Went out today and bought a 4GB creative MP4. €99.99, half price in PC World. Plus a free mains charger. One of these.

SWMBO has one of those, not the same model, but is a sturdy little thing, a lot more reliable than my rather more expensive Ipod!

I too didn't like iPods. I also just didn't want to be another sheep in the long line to the front door of Apple.
I even tested a friends and really couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
But, if you've ever used iTunes then you'll see why iPods are excellent.
Sure they look a bit bland compared to a Sony, are more expensive than a creative.
But 3 or 4 years on, my Original Nano is perfect, battery life is excellent and it has never missed a beat.
So, don't write them off, as a device and an application to get songs on a device, there's nowt better IMO.
Like all MP3 players, change the headphones as soon as you buy one. As stock headphones are all pants.
I have some sennheiser's and they are excellent.

Hi guys...first post here...
Just find a player that you are comfortable using...IPod user interface is quite simple to use, my Creative ZEN Vision M is even better (for me).
Actually, there are a few wee extra functions that sold me the Creative one...the ability to view videos (you usually have to encode it) use it as a hard drive, a USB Host, a recording device, a radio...the list goes on...
The sound quality in my professional opinon, is pretty damn good, but if you like to listen to long mixes, be prepared for small glitches when track changes happen...but it's not that annoying once you are used to it.
Take Care!
AJ.

Oh...and take the advice of prolfe...get decent headphones. Beware tho...try a few pairs out to see what works for you. As I'm an Audio Engineer, I am used to Ultimate Ears headphones, and their sound.
I would recommend 'em!

Out of the Ipod and the creative the creative wins hands down imo
Everything the ipod is without the need for crappy itunes software
however if you wanna be able to use it in the car i'd go ipod as most decent headunits have full ipod connectivity rather than just an aux in for the sound.

iPods are the way forward! :D

I must admit that with my ancient DeltaCC radio & annoying multichanger that wont play non-original CD's, i have been using an old 3GB standalone cassette MP3 player.
The sound is actually not that bad, and is superior to the FM transmitters i have tried.

Im all for better sound quality and all that, but does anyone else find them 'plunger' type earphones (like on sonys) really hard to keep in your ear??

Mine go right into the ear and have never popped out.
It came with 3 different sizes from Tea-Cup size ears through to FA Cup size.
