View Full Version : How long did you wait for your Golf?

Bit a background to this thread. We ordered a mk V Golf Estate 2.0 diesel in early April and at the time we were told it would be delivered in October. Which I thought was an unusually long time to wait.
Part of the delay was the chromed roof bars we had specced. We were told there was problems sourcing them. Then we received a letter about six weeks later saying chromed roof bars are no longer available and we would get a refund for the difference in price.
Now we've had a letter and a phone saying we'll get the car sometime in November or December!

I popped into my local SEAT garage the other day and asked about an Altea FR. I specified a few extras as we did with the Golf and the salesman was able to tell me there and then that it would be built week 44 and delivered first week in December.

Why can't a VW dealer do likewise? I am really tempted to cancel the order for the car now and maybe hold on for a mk VI instead.

Is this an unusual length of time to wait for a Golf or is the upsurge in Jetta TDi sales in the US pushing us down the build list?

Sounds like they didn't commit the car to be built until the roofbar issue was sorted. Either that or the build slot it had was missed due to the on going sourcing problems.

Have you been to see your dealer? I would be demanding some kind of discount after waiting over 6 months for a Golf estate!

I'm going to pop through to the dealer next week but I wanted to have more info about other people experiences. My other half really likes the car and doesn't really want to cancel the order.

I know delivery times on certain cars can be lengthened (my sister in law works in a VW dealer), but that is normally on cars like the Scirocco, Eos and Tourag kind of cars.

She hasn't mentioned build problems with the Golf Estate.

My parents bought a new Golf GTi back in 2002 and they had them in stock. I can't believe they haven't got Golf estates in stock somewhere especially now the roofbar issue has gone or have you got other extras on it?

We added daul zone climate control, heated seats and bi-xenon lights plus I hassled the dealer for the warning triangle and first aid kit.

The quote I had from the SEAT dealer included the heated seats and bi-xenon lights as well.

No way I would buy a car with out HID lights these days.

I placed my order for a Golf Estate Sportline 2.0 TDI (with dual zone climate, blue graphite paint and removable tow ball) last May 2008 and was eventually given a build date of Wk 49. Understand delay may be due to availability of 2.0 TDI Common Rail engine, now being fitted instead of PD, in my instance.

My Drives: Austin 10; Ford Anglia 100E; Austin Healey Sprite MkI; Morris 1100; Ford Cortina MkII; Austin Maxi 1750; Ford Cortina Mk IV; Ford Escort GT MkII; Golf 1.8 MkII; Golf GTi 1.8 MkII; Golf GTi 2.0 MkIII; Golf GTi 1.8 MkIV; Mercedes C180K SE; Golf 2.0 GT TDI.

Bought 3 cars in the last 18 months, all with extras on the spec list, all came within 12 weeks.

Not sure where the Golf estate is made but VW did have a big problem with already manufactured cars due to a freak hailstorm in May this year when they were outside awaiting shipping. Stones like cricket balls damaged paintwork, broke glass and bent panels. Something like 3000 cars were affected and the replacement problem put deliveries for all models from that plant backwards. It certainly affected Passats and my dealer told me that they alone had had 7 cars of various models rescheduled for later deliveries. Maybe this has been a factor?

I understand that the Golf Estate is manufactured in South America.

Stumbled across this on the good old world wide web from June '08

"Up to 30,000 brand-new Volkswagen cars were damaged last Sunday when a brief but vicious storm with hail the size of pingpong balls hit a lot filled with new cars at a plant in Emden, on the North Sea coast in Germnay. The parked cars were waiting to be shipped to dealerships overseas as Emden is one of Europe's three main vehicle-transportation ports. VW company spokesman Christoph Adomat told the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the vehicles parked outside suffered chipped paint and/or dings, but luckily no windshields were broken. Although VW will definitely get paid by insurance, it remains unclear whether the damaged cars will be repaired and if not, what will happen to them."

Update from the dealer. They were told our car was to be built week 36. Then not long afterwards they were told that the build week was week 25! Which was in May. As of two weeks ago they still had no idea when the car is due to be built.

Interestingly back in August the dealer had been told any new orders for Golf Estates would not be fulfilled this year. Then a couple of weeks later they were then told any new orders WOULD be delivered this year.

I should hear back this week about getting a courtesy car at the start of October so I can sell the old Audi then wait for our Golf to arrive.

Has it been confirmed that the Golf Estate is now being fitted with the CR diesel engine? I did enquire about that when ordering knowing that the PD engines were being phased out.

