View Full Version : Must have options on a used C7?

Hi folks,
Well it looks like it's time to move on up from my B8 avant to a C7.
I am not bothered about an avant again as my wife has a Touran and lots of space for the weeken run to the garden centre!
I'm embarking on a new job with a 70mile round trip commute 4 days a week so my mileage is going up from circa 12k/yr to 20k and I want the comfort but still good mpg.
I'm going for around £19-20k and a 2013 or newer car. With sub 40k miles on the clock.
I'm not bothered about Sline, actually I prefer the ride in SE over Sline, but the Sline looks nice.
What option packs (when new) are a must to look out for and what are you guys opinion of the Sline & black edt cars with what they come with over the SE?
Any input appreciated. [emoji3]

The A6 is fairly well specced as standard (Sat Nav, leather etc) so there aren't many essential options (unlike, say, the comfort pack on an A3). However, one thing that isn't standard is heated seats, and leather can get a bit chilly on a winter morning without them! They should be easy to find on a used car.
Most options I'd put in the "nice to have category" - these are the ones I'd look for, along with comparative rarity (when I bought my 2012 Avant):
Heated seats, as above. Fairly common.
Tech pack - adds better Nav, AMI, bigger central screen and colour DIS. Fairly easy to find. Definitely lifts the interior and (especially) the dashboard but doesn't really do anything the standard Nav can't.
Tech pack advanced, as tech pack but with adaptive cruise control, lane and side assist - not that common (and auto gearbox only) but should make driving much more relaxing if you're doing a lot of miles.
Lighting/Ambient lighting pack - really lifts the interior of the car at night, and gives nice looking LEDs under each exterior door handle. Fairly common
BOSE sound system - worth it if you like listening to music, more so if you like to turn the volume up. Fairly common, and standard on Black Edition.
Reversing camera - very useful but (for some reason) very rare, at least when I bought my 2012 car. Can be retrofitted for about £600 (which is what I did). It was only available with a parking pack on facelift models .
Surround View cameras - awesome and make parking child's play, but good luck finding a car with them fitted (hen's teeth are easier!).
S-Line and Black Edition models mainly add styling features over the SE, such as bigger wheels and bodykit. However, pre-facelift S-Line/Black Ed spec added Xenon lights (SE models had halogen as standard) which are worth having IMO - facelift SEs now have Xenons as standard. The S-Line seats are also more adjustable than the SE's, offering lumbar and extra leg support - I found the SE seats too short in the leg. Electric comfort seats (and Xenons/LED lights on pre FL cars) were options on the SE.
DAB and electric tailgate (on Avant) became standard in MY2013 so most cars you look at should have these, but possibly not all.
Facelift cars (2014 ish) gained improved engines (but they need AdBlue), and 4 zone climate control, which is a bonus because it has an LED temperature display (the pre-FL 2 zone system doesn't which makes temps hard to see).

I'd def go for
TECH pack which gives AMI , Colour driver display , google maps , audi connect, bigger and better resolution MMI screen -
So glad I went for the tech pack as resolution on the basic MMI screen is quite poor -
heated seats - sadly I don't have these
front and rear cameras ,front and rear corner cameras - I have this option , very useful.
advanced key - have this option , very useful
memory seats -have this option , don't use this feature .
I don't have night vision , lane assist , park assist , ACC so can't comment.

Bizarrely, memory seats is a required option if you want surround view cameras (think it's because the control box is under the driver's seat). Probably why very few people specced them - that effectively makes it an £1800 option instead of £900 (and you need the tech pack as well).

Yep I would have defo had the 360 parking camera but had no interest in memory seats.
I think the Tech Pack with upgraded MMI will be seen as essential spec, come time to sell. Cars without this will be hard to shift.

I'd personally underline the heated seats - cold leather in the winter is not pleasant.
The Tech pack is also very desirable.
Also, headlights. If you get a 2013 SE you'll probably only get halogens as standard. S-Line has xenons - I personally wouldn't want to go back to halogens now.
However, if you do get an S-line, try to find one with the standard 18" alloys. Given your preference for ride quality, probably best to avoid the huge BE wheels. Which also seem slightly ludicrous on a 2.0 diesel luxury car.
Having lived with a lot more toys for a few months now, I'd not class any other extras as "must have". Nice to have, certainly, but you won't feel short changed without them.

