I have a TDI and before i bought a rear spoiler for it i was wondering what the fitting requirements where for it. whether it needed to be bolted in or adhesive?
If it is adhesive will it be strong enough to withstand the winds?

Yeah they are bonded on... I put one on my old 4Motion and it never budged.
I am going to put one on my GTi when the nicer weather comes...

How hard are they to fit?
How much could i pick a silver one up for? (golt gt tdi 130)

They are easy to fit. Line it up and stick it on!
The genuine VW spoilers are around £100 plus you would have to get it painted and buy the bonding agent to stick it on with You will be hard pressed to find one painted in the colour you want!
By the way there was two silver paints applied to the Mk4 Golf. The earlier models were Satin Silver, and the later models (I think 2000 onwards roughly) were Reflex Silver... Yours being a TDi 130 would be Reflex Silver.

Doesnt sound too expensive.
This bonding agent, is it a glue thats specifically designed for sticking spoliers on? Imean, there will be a fair bit of wind resistence so I dont want it falling off at 70mph on the motorway!

The RS4 and RS6 spoilers are fitted the same way and they go a lot faster than our Golfs do!! :biglaugh:

If I were to stick a spoiler on, I'd use TigerSeal - kind of black silicone that sticks like sh*t to a blanket. Used it on the glovebox lid on my golf after it came apart, bodyshops often use it to fix spoilers and side skirts....really good stuff

That was the stuff I used. Couldn't think of the name!!

Hi !
I purchased my 1.6 16v in september and one of the first things i did was to get a spoiler from VW @ £100
Took it to Agnews Bodyshop and got it painted and fitted for £105, which isn't really a lot of money.
I would tend to get people who have a proven track record in fitting this sort of kit. Wouldn't dream of trying it myself as I usually mess things up.
When you buy the kit it comes with two screws, not sure if the sticky stuff comes with it, but in my case, I got it bonded to the car and never worried about the screws.
Good luck, hope it works out,
Mark.

Hi Mark - could you possibly post a pic of your car with the spoiler on - just want to get an idea of what the genuine spoilers look like.
Thanks in advance,
Matt.

Guys, this was my spoiler on my original Mk4. I think it was a demo when the Mk4 GTi was first launched.

Thanks Dub, I assume then that the spoiler would have been a factory fit - ie VW original part?

Yeah it was genuine VW equipment. The part no was 1J0 071 640 A and they are £99.95. I bought one for my 4Mo when I had it and will be buying another for my current GTi. Some people prefer the Anniversary / R32 spoiler as it doesn't have the cut out for the aerial, but I prefer the one I had as it was slightly wider.

Thanks again Dub.
Have just been into the main ******** - they quoted £114 inc vat for the GTI spoiler. Apparently the computer doesn't list the R32 spoiler as being compatible for our car . Anyway, having seen the picture of yours, we'll seriously consider the GTI one. I'll take the part number you gave with me next time I go.
Slightly off topic, but... great looking motor you had there - a real credit to you. I have had a couple of red volvo's (one of which was a T5). They looked beautiful once mopped and waxed etc, but it certainly took alot of hard work to get them there and keep them looking good.

Always had a soft spot for the T5. I was in the Police for a bit and we had a T5 traffic car. It was well built considering what it was put through!!
Some people don't like Red, but I liked my first GTi so much in Red that I got another this time!
Getting back to the spoiler, the price I quoted was from a 2003 brochure so I am not surprised it has gone up a bit. Also be prepared for the part number to be out of date but try it anyway!

When i got my spoiler from VW i just asked for the Golf MK4 spoiler with V-cut in it and i got the one that your after. It appears that these are the standard ones but if you want one that the R32 (MK4) uses then ask for the one without the V-cut :). I also got VW to prime and spray mine to match the colour of my car specifically as there where different varients of silver for my car in the year my car was produced. Hope this helps.

The VW part number is quoted in post 15 mate. VW still sell them as I bought one last year for my current Mk4 GTi.
Part Number is 1J0 071 640 AK, complete with fitting kit. You just need to get in painted ;)

I dont want it falling off at 70mph on the motorway!
This happened to me! my spoiler was stuck on with some ****** bonding and it smashed to bits on the M65 :zx11:
I used self tapping screws aswell as adhesive when i fitted my next one myself....its lasted over2years

If your VW dealer has a bodyshop then they could arrange getting it painted. Depending on the age of your car it could be Satin Silver or Reflex Silver.
Don't worry about it falling of. The fitting kit comprises of screw and templates showing where to drill the holes. I also used a strong bonding agent aswell so it won't ever budge!

How much did it cost for VW to do the work (if you remember?!?)
Think I will opt for the R32 type!!

I paid £70 to get mine preped and sprayed but that is with non metalic paint and through the Vauxhall dealer my brother worked at at the time. The proper price would of been nearer £175 I reckon plus the cost of the spoiler.
The R32 spoiler (which is the same as the Anniversary) are a lot more expensive. I think they are nearer £200 plus spray and fit.
I would say all in you would be looking at £300 for the normal GTi spoiler and nearer £400 for the R32 one....
