Hi All,
I am planning to purchase a new 1.5 (150ps) petrol manual MK8. I am aware that there is a chip shortage and car factories have limited output.
The accessories I am looking for - metallic paint (Atlantic Blue), side/curtain airbags, space saving wheel, rear view camera, rubber mats. comes to around 26.5k.
When you go to order a car from a main dealer - what documentation will they need - any ID?. What should I request - a detailed list of the specifications in case it changes in production?
Do they give touch up paint with new cars?
I have been asked for a security deposit of £500. Also any tips on ensuring I get what I pay for and am protected via relevant legislation? Any way that I can get a factory order sooner than later?
I am also thinking about seat covers - ideally something quite hardwearing? any suggestions? what else would help me protect the car like new :)
All the best...

You will probably need your driving licence and if you are PX anonther car then worth taking the V5 with you to show you are the registered keeper. Regarding the change in specification you are somewhat in the lap of the gods there. The sales contract will say that the car specification is subject to change. In many cases if they upgrade the spec between order and manufacturing you will get the better spec for no cost. If there is anything in the spec that were it not to be there is a real deal breaker then discuss it with the dealer before signing. £500 depooit is quite low, I have usually been asked for £1000.
No they do ot usually give touch up paint with the car, you can of course ask and they may throw it in
There are two things that control your place in the factory order queue. One is the dealer's allocation. If they have not sold all their slots then you may get it quicker than habving to wait for the new allocation to be released. The other is for the dealer to amend an exisitng order to include the spec you want. Remember that the space saver wheel and rubber mats can be bought post delievery or added by the dealer themselves so do not hold out on those. It is also worth getting the dealer to look at what inventory is available. there may be a car close to the sepc you want available sooner. You may need to compromise on some of the options but it could mean a quicker delivery.

Thanks. I am going to place the order at the weekend. The total price comes to nearly 26k. I am looking to pay cash. Do you have any tips with negotiating - the car will come out for the new 22 plate in March? The "accessories" above the base Life list price come to about 1.5k and I suppose these have some higher margin. Would it be fair to ask for £1,000 off and meet in the middle or to ask for a specific item for free? What do you suggest. I dont want to straightaway reveal that I am paying cash. Maybe negotiate the price first?

Not paid cash for a car for sometime so can't really advise. You may actually get a better deal buying it on a PCP. With VW Finance you can settle the PCP anytime after you take delivery (some have even been known to do it in the 14 day cooling off period) and you still keep all the benefits such as the VW contribution, currently £1250. Also by being on the finance deal you can save on servicing by buying the service plan for £269 which gives you the first two services (you need to be on the fixed service schedule). Don't mention to the dealer that you plane to settle early as they will not like you to do that as they will lose any extra bonus for selling the car on a finance deal if you sell it too quickly.
With cars in short supply at the moment I suspect as a cash buyer you could struggle to get £1250 off the list price as a discount. Margins for new car sales for dealers are very thin, they make they money on selling things like Gap Insurance, and bodywork insurance plus used cars and servicing.

I magically was able to get a few hundred pounds off! Even on a cash purchase! Do you have any advice on GAP insurance by VW? Has anyone ever claimed on such insurance? Did they pay out. One of my concerns with back to invoice is that I got a dealer discount and the effect of inflation in 2 or 3 years time. Is it worth negotiating - e.g. using a quote from ALA?
Second question. I am looking to clean my car exterior. I dont have a driveway. I am thinking of taking it to a jet wash and then using AutoGlym products and 2 buckets and microfiber cloths..any tips? Is the set of interior bodywork and wheels for 60 pounds from amazon. Is it worth it? I am wondering where to buy 2 buckets with grit guards??

You will always getting a better deal on Gap by not buying from the dealer. I have usually paid under 50% of the "best we can possibly do" price quoted by the dealer by going with a third party. Dealers see things like GAP and bodywork protection as the way to maximise the profit on the sale and the sales guys are heavily incentivised to sell it.