Looking at when your car is due to be built it seems unlikely you'll get it this year. Apparently it takes at least 6 weeks to go from Mexico to Germany for the final checks etc then shipped to the UK. Can't imagine the dealers will be rushing to help folks around Christmas / New Year.

When were you given the build date for your car? As I said in my previous post I still don't have that info.

Spoke to the dealer again this morning, they still have no idea when the car is scheduled to be built. Courtesy car will be ready for us at the end of this month though.

I haven't had much dealings with VW since I had my old Mk 2 Golf GL. Their attitude wasn't great then and it looks like things aren't really improving.

Wanted a Golf Estate Sportline 2.0 TDI (with dual zone climate, Platinum Grey, parking sensors, radio upgrade), before UK launch, enquired at launch, no Sportline in UK launch stock, quoted 24 weeks delivery!
Gave the dealer some options, ended up with everything, except radio upgrade, but got Panoramic Sunroof instead, (very nice, during our brief summer),:approve: 12 week delivery, and that was a dealer order, already in build schedule. Made in Puebla, Mexico, 24th September 2007, boat to Emden, then UK, Delivered 8th November 2007!
Wouldn't be without it now, brilliant drive, nice PD engine, only a couple of minor problems i) rain water, collecting at bottom of tailgate window, and depositing itself, in the boot, when tailgate opened! Local dealer unable to help, say no response from Wolfsburg! Any ideas to resolve it? ii) Mirror down function reversing, very intermittant.

I popped in to the dealer again today and they still have no idea when the car is to be built let alone when we'll receive it.
If they don't give us a satisfactory update by the weekend it's getting cancelled. Maybe try a Superb or MkV GTi instead.

Dealer now tells us our car will be built week 44 or 45. At very best we'll have it late December but realistically January.
Went to look at used GTi's and A4's today but only one had xenon lights.

Well the mk V estate saga trundles on. We're getting a 'relief' car from the dealer tomorrow evening. This is to tide us over until our car arrives. I'm not holding my breath.
They have offered us a GT TDi to run about in. Be interesting to see if it's a PD or CR engined model. I'm kinda hoping it's a PD model so I can make an accurate comparison to the CR engine our estate will have.

Anyway I have a buyer lined up for the old A6. I'll miss that good old bus. It's been a faithful old thing and definitely the best value for money I've ever gotten from a car.

my dealer mentioned today he had a customer whose golf estate had slipped 8 weeks and he was not sure why, we ordered a gti pirelli end of july and that has been in the country a couple of weeks (and seen in the flesh before i went on holiday) and gets picked up on saturday, this was originally going to be the dealer demo and we then tweaked the spec, he is cursing not ordering another one, unfortunately the scirocco ordered on the same day is four weeks away.

What's taken the dealer so long to prepare your car? You saw it two weeks before you can collect it?

Interesting to hear about another estate customer having the same kind of delays we are experiencing.

Getting the GT TDi is making the wait a bit easier though.

I was looking at the Golf Estate (2.0 CR SE, Panorama) and was told 14-16 weeks delivery from order. I was also told it would be the CR engine not the EUI.

In early April I ordered a Glof Bluemotion on a 6-8 week promised build which was not delivered until mid August. At the time I was told that any estate model would be 6 months away.

Update on Golf Estate Sportline 2.0 TDI, ordered in May 2008.
Dealer contacted me today to say vehicle is in build. Estimated delivery Jan/Feb 2009, so should reap the benefit of the 2.5% drop in VAT!

Update time - our estate was built last week of October and is now en route to Germany. Hopefully have it in December.
Just need to order some black indicator lenses for the wing mirrors and get some quotes for spraying the grille etc to hide the bling.
Seriously considering a Zenec OEM look head unit as well. Might wait till the new version of that launches Q1 next year though.

Just leaving to pick up the estate! I've managed to get a private plate for the good lady without her knowing can't wait to see her face when we get to the dealer.
I did see the car yesterday and it hadn't been debadged as I requested. I hope removing the badges won't leave any marks.

Initial impressions of the car are very good. The dash seems a better fit than the GT we had and the 310 version of the stereo is a fair bit better sounding than the old 300.
Biggest difference I've noticed is that the CR engine seems a lot more refined than the PD engined GT we had. The CR version is quieter, smoother and less raucous when you extend the revs.
The debaged rear looks so much better as well. Even the salesman was well impressed with that.