Great stuff, thanks.
I'm only interested in auto and have driven both S-tronic, multitronic and the ZF trans in the Jag XF, there's no comparing a robot clutch to the smoothness of a true CVT so although the ultra engines are better on fuel and have a few more horses, I'm likely to stick with a 177ps and multitronic, not sure this is the best thing for resale in 3years but in 3years there will not be anything (newish) with a multitronic in it, this is the time to have one IMO.
Definitely looking for the tech pack then.
My A4 has color DIS, does this mean it was an upgrade or was that standard on B8? Semantics really!

I think multitronic was pre-FL only, so if decent headlights are important to you bear in mind that SE cars of that vintage will have halogens as standard.
Colour DIS was probably standard on most B8s but (if it's anything like the A3) it's basically the same as the monochrome one but with a bit of red/green text. The A6 colour DIS is totally different to the standard one - it's a different shape, considerably bigger and higher resolution. It looks like it's the same part used in the A8.

As you say elsewhere you are probably looking a 2.0 with Multitronic at that price. Not a big issue but be aware that you will be subject a "Dieselgate" recall on this engine. As to options to go for, as others have mentioned heated seats, although I have never actually bothered when speccing my car from new. Tech Pack is a nice to have and the first owner will have borne almost all of the depreciation as it has negligible impact on the trade in value. The finance guy at my dealership actually talked me out of speccing it on my current car as he said financially it was not worth it.
Assuming you get a car built after May 2013 then you will get DAB as standard. Pre that date then it was an option, but many added it so it should be easy to find one with it. Worth getting Xenons if you are looking at an SE, they were standard on the S-Line and BE. 4 Zone AC (has digital temp display) is also much better than the more basic 2 zone system and worth looking for. Pre the facelift you could spec the colour DID without the Tech Pack. Also be aware of the Audi Connect issues if you go down the Tech Pack route and depending on the precise build date Audi Coinnect was not always included as part of the Tech Pack. Again I think it is pre May 2013 for EU cars it was not possible to use a phone for calls and have a SIM in the dash for data. Putting the SIM in the dash meant that had to be used for calls too. This changed for MY14 and it is possible to get the MMI software updated to permit this but it does require a cooperative dealer (many say it cannot be done) or someone you know who is willing to do it and done wrong it can brick the whole MMI system. If you are planning on using a phone that supports rSAP (typically an Android based devidce) then it is less of an issue. There are many posts on here about this so do some research.

Makes a refreshing change for someone to consider what they want before buying a vehicle and then asking questions about the cost of retrofit, which is usually an extortionate price. I also just don't get the need to try to make your car look like something it isn't?
My experience of one C6 and two C7's (pre and post face-lift) is that if you can stretch to it, go for a post face-lift vehicle, or at least a pre face-lift with the s-tronic transmission. The difference between multi and s-tronic is huge and gives a much better driving experience. The FL LED headlights are really good and well worth looking out for. My must haves are heated seats and tech pack. Again, if you can find one I would also highly recommended the advanced tech pack as adaptive cruise control makes driving on busy motorways so much less stressful, especially in slow moving traffic where it just stops and starts with the traffic flow. The additional safety feature of front and rear pre-sense that comes as part of this pack is also worth having - just in case! The bundled high beam assist is pretty crap as it is inconsistent when moving from dip to main so I wouldn't bother unless part of the pack.

Can I ask why you prefer the S-tronic? I found it jerky and uncouth compared to a manual (the human interface is infinitely better at smooth clutch control than an ECM) or even an old fashioned slush box ( think torque converter in C4) but I did try the Stronic in a 59 plate A5 my friend owns and the Jag ZF auto clutch was better than the older A5.
Bi xenon headlights are a must, I retrofitted them to my SE B8 and would never go back to halogen, what is the FL LED headlight?

