomorrow so that my legs hyper extend at the knees to hit the offset pedals and now my upper body and neck need to sweep from left to right to observe the light switch. :D

I actually did some testing earlier on the light switch as I too thought that was what we were meant to use.
I found that as soon as the DRLs (in daytime or when acting as sidelights) come on, then the interior lights up i.e. the red LED down lights, the dash, etc and also the light switch. The light switch shows the sides lights symbol as green and then other symbols and just subtley back lit.
I thought turning on the headlights either via Auto (in the dark) or manually turning them on would lights the icon but nothing changes.
I also did the same in daylight and dark with the DRL setting in MMI turned off. It didn't make any difference to the results. Apart from using the satnav (in auto colour mode_ to indicate it, I really don't know.

It had a couple of corrections in it from me too so I was aware of it for a while but thought it was useful to share on here.
One thing I changed today may be useful (or already done) but those with Drive Select :
I coded my car so that the default start mode was "Comfort" since the wife & kids normally use it.
Today I realised (Doh! doh! doh!) that if the default start mode was "Individual" instead then it means we can each have the settings how we want and these are stored per key.
We now get out preferred tailored settings as default rather than just "Auto".
Very happy...but also kicking myself for not realising sooner!
Doh! doh! doh! :aargh4:

Things have gone pretty smoothly: needle sweep, dipping mirror, lap timer all went without a hitch.
However, despite checking that I have module 1AT, I cannot get TPMS working.
When I get to the stage of coding the ABS controller, Long Helper informs me that it does have any codes and I'm obivously not going to start flipping bits blindly.
I have noticed that the controllers that have been found to work seem to starty with 8K0 whereas mine is 8K9 907 379 F - ESP8 quattro H06 0010.
Any suggestions?
