View Full Version : Side Assist / Exit Warning / Rear Traffic RetroFit

Hi Guys,
So I've started my next Retrofit which is to add Side Assist (Blind Spot Warning) / Exit Warning and Rear Traffic Warning to the Q. Sadly when I bought the car off the forecourt it had Park Pack (inc. Self Parking / Surround View Cameras etc) but not Park Park Advanced with the other bits.
As I had Blind Spot Monitoring on my previous car this is something I really missed. Now I've completed the TV Tuner and Night Vision RetroFits, this is next on my list and I've been slowly gathering parts etc.
What also helps is I need some of these parts to retrofit Soft Door Close (Power Door Closure) anyhow, so I'm starting with this and then it means some of that work is done up front.
I've sourced the Radar Sensors, Wiring Loom (found it on said Auction Site and it was so cheap it was worth it to save me making the wires up myself) and new Door controllers. Yup, I've had to swap my front door controllers out for new ones that support Side Assist and Soft Door Close. I just completed the Driver's door today. I have still to source new Rear door controllers and swap those over but they can be done anytime. I have also flashed the latest firmware onto the front controllers so they are bang upto date.
Here are my new Door Controllers (now installed), Radar Sensors that go in the rear bumper on the left and right hand side and wiring loom for them:
32067
32068
32069
I still need to get the LED indicators to go into the wing mirror housings + wires and of course new mirror covers to support the LED indicators. Other than that though, that is pretty much it for Side Assist and Rear Traffic Crossing (apart from Coding and Calibration of course)
For Exit Warning there are a couple of LED "bulbs" that connect to those strips in the door trim which flash red when Exit warning is activated but they are very cheap. They are sadly not the same LED's used for the Ambient lighting colours.
For those interested I'll keep you posted.
Cheers

Great work Andy..Keep us posted. Not sure if this is any help but on a side note I have the side assist and Exit warning already but do not have the Ambient Lighting option. As I already have the led strips in the door all I have to do is fit some Led rgb's and holders/modules onto the strips and wire them in. I will just wire them into 12v supply so they come on when ignition is on. I have ordered red led's but you can just replace globes with a different colour in the future...

Hey Bjc. Yep that's the ones! I need the exit warning led modules you have :)
Let us know how that goes... So you just getting 4 more exit warning led modules and swapping the globes right?
That should work perfectly and you at least get one colour!

Been a couple of weeks but getting there. Today my plan was to swap the wiring loom inside the rear bumper.
The loom connects all the rear parking sensors to the car and if you have Side Assist from the factory the loom includes the connectors for the Side Assist radar units. I bought the right loom from fleabay and was just going to remove my existing loom and replace with this one but as I started it soon occurred it was too hard to remove without removing the rear bumper.. Something I don't want to do. Also the retractable trailer hitch blocks access to behind the bumper.
So I went to plan B and instead stripped down the side assist wire loom I bought from fleabay and just took the side assist connections only. This gives me a dedicated side assist wire loom and I'll run this across the rear bumper and feed it through. I'll cable tie it to the rear parking sensor loom.
Some pics below. Hopefully will do this tomorrow.
Original Side Assist loom stripped back.

Afternoon
So finally got the radar units installed in the rear bumper today and wired into the car etc. All seen ok and working well. Thanks to the guys I took coding info from back in MK I've got all that sorted and no errors in my dash anymore.
Wing mirror covers and wing mirror led indicators have arrived at dealer (were on back order) so just got to get the new wing mirror covers wrapped to match the car (no need to paint!) and then swap them over. Should be just about there then!
Few more pics
Side Assist Radar Brackets for rear bumper

Had to loosen tailpipe "tips" and swivel them down just to get more room to clip the brackets and sensors in. You can also see the wiring loom I ran in. That is neatly attached by cable ties to the parking sensor wiring loom

Radar Sensor on left hand side fitted

Hi Andy, as always, great to read of your progress and retrofit efforts.
I would like to the add the rear traffic capability - I presently only have the parking sensors front and rear along with rear view camera.
Are you aware what additional hardware would be needed - is it just the 2 sensors for rear bumper along with the brackets, plus the loom to interface it?
Had a few near misses already whilst backing out cautiously but the sheer length of the vehicle makes it tough seeing clear of a bay until you already have the backside out by several feet.
Am I right in thinking this system warns of approaching traffic as cautionary, as well as applies safety measures (brakes) if it believes impact is likely? I'll have a search to see if I can find a video of the system in action.

