View Full Version : Tpi 2043172/23
Evening chaps.
ive just had my 2016 A4 3.0 tdi 272 serviced at my local independent Audi specialists.
They discovered an engine knocking noise related to tpi 2043172/23 for my car.
It’s something to do with a camshaft.
I bought the car as an approved used Audi from a main dealer so they told me to get it booked in under warranty.
Before I book it in I was wondering if anybody can shed some light on this tpi?
Googling it has not been much use.
thanks

Hi Mand,
Audi TPI (Technical Product Information).
Look here, there was a Q7 owner with tpi 2043172, His engine is a 3.0 TDI V6 tiptronic (same). hope it helps... What mileage is it? If you don't mind me asking...
Strange engine sound on the left side (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/193035-Strange-engine-sound-on-the-left-side)
Problem was (exhaust) camshaft, that does not sound good, cams normally last along time unless they run short of oil (blocked supply channel etc).
Also all timing chains and cam related gears are in the rear of the V6, so it would be motor out.
Search V6 camshafts / timing chain noise etc....
Only the oil pump drive chain is in the front, Cam chains at the rear.

Thanks for that. Mines at 36500 miles
I think there’s been 3 camshaft updates, but I’ve no idea if it is the actual camshaft that’s the problem

36500 is not alot, I'm on 30,000....
Did it just come out of the blue? or did it develop from something small and now louder.....
I'm interested because I'm not that far behind you....
and I agree get it booked in under warranty... ASAP and keep us updated... very interesting.
I had not heard anything, its very quiet from in the car.
The tpi was found by my local Audi independent that has access to Audi digital service servers.
He showed me how it sounded different to the other side. It is subtle and he said that Audi may say it is ok.
What gets me is why it wasn’t dealt with in Feb when I bought it as an approved used Audi.
Its booked in mid September as Audi are that busy.
Quick update. Audi couldn’t book me in for a month, so it’s just been checked by them.
They had it for 2 days and said they can’t hear any tapping or knocking noise, so returned it saying all’s well.
I can still hear the difference in noise from drivers side of the engine.
Although it’s not loud it is apparent when you’ve heard it once but I wouldn’t have noticed it if the first garage hadn’t pointed it out. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to be there when it was collected otherwise I would have asked to show the service guy what I hear.
Maybe that’s not the noise the TPI is about, but I sort of feel wary as it out of used warranty in March 2021.

The instructions to garage are in this thread (in Spanish, but they translate pretty well): Tensor de la cadena de distribución - Página 11 - Audi A6 / Allroad C7 (a partir de 2011) - Audisport Iberica (https://www.audisport-iberica.com/foro/topic/351895-tensor-de-la-cadena-de-distribuci%C3%B3n/page/11/). They have to send a recording to authorise payment, so will be cautious if the sound isn't obviously showing a need to do the work.
As you say though, there may be other problems that should be covered by warranty even if not the TPI.