Same here. This is my last one. Deeply disappointed with the software and electronics, very worrying if we’re all going fully electric in a few years. Bye bye VW…

Thanks guys - I am still awaiting my new Golf 8. Do you have any advice relating to getting value for money insurance? I currently use directline on another vehicle where I am a second driver. Will they transfer the no-claims discount?
I am also looking for tips to maintain the car in the best condition and make it last a long time? I know of many Golfs exceeding 100k miles.
In terms of the servicing plan - are there things I can do to DIY maintain - like topping up the oil? I gather the servicing plan doesn't include tyres? is it worth getting them done elsewhere?
johnsimcox

If you stick with DirectLinethey may take your driving record as second driver on another DL policy and give you some NCD credit. I know Admiral do this. Regarding looking after, keep it clean and give it a good body protection regime look on a detailing website abut the best products to use. You can top up the oil if the car tells you it needs additional oil, but you may find it does not need any between services. You are right the service plan does not inlude tyres, or things like brake fluid changes at 3 years. For tyres, you may find the dealer is price competitive otherwise go elsewhere.

Than you very much. One more thing - I ordered around 7 weeks ago - a 1.5 life, nothing special really. The dealer was very reluctant to take the order in the first place. A few dealers even point blank refused on the phone when I said a new golf. Is this due to the chip shortage? When you buy other things e.g. houses or even financial products, companies are "dying" to take your custom. Why is this not the case with a circa 25K product? Do the salespeople get any commission per vehicle?
Also my dealer is not giving me any updates so far. The only thing I know is the expected handover is at the End of March. I ideally need it as soon as possible as another car is "on its last legs". I dont want to cancel as I wont get the airbags on stock vehicles. Is it worth asking vw direct? or just be patient?

Almost certainly down to the chip shortage and dealers having already already sold all their current allocation of build slots for the next period. The new car market is currently very supply constrained, hence the value of second hand cars is high and in some cases higher than the list price of the same car new. Salespeople are paid commission but even that is dictated by the customer satisfaction rating given by the customer (5* rating or no commission). Very unlikely that you will get any success speaking to VW directly as you are the dealers customer not theirs. You will just have to hope that the build date gets pulled forward

Supply is a massive problem, as are lead times. But its not just vw, its all over.

I ordered 4 weeks ago, and the dealer was happy to take the order, and in fact I received an order number a couple of hour after, but even though my order has gone in it has not yet been accepted by VW. So that means I do not have any visibility to a build week or possibly handover. I was told, and on the paperwork, it says end of May for delivery, but I'm expecting it to be much later than that, thankfully I'm not in a rush so can afford to wait.
If you are just ordering a standard car, I would phone around and ask dealers what they have coming in over the next couple of months, some stock order cars are being built and delivered to dealers.

I am still awaiting any further information for the car order. I assume things have dramatically slowed down with COVID and the Christmas break. When I receive my factory order is it worth going for a HPI or AA car check? would a dealer be opposed to this?

I have been given a build date at the end of the month. Roughly when might this car arrive at the dealer?
I am also thinking ahead to things for the collection day:
Checklist: Everything you need to do when you buy a car | Driving Seat (jardinemotors.co.uk) (https://news.jardinemotors.co.uk/buying-tips/checklist-everything-you-need-to-do-when-you-buy-a-car)
The ultimate car collection checklist before driving your new car from the showroom (jthughes.co.uk) (https://www.jthughes.co.uk/Blog/View/What-to-check-before-you-drive-your-new-car-from-the-showroom/2963)
The dealer is supposed to do the PDI, road tax and there is some complementary VW insurance (i think first 30 days). Is it worth getting my insurance before collection - i.e . once the dealer receives the vehicle and knows the registration?
On the day I will of course look around the car and also take it for a test drive before paying. I will also ask for the fuel and the oil to be topped up. Oh and also I will pay for the service plan.
I will request any car manuals/documents. I have a Golf mk4. Any new features I should ask to be demonstrated before driving off - Sat Nav, central locking etc.
I will do a bank transfer - is that how you guys paid? A faster payment could take 2hours to clear I have been told.
Any other advice. My dealer is around 1 hrs drive from me - and I am looking not to go back too often for any problems.!
Are there any known teething issues or faults which are common with new cars? Any product recalls with MK7.5s?