Hi Spr0cket
Thanks for your comments.
Correct you could have rear traffic crossing on its own if you wish as the hardware for side assist is the same hardware for Rear traffic crossing. In addition to a wiring loom and integration into fuse box etc.
Correct, Red arrows will appear on the mmi for caution but put on the anchors if it feels danger is imment. There is quite of lot of coding to be done and that depends on what equipment you already have but it's all doable.
Here is a good video showing it.

Andy,
I will have my car with front and rear parking sensors, but not with rear view camera, also no side assist. If I install rear traffic assist, will it work? Also roughly how much did you pay for the rear assist (brackets, radars, loom)?
Thanks,

Hi Anemeth
Yes it will work, there isnt a "pre-req" for it but you will need to take passenger seat out to wire it in unless you have the overhead 360 camera system.
Cost of parts for rear traffic crossing is circa Ł400-450 GBP (parts off ebay and dealer etc)

Thanks. I hoped that the little loom which you made will work for me too, but as I do not have the overhead 360 camera, I am not prepared to take the seat out. Thus I will not do this. Good luck with the rest of the mods!

Hi Anemeth
No worries, I actually did a little more digging last night and you dont need to remove the passenger seat as you have the reversing camera.. so it is easier in that regard.
You can certainly make a loom up like I did..
PM me if you want to discuss further

So far i know is that the 8V FL does not have exit warning alerts. The A4 and A5 do have it

Hi Andy,
I am new on this forum found it digging for some info about Q7 retrofit. I am an owner of Q7 4m 3.0TDI with reinforced engine to 325HP. Couple month ago I have retrofitted my car with Side Assist set. Side Assist as well as Rear Traffic Warning work perfectly but Exit Warning doesn't work at all. I was told to change in Module 09, Byte 37, Bit 0 from 0 on 1 ( I use VCP) but it didn't help.
I already have found out that I have to install LED Modules (4M0 947 536D), some harness and do the proper coding.
And now my big and kind request to you. It seems that you can help:
1/ How should I wire it?
2/ What is the proper coding of Exit Warning assuming that Side Assist and Rear Traffic Warning is already installed and work.
3/ Is there something more to do to make it working?
I would appreciate your help
Best regards

Yup, brackets are different in respect to
One bracket part number for S-Line or SQ7 Variants
and a different bracket part number for SE or E-Tron Variants

After months of planning and parts collecting, I finally visited the great man Andy himself last weekend to do this very retrofit.. man, I was so impressed and jealous with the setup he's got there in his garage, every piece of kit needed to get the job done, both hardware and software, there is even a big TV screen next to the couch to view what he is doing from the workstation like a lot of professional garages!!! ... Andy explained everything he was doing, and was happy to involve me in the process as well because I wanted to learn.. he made sure I was happy with everything down to each wiring before putting things in..
We hit some challenges along the way due to some slightly incorrect parts being bought, totally on me.. but we got there in the end thanks to Andy's patience and knowledge! Lessons learnt, always double check with Andy on the parts before ordering, a tiny difference in parts number (a prefix or postfix) can make all the difference..
Now Side Assist and Exit Warning work perfectly on my Q which was an option I didn't realize the car is lacking until I picked the car up...and it was something I really missed from my previous car. The LEDs in the wind mirror light up when there are cars in the blind spot of the mirrors, and the red LEDs in the doors flash when I try to open a door and someone is coming close to the car on the same side... as the bonus, cross traffic alert is enabled as well… all thanks to the radar sensors we put in into the rear bumper. Very happy with everything, and big thanks again to Andy!!! I will be back for my next retrofit soon (night vision).

