Just bought the new mk6 GT that you are supposed to be able to plug in ipod into MDI (media device interface), website seems to indicate USB cable and ipod cable. I only have a usb cable and the standard cable that comes with ipods with usb connector for ciomputer doesnt work.

Ditto, me too. I got mine yesterday and eagerly updated my Sony NW-A3000 with some new tunes only for the RCD310 to indicate that there are no audio files present???

Anyone else had a similar problem?

I ended buying a 16GB USB stick for £15.99 and it works just fine. :arms:

Does the RCD310 show track info for the usb/ipod device?

Yes it does, you can also browse all folders and sub folders at the same time without interrupting play. I must say that i'm very impressed with the features of this stereo considering it's a standard stereo and the sound is excellent.

Hi i am in the same boat but have found out that you need a cable part no. 000 051 446 c.
The usb cable that i got with my car was only good for a usb stick! You should get the cable for free with the car but seems most of us did not.
Good luck!
I am in Portugal and have as much chance on getting one out of him as winning the lotto!
Seems that the parts department dont even know what this part is!!!

I have just ordered a new Golf GTi and am awaiting delivery, but I've heard that my iPod classic (bought 2008) may not be compatible with the interface in the new Golf. I'm not sure, but I think my iPod is version 7, though there is nothing on the iPod to confirm this. Anyone know about this? If not compatible, what should I do? Should my dealer be sorting the problem, if there is one? What could the dealer be doing? The iPod audio capability was an important part in my deciding to upgrade to this car from my 1.9 Polo, and the dealer gave no hint that there might be a problem.

In fairness Apple keep moving the goals posts on the various Ipods, so guaranteeing compatibility is a big headache.

I'm waiting for my new Golf, and was interested by people's problems getting iPODs to work. I don't think it is the iPOD, but rather the way the interface works.

Having poked about, it seems you need a separate cable (available from VW dealers and listed on the price list as a dealer option) to use an iPOD. The cable supplied only works with USB 'flash drives' or similar - simply plugging a normal iPOD cable into the USB won't work.

Has anyone got an ipod working using the special cable?

The IPOD cable comes as a dealer provided optional extra which costs just under £20. This cable replaces the arm rest USB cable which comes with the car (MK 6 Golf).

Collected my IPOD lead today from my dealer. Apparently it should have come with the car (in addition to the USB lead). IPOD (Touch) now works correctly.

Yeah having the same dock connector for years makes compatibility a nightmare. The only problem people are likely to encounter is having a charger that is using the firewire pins for charging as that doesn't work on newer iPod's and the iPhone.

Hi
I now have the ipod cable and it works with my ipod touch and charges it.
You can search all playlist without stopping the music, that side of it is great, the only problem i am having is the sound quality is not so great! maybe my downloaded tracks but seems fine on laptop and ipod when playing through other systems, i will try putting a original CD on the ipod then check the sound quality.

Anybody else had the same problem?

Mine works fine - both with an iPod but also a Creative Zen (using the USB cable). Sound quality is good - there are various options for the volume level of inputs under the menu - have you tried that? Otherwise I suppose it could be a loose connection.

Out of interest, how many kbps are you ripping your CDs at? I wouldn't consider anything less than 320kbps for car use otherwise you will notice a considerable drop in sound quality.

After my dealer said that I had to pay for an iPod cable I queried this with VW customer services via vw.co.uk.
They confirmed that if your Golf Mk6 comes with an MDI it should also come with an iPod cable.
They gave me a VW Bulletin number which I quoted to my dealer. They apologised and sent me a cable in the post. Works great!
I'll post the Bulletin number tomorrow in case it helps anyone else (its on my pc at work atm).

Hi There.
I've just got my new car and found that when I connect the ipod to the MEDIA IN socket it displays "Device not supported".
The car was supplied with media cable and it seemed all I had to do was use my ipod cable and connect the USb end into the media connection . . .I was wrong.
The ipod is classic 80G.
Please . . . . Is there anyone with any ideas for me?

Thanks Tim

Tim,

The car should have come with two cables:

- one has a USB connection. This is for non-Apple devices. If you plug your iPod into this using your iPod cable, it won't work;
- the second cable has a iPod connector. Maybe your dealer didn't supply one - I think some people on this forum didn't get one. I'd give your dealer a call as I imagine this happens quite a lot.

Svlad. Thanks

I'm finding it hard to use this site. How you post messages so you guys can see this.

The car had just one cable supplied under the arm rest which went into the "media in". I thought you just needed to use your ipod cable and you could crack on.

Thanks for getting back to me.

So is it just a case of ringing up the dealership? Bet they want paying for it also after spending £20,000 ha ha ha

Tim,

As i said, I think you're not going to be the only person that only received the ipod cable - they have been a few others on this forum - so the dealer shoudln't be surprised.

I even went back for the bottle opener for mine - which was missing - I thought if I've paid around £17k (for an SE), I might as well get the full package...

Since my last post i've had another go with connecting the ipod in my new golf and stopped when I realised something . . . . When putting the ipod under the arm rest it seems to me that there are too many cables involved in the whole matter. I can bearly close the arm rest after trying to stuff the cables in the pocket provided. I'm convinced that there is another cable that works.

I contacted a VW dealership and they say that there is only ONE cable supplied and should work any MP3.

This has got to be lies.

Hi all,

I'm a not Golf MK6 owner. Just picked up an 09 plate 2.0 TDI yesterday.

I have already tried to get my iPod working through the Media cable in the arm rest, however the stereo does not recognise it.

I have read through this thread and it seems I will need to get another cable from the dealership. Is this something they will expect me to pay for, or should I have received this when purchasing the car, bearing in mind the car is 2nd hand (1 year old)?

Thanks
GA

Hi GA,

it is the MDI, rather than Aux socket you have? In my tiguan there is an Aux socket inside the armrest

If it is an MDI did it come with a short black cable or not. If it was with a cable was it one that went into the bottom of the ipod rather than into the headphone (or a usb cable). If its the correct cable it should charge the ipod.

Other things to look at would be that your ipod is compatible and you are running the most up to date firmware in your ipod.

To be honest, if in doubt you should take it back to the dealer to sort for you.

Hi GA.

I got my TDi in 2009. Once I plugged my ipod into the cable supplied in the armrest of my car I thought I was up and running only for the the display to show " Not recognised"
This is how it goes. The cable you and I were supplied is for an MP3 player (i think) and the correct cable is with the delearship.
I contacted the dealership and they sent me the correct cable free of charge.
Ive had a few beers tonight but I'm sure i was also told that both cables should be supplied.

Regards

Tim

Ahhhh. The radio dilema. With you on that. Is there not a unit out there with this level of iPod control and a SD slot you could leave a "backup" in?