Yes, the 177ps multitronic seems to end in 2014 with the 190ps ultra engine and Stronic taking over.
I am not bias either way for the engine, in fact who could complain about better mpg with more power. but the Stronic box has yet to convince me

Facelift S-line cars are fitted with LED headlights as standard. These don't offer significantly more performance than Xenons (imo - I have LED headlights on mine and the wife has an A3 with xenons) but do look better. You can also spec Matrix LED lights on facelift cars which are reportedly a lot better because they have much more control over the automatic high beam. They also have dynamic sweeping indicators, which look great!

I love the indicators!
But I don't want to pay for them [emoji15]
Right now Leicester Audi are taking the p!$$ on the cost of a car they have that fits the bill, 2K over what a non Audi dealer has that's almost exactly like for like in Gateshead, but I have to do my homework as Leicester Audi is 3 miles away and Gateshead is 160miles!
It would come down to the APR offered I think.

If I had to start stripping options out of my car, it would all go - the heated seats, the high-end Infotainment system, the electric this and the optional that - leaving only one option: ACC with Lane Assist. It may sound like a frivolous option but it has transformed my life (spent chugging up and down the motorways of Britain). There is simply no comparison between a car with standard CC and one with ACC; I can drive 500 miles in a day and get out and still feel reasonably alive simply because the ACC and Lane Assist de-stress journeys so much. It is the one feature that every car I ever own after this one must have; everything else is a nice-to-have.

Personally I'd keep thinks simple. I left the extras alone and went for the Black Edition S Tronic instead.
Heated seats are a must as many have said previously. The lighting pack gives the interior cabin a real lift at night. Privacy Glass does a lot for a cars appearance but this one is a bit of a marmite extra - love it or hate it. For me other extras fall in the 'toys' bracket - if you can afford them great but if you can't you'll enjoy the car no less.
I didn't bother with Tech Pack on my second FL Black Edition and can't say I miss it.
Don't be put off by big mileage - my first FL had 20,000 miles on it when it was written off after 6 months. It was barely run in. Go for a good clean car that makes you smile.
Happy hunting.

My must have option is quattro, after that heated seats, AMI, BOSE, advanced tech pack and bi xenons. Could give advanced key, cameras, heads up and sports diff a miss.

My must have option was the three litre diesel and quattro. There is a world of difference in driving characteristics of the bigger engine and whilst I was going Audi, it had to be quattro - helps with pulling out of junctions in we weather (its pretty busy on some of the roads I used when I bought it!) and across the hills and country roads around Derbyshire at certain times of year.
My car has heated seats - wouldnt be without them - and the half alcantara interior - which I personally love as its just a bit different but still looks quality. I also have the tech pack - I probably dont make full use of it but I like the better screen, colour DIS is great too.
Its a bit more than £20k but will be up for sale next week - sadly I have more cars than drivers now and it has to go. I will miss it - easily the most accomplished car I have had (including Mercs, BMW, Volvo). Good luck with the hunt.
As for finance - use your bank rather than Audi, you can probably get 3.5% on a straight personal loan!

I drove several A6's, both 3.0 and 2.0, the 3.0 Quattro/Multitronic is easily the nicest balance.
Spec wise, heated seats (ideally all round if you have kids) are a must, the tech pack adds a lot and I like the whole big screen, colour DIS, Google Earth/Wifi thing as it works really really well.
I have the advanced parking plus with cameras front and rear, it helps but I still rely on the beeps and the distance warning more than the pictures so it's no big thing.
The only thing I don't have that I really wanted was the ACC.
Good luck with finding a car that gives you everything you want within your price range.

This is not necessarily true, Pre FL it was possible to have Colour DIS without tech pack. You would have a bigger screen and the touch pad without the 2 horizontal bars across it, just numbers 1 - 6.