I believe that's the turn assist working in action haha..
Audi Q7 turn assist - Audi Technology Portal (https://www.audi-technology-portal.de/en/electrics-electronics/driver-assistant-systems/audi-q7-turn-assist)
I had it triggered a couple of times both I think were a bit over sensitive.. one time, I was steering into the central area marked with white diagonal stripes because of parked cars on the side, there was a car coming from the other side but plenty of space for both of us to pass (I am not even in its lane).. My Q jolted really hard and pre-sense triangle and loud warning... all very dramatic.. :O
The other time, I was turning right, found a gap, the coming car was quite far, I put my foot down and the car braked, kind of like I stalled it.. should have passed safely but the car thought differently... but hey, at least the system works right?
Same as inchshort, now I just leave bigger gaps, slow down more.. overall becoming a safer driver maybe lol?

Hello.
Do you know how to deactivate Rear Cross Traffik Alert (RCTA) in ABS unit?
I don`t like how RCTA works (too many fails), so I deactivated it in 3C unit (main side assist unit), system not work now, but in ABS unit I got error code (RCTA data not present in databus or something like that). I need to know which bit in ABS coding activate|deactivate RCTA.
Thank you

Hi, I'm new to this forum (however active from a number of others), found this thread from a search.
I've installed mirrors with LED, bumper radars and the connecting loom to my S5 b8.5. Spent hours today in VCDS hunting through CAN blocks and trying to work out the coding side but I've been defeated until further knowledge gained.
Is there anyone here that can assist with guidance?
Thanks in advance

The 8.5 is different to the B9 in terms of coding so PM me and I'll see if I can help you out

Hi,
I apologise if I'm in the wrong place I'm a newbie, but I too am interested in fitting the Side Assist. I had it on my last Q5 but it was missed off my new Q5 TFSI e. I'm a bit concerned about removing the rear bumper (I have the folding tow hook) and the door cards to get at the electronics, although maybe my door controllers are suitable as I have folding mirrors ? I also wonder how the wiring loom gets inside the car from behind the bumper, and taking that off looks a mammoth task :dunno:
The door cards will have to come off I assume to run the wiring up to the door mirrors.
Is there a detailed description of how to tackle this what looks to me to be an enormous job and is there a kit available ?

You have to contact andyhud007. He is the master of Audi retrofitting.
PM him and I am sure that he will reply and will tell you what is needed to retrofit Side Assist and if your door controllers are suitable or require the replacement.

I fitted this remotely with the on-line & phone assistance of Andy and, like everything, if I had to do it a second time it would be a fraction of the time.
But break it into logical steps and it works out fine. The loom from the sensors in the bumper goes through the same large grommet as the reversing sensors and connects to power & can-bus behind a panel in the rear (Q7).
Allow enough time, and if it was winter I would want to be indoors! As best I recall I did it in summertime, and that saves freezing fingers. Bumper is not so bad, but best if you have assistance ( I was alone).
As previously, Andy is your man.

Hi Andy,
I would like to attempt this retrofit on my new Q5 TFSI e, as I had it on my previous Q5, but it concerns me that I might end up
1) breaking something
2) not have the requisite knowledge to complete it, and end up with the car un-usable!
I can see that there are parts kits available but also that some coding and removal of component protection is required.
As I have had an argument with Audi here in Helsingborg ,Sweden, about the lack of side assist on the car, I don't really feel like going to them for any help, they've been useless so far!
Are you able to help with a more detailed procedure description and parts required. I think the door controllers will be ok as I have the folding door mirrors.
Best regards
Peter

Hi Peter
Send me your VIN please via pm or email me at info @ audiupgrades.co.uk and we can chat there.
Your door controllers may need changing even if you have folding mirrors
Thanks

as per my previous post, it is feasible as a DIY task, with Andy's assistance. He can do the coding remotely assuming you have RemotePc or similar utility & VCDS. He did that for me (in Dublin, Ireland). I am reasonably practical, but this was a first for me and it has worked perfectly for several years now. A well worthwhile upgrade. Upgrading the door lighting to exit assist is a tricky practical exercise, and in truth debatable if it's worthwhile. But Side Assist is excellent, and RTA nice. Exit assist...? not convinced but it may depend on circumstances.

Finally after all the COVID disruption have I fitted side assist and exit warning. It was all made possible by Andy Hudson from AudiUpgrades. The guy is an absolute genius and first class gent. He even flew out to Sweden to help me. I canÂ’t thank him enough.
System works great, so IÂ’m very happy.
