I have an A4 2.5 TDi quattro sport avant with an AFB engine. Manufactured 04/99 but registered 11/00. Is this too old to have remapped?
Cheers.

It cannot be remapped via the obd port but can be done on the bench but might require soldering in new eeprom chips(depending on the ECU number). A decent tunner could do the job. I would look into chipping it though as most maps are not agresive enough and limit the ammount of torque at low revs. Go for old-skool tuning chips like Steinbauer, PSI- Motorsport, Van Aaken, Dragon Motorsport, etc. If you live close to London you could drive either me a6 2.5 tdi or the a4 quattro both fitted with PSI Motorsport chips...you wont regret-it !

What engine is in your quattro?

Hi there, I'm trying to find out if my a4 quattro 2.6 b5 abc engine can be remapped - I read somewhere that I may have difficulty in finding remapping software for my engine.
Regards.......

Phoned angel tuning today in scotland, he says it may be able to be mapped depending on what system is on it, Taking the car over tomorrow for them to plug it in and find out.

What engine is in your quattro?
Transplanted standard AKE 180Bhp in the quattro... and fettled AFB (with a 3L block ) in the a6. Both go like stink but the quattro puts the power on the floor nicely ! The a6 spins the 19" wheels in ANY gear even with the traction control on.

Hi Greg, I had a remap done on my 99 2.5 quattro (150bhp) at one of the tuning days on the forum, I have to say i seriously regretted it and i wasnt the only guy that attended that day with a 2.5 diesel and did so.
They had to remove the chips and then applied a map that gave me power away up the power range where it was no use and i know of another guy who blew lumps out of his intercooler the week after the event.
I eventually went with a digital tuning box, which has given me all of the torque that i was looking for
I think you are doing the right thing by going to get a bespoke map, Angel have a good rep, dont worry about peak BHP figures on this engine, it is all about the extra torque . The tuning box "only" gave me and extra 30bhp, but the difference in driveability is just incredible.
Let us know how you go

Hi
Went to a group tuning day run by someone on this forum with my 1997 a4 1.8t,sent two emails and made three phone calls to confirm they could remap a car of this age, they told me no problem just turn up and we can do it,after hanging about for three hours and driving 75 miles both ways they decided that they could not do it,but one of there mobile guys could do it,had it done the next day,car drove ok for less than an hour,on plugging vag com in to my car, came up with internal memory fault in ecu, phoned the guy who came and supposedly put another map on it,which made it run ok again, but i am convinced all he did was put the original chip back in it as it does not go any different to what it did before,my advice would be to leave the car as it is,all i did was pay to have nothing done to my car,and be glad the incorrect software did not destroy my engine or turbocharger.

I took the car yesterday to angel tuning to find out if it could be done but there wasnt enuf room around the obd socket to plug in the computer, need to go back again now after cutting away the plastic around it. F**k!!
The guy quoted me £250 for a remap which sounds pretty good. I'm not going to bother with the chipping idea as it sounds a bit dodgy.

Hi Greg,
From the age of the motor (same as mine pretty much) i am guessing the port is in the rear ash tray. I reckon that when they check the motor that it will not be able to get tuned by merely flashing the ECU. It will be an ECU out and new chips being soldered in.
It appears that it is basically the B6 platform before the ECU's can just be flashed. Whether it is flashed or new chips are put in it is basically the same job as the chips will have to have a program written to them for your motor.
The £250 sounds like a decent deal when i was looking a year ago i am sure i was quoted the best part of £400 from them. Don't be to surprised if their is a bit more work and make sure they dont try and bump you for another wedge for removing the ECU once they have the car in bits, try and get them to quote you a price for new chips as well.

The guy at angel says he doesnt chip ecu's anymore as its too much hassel. Eveywhere is too expensive so if it cant get done at angel i'm not going to bother for now.

Hi Greg, I know what you mean about the price, if i remember rightly superchips were over 500 for the job.
If for any reason it does not work out, consider a digital tuning box. that is the route i went down after my rechip was done badly.
I ended up buying a good quality one (2nd hand from ebay) would be about 400 new but because there are not many 2.5s around no one bid and i got it for about 20 quid. Best money i ever spent.
I also came across ebay (Germany) where a lot of people sell the Stenbauer boxes which are meant to be amazing. you can pick these up for circa 50 quid (If your German is non existent) use the babelfish site which will do all the translations for you.
Cheers

Not that I've got a diesel but do have a chipped B5, 1999 MY, S4 quattro. As above, this has the OBD port in the rear ashtray and while a connection to the port was no problem, the ECU couldn't be flashed from there. I needed a new chip in the ECU but it wasn't a difficult job.
ECU didn't need to come out, no soldering or un-soldering required, just exchange the 1st chip for the new one, bolt the ECU lid back on and job done. Over-the-top charges aren't justified.
I went for Optican as they're the German original supplier to many of these UK companies, and they're TUV-approved for the German market ,so you can't go wrong. I've had theirs on several motors. Much more aggressive remap than, say, Superchips, too.
Doubtless they have a chip for your diesel. Hope it works out for you.
Cheers

Ron,
How does this digital tuning box work? Where does it plug in?
Have you got any links for it? Not sure what to google to look it up.
Thx, Rich
