reading a magazine today (practical caravan) came upon something that i didn't know about,if you have had a photo licence for ten years you must update the photo on the licence. If you go to this link and scroll down to new photocard driving licence it tells you all about it, what it doesn't tell you is the fine that you can incur if caught driving with a outdated photo on your licence up to £1000!!!! it costs £17.50 to renew the first date that this comes into effect is this june so check the expiry date on your licence its on the front at 4b www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_10012514 -
Changing your photo on the photocard driving licence
Your photocard driving licence is valid for a maximum of 10 years, to ensure that your photograph is kept up to date with your true likeness. The DVLA will issue you with a reminder when your photocard driving licence is due for renewal.
However, if during a 10 year period you want to change your photograph you must complete the application form D1 that is available from the DVLA form ordering service and Post Office® branches. Your new photograph that will be put on your licence must be a:
colour passport size (size of image 45mm x 35mm) ( black and white photographs and those not in the above format will not be accepted)
a true likeness, showing the full face (head and shoulders), with no hat, helmet or sunglasses
signed on the back by the person who has completed section seven of the D1 application

I noticed this when i updated my address on mine at the end of last year... sent the card off and they issued the new card with only 18 months left on it...
After reading the small print after i got mine back.. they was no request for cash when changing address, but you could also send a new photo at the same time if you wanted..
I would of thought it should be free to update the photo as you are for-filling there request..

It is just another way of helping them to nail you for doing 33 in a 30. What would they do if we all rebelled?

How will an updated photograph on your driving licence make you more likely to be caught speeding?

Not more likely to get caught, just easier to ID the driver. Anyway, didn't you taste the bitterness?:aargh4:

There's more chance of winning the lottery without buying a ticket than to get people of this country to stick together, I thought you of all would have known that.;)

If your photo is outdated your licence will be expired, and should you be stopped by police your licence will be shown as an expired substantive licence. (Substantive=full as opposed to provisional). In plain English you will have no licence and will be dealt with accordingly. At present that means you can have your car impounded and a minimum of 3 points on your new licence when you do get the photo updated.
I have no problem updating my photo, as in this day and age it could help prevent identity theft but it does seem like a money making scheme to charge for it

The vast bulk of things HMG do relating to drivers/driving is a money making scheme!

I will soon have to surrender my 25 year completely clean and unblemished driving licence to have myself branded as an irresponsible “speed freak” who regularly mows down children and OAP’s, or am I just a mid forties business man trying to earn an honest living (rare in the motor trade!) and paying exorbitant amounts of tax. Why is it that every time I get up in the morning it feels like I am dropping my pants and being taken from behind by Her Riches Führer Brown and his crony “hello Darling”? I am beginning to understand why some people have taken up arms against their leaders in other countries.

Sorry if I'm missing something but where does it say you have to pay to update the photo? On this page it says it's free: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_4022089

I think we only have to actually pay for renewing the licence when it expires every 10 years..not actually pay for the renewal of the photo.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think your actual license expires every 10 years, only the photo (and therefore the photocard). You are required to renew your photo every 10 years,
As far as I know, your actual license expires when you're 70, and you need to renew then following a medical. That's free.
You pay to renew only following bans or if you've had your license revoked.
Therefore, unless you had your license revoked or disqualified, the only thing you should really have to pay for renewal of your license is the cost of a photo, stamp and envelope every ten years!
Could be wrong.

Well..the photocard licence expires every 10 years. If you look at 4b on the photocard - that is the 'valid to' date. The actual licence doesnt expire until your 70, only the card. Its almost like a credit/debit card - you get a new one every couple of years even though your one works perfectly well...
typical money making sheme..bloody dvla

Don't mean to cause a ruckus, but I have licenses in two other countries and have to pay for license renewal on both. I thought that we didn't have to pay for license renewal in the UK, which I thought was incredible, as I'd have expected it anywhere else - I'd like to put this really carefully, but I'm wondering whether the only reason why there is complaining is because this has not been enforced before. Is this something new?
I'm still inclined to believe that there is no charge to renew if there is no revocation or disqualification. According to this page (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/DG_068315) 4a and 4b have nothing to do with the license, they have to do with the photograph, and surely the dates only carry significance to the validity of the photograph, in other words on date 4b you have to renew your photo (and therefore get a new photocard), and according to this page (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_4022089_), it's free to renew your photograph. I don't mean to be a pain but I'm pretty sure about this!