Usually there is anything up to a 14 day period for the car to get from the factory to the port and then a further 14 day period for the car to get from the port of arrival in the UK to the dealer, so you are looking at anything up to a month, so you can assume early March which will alo give you the registration number (22).
VW only gives you 5 days insurance for free. I use this as it tends to make it easier for the dealer to tax the car and then I get my own insurance sorted once I get home as it is not really a sensible alternative to a standard policy. All my cars have been on PCP but I would expect the delaer will almost certainly expect you to pay for the car before you collect it, so they can tax it etc, andf I doubt they will let you go for a test drive before paying. VW delivery charge only covers a half tank of fuel so you will be fortunate if you get a full tank. The il should have been checked as part of the PDI process.
The dealer should take you through all the features of the car although in these Covic times that may not be possible (wasn't when I picked up our Golf in June 2020) but in reality I oftnefind the dealers do not acytually know how many of the features work. As a minimum you should get them to make sure your phone is paired with the car and that you are logged in to MyVolkswagen both in the app and the car and set up with you as the car owner. If you are buying the service plan make sure the car is set up for fixed rather than variable service intervals, easy to check as the next oil change should be give or take a couple of days 12 months from day of collection. The plan is not applicable to cars on variable service intervals
Other than the many software issues I am not aware of any signigficant faults or recalls (I assume your recall question relates to the Mk8 not 7.5). Your car should have the latest software but be aware that going forward some software updates will requore a trip to the dealer and are not done over the air. Ypou should check the tyre pressures as dealers often set them wrong or fail to reduce them from the very high pressures they are set for transit from the factory.

To be honest I am not sure I am fan of any of those, However on my Audi A6 I did fit this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lackschutzshop-Protection-Compatible-Protector-Transparent/dp/B086GLYB1H/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Lackschutzshop&qid=1643646032&sr=8-2. The first one I fitted got damaged when something fell against the bumper. When I took it off to replace it the paintwork underneath was perfect. Would highly recommend it and much cheaper than the £55 VW wants for essentially the same item

collection/service plan questions. I believe that for a MK8 the fixed service plan will be around £295 for a minor and major service - may have gone up due to inflation. I am thinking my annual milage will be around 4-5k miles maybe in the first few years.
1) we have a trusted independent dealer - is it worth going to them instead - what use is the 3 service stamps if I will be keeping this car for a long time??
2) if consumables like tyres are needed, could I go elsewhere - or am i ripped off my VW mark up?
3) is there any room for negotiation with the service plans. Shame VW doesn't do a 3-year one do they?

Whilst the car is under warranty (3 years) if you use an independenrt they will need to show on the invoice that they have used genuine VW parts for all servicing otherwise you may find that VW voide the warranty. Also these cars are likely to be subject to numerous software updates int he coming years as VW sorts out the issues, your independent will not have access to these updates and they will almost certianly not be avaiable as "over the air" updates. I would stick with dealer. It an also be helpful if you build the relationship with hte dealer in case you need to call on some goodwill in the event of a problem outside the warranty
The Service plan only covers the defined service. Things like wiper plades, brake pads, and tyres are outside the plan and you do not need to go to the dealer for them. Thnat said on my Audi, the dealer was the cheapest for a replacement tyre when I needed one
I think the Service Plan price is fixed but there are ometime offers. On my Audi I got 25% off the price of the plan before Christmas. VW used to do three years, but now only do 2 years. Once the car is over 3 years old, VW offer fixed price servcing which is quite competitive so this would apply for the third service, if you do it a few days past the 3rd birthday or have a dealer prepared to put it through as over 3 years when it is a few days short (had that before for me)