Three fairly easy ways. But note that on pre-facelift cars Colour DIS does not mean Tech Pack as it was available as a separate option. In fact initially all of the components for Tech Pack (HHD MMI, Colour DIS, AMI and depending on model year either Audi Connect or (I think ) ACC) were available separately so just because it has one of the components does not in itself mean it has Tech Pack. More than one probably means it does
1 The SD cards slots beneath the CD slot are behind a cover. If Audi Connect is also included then the SIM card slot is there too
2 The Number Pad on the transmission tunnel is more like the touch pad of a laptop. On cars without the Tech Pack this panel has 6 discrete buttons within it
3 The display on the pop-up MMI screen goes right to the edge. cars with RMC have a smaller screen and wide black panel.

What you really need is heated seats, colour dis, dab, and a reversing camera is nice. Never missed tech pack, wouldn't use auto cruise thingy, twin zone works perfectly well. You can go on and on, just depends on how thick your wallet is. Personally? I would love soft close doors but would I pay for them? Course not.

SE could be a bit basic for your requirements, but i know what you mean about the ride...
I tested a few A6's back in 2013 and seriously considered the Black Edition as it had nice 20" wheels NAV, and B&O sound..
In the end i opted for A5 Coupe Black Edition, and have been very happy with it. (just felt a bit younger)
My advice would be to have a good hunt around, the A6 Blacks & Slines, were selling cheaper than my A5 back in 2013
as they couldn't shift the bigger cars at the time so there should be some good deals out there.
Good hunting

Before my B8 was a golf MK 4 GT TDI, so it was a big step up, before that was a US car, a C4 Avant 2.8 V6 Quattro, that was one of the best cars I've owned.
I was looking at the A5 sportback, but it offers less room in the back than my A4 and the ride was no smoother either, so now looking forward to being back in an A6.

If poss , compare the screen resolution on the Tech pack which includes colour display between the dials and Non Tech pack with lower screen resolution and black and white display "in the flesh"- some non tech packs may have colour Dispay between the dials as mentioned previously
i put a deposit down on a non tech pack A6 over the phone thinking the resolution wasn't to bad, went to the dealer did a comparison with and without tech pack and cancelled the orginal car and went with one that had the tech pack.
Think some where there's a post comparing the tech and non tech

Actually as I'm the wrong side of 40 and have a clean license I think my insurance for the A6 is going to be quite low, it is only £275 on my A4.
There is 3.0L cars in my budget, but not bitdi, I am going from 12k/yr to 18-20k/yr mileage too, I have to be sensible about running costs.

On the topic of insurance, I went from an 8 year old C6 2.0 insured for £280 to a new RS6 insured for £470. Both include breakdown and 15k miles estimated per year. I was pleasantly surprised and I'm sure it'll go down next year.
However, parking in the garage, a tracker and *ahem* an age bracket boundary are all conditions with the new car.

That's funny!
I did drive the Jag XK sport and it was like a skateboard with the 20's and stuff suspension. It did however have Ford's heater windscreen which comes as standard on the XK and was one of the things that put me off, it's awful, I couldn't stop focusing on it and it gave me a headache.
The same in my dads new Focus, they recon it's nearly invisible... Yeah like poking yourself in the eye with a cocktail stick 'nearly' doesn't hurt

I believe initially Ford had exclusive rights to heated windscreen technology, presumably they funded the development with Pilkington. Seems that exclusive deal has passed and it is now offered on a wider range of cars including the new A4. Presume we will see it on C8

We always get heated seats sue to the wife..... She loves her heat patches, plus since having a heated steering wheel in our X5 that's a great option. Here in Scotland it's a welcome treat on a cold cold damp morning!!

Found another car and much closer to home!
It's 17k, £1.5k more, but has (in order of importance to me:-
More cylinders! (3.0 215ps)
Tech pack
Metallic paint (Oolong)
Heated (all) electric (front) seats
Lighting pack,
19's from factory
Rev Camera
s-line
44K miles
The car I had a deposit on was a 12 plate SE with metallic paint, heated seats and 19" dealer fit alloys and 29K miles.
I think the 3.0 and the options are worth the extra £1500, but with the car being a year older and 15K more miles?
What do you guys think?

My mistake,
It's the car up north that is Oolong, this car is 'metallic grey' as below (pic of actual car from auto trader)
Not sure what paint code, but I will find out on Saturday when I drive it and possibly buy it.

It's £10k+ more of a car and a near perfect spec.
A no brainier for only £1500 more.

Looks to be quartz grey, now replaced by tornado grey. Had QG on my c6 and have TG on my current C7. Like the colour and has the benefit of not looking dirty as quickly as silver or black

Hello Alex,
Just rest assured, Oolong Grey is not brown. In the UK the light is much poorer than those USA pictures, Oolong grey will look like super dark grey 99.9% of the time.
Only when really bright light hits it does it paint flek a dark metallic brown ting like oolong tea leaves (hence the colour).
If you see it on a normal day in the UK, you will be looking @ dark grey.
I have one and there is no feeling of " I'm driving a brown car" if anything it reminds me of those Ford cars where the paint use to refract colour depending on daylight...
I hate white cars , truly think it's a girlfriend colour, but if one came up in Quattro 3.0V6 you wont see me saying... Oooo I don't like white...
HERE IS MINE in normal Feb. Daylight (UK) Oolong Grey.

p.s. Alex, I have 72,000 miles on my V6 and still tight.

Thanks noscream, I had (still have) a deposit on a 2.0 A6 up in Hateshead and that one was Oolong, I canceled him this evening, he's saying he'll have to ask his boss if I can have my £100 back as I may have 'prevented a sale this weekend', not too happy about that, but I'm glad I'm going with the 3.0 car.
The only thing I didn't want was the S-line lower suspension and given the choice I would have stuck with the 18" wheels. I just hope it doesn't seem too stiff when I drive it on Saturday.

Alex the SL suspension on the C7 cars is a revelation. Much more compliant than the C6 but with even better body control. It is as though the car is a quarter tonne lighter.
I'm sure you will like it.

Thanks for this,
I haven't actually driven a C7 S-line. My concerns were based on B7 and C6 S-line cars of friends.

I'm on an S-line with factory 19's and the ride is very good. My previous cars were a D4 A8 and D3 S8, both on air suspension and the A6 isn't much less comfortable than them.

I'm less concerned now, unfortunately the car is in Litchfield and driving over to Leicester so that I can take it on half of my regular commute to Lemmington is not realistic.
I will drive it on the local A & B roads to check how stiff it feels, but everything else says this is the right car so it's very likely I'll be coming home in it

Gutted.
Got 10miles towards the dealer...
Then a phone call.
'Sorry to tell you we drove it back from the work shop towards the showroom and stopped for diesel and couldn't get the fuel flap open' so the shop has the parts on order and will fit them in Monday/Tuesday.
I got the paperwork signed and (subject to no issues) we will trade on Wednesday.
But disappointed to not be in my new car this weekend though.
Rant over.

don't worry, it will be worth It in the end. I went in to pick up my a6 BE and it wasn't ready so had to come back the next week, but did get them to throw in the life shine pack (£500)
I always say, if your getting an audi you've got to have an s-line. if you find the steering stiff you can adjust it in the car settings I believe and ride.

Lifeshine pack can be bought off Ebay for about £30.......and if its not applied properly can make your paintwork look terrible!
i always haggle for things you can physically see like mats, accessories and fuel :)

Well the dealer got the fuel filler by lunch time so it was delivered this afternoon.
I thought the biggest step up in car I would notice was from my mk4 golf to the A4 B8... How wrong I was!
This thing is a spaceship!

VCDS I have, bought it for my rear brakes on the A4 and did all the usual mods to the A4, needle sweeps, TPMS on, seatbelt bingbongs off and plenty more I can't remember.
I will start on the A6 slowly, first I need to learn all the gadgets already in there!
Not sure if the MMI is latest?

i will be honest in that I don't have the first idea! And neither did the seller on Ebay....it had only just become available so I went with that
Next problem is to find a local dealer who doesn't double charge for updating your maps!! I've had one quote of £419 yet I know of a dealer across the bridge who only charges £200.......
