View Full Version : Looking to buy a 2007 Q7

Hi guys,
First and foremost, a happy new year to everyone here.
I'm new in this section as I'm presently driving a 2005 3.0TDI A6.
However I've got some road trips coming up with a pretty big family and might require a 7 seater car - needing a car that is big, comfortable, luxurious, reliable, handles well and have some 'go' in it. Hence I've so far narrowed down to the Q7 or the X5.
Hope to get fellow forum people's opinion on this:
1. A 3.0 vs a 4.2?
I'm right now deliberating between the 3.0 or the 4.2 engine. I would love the 'go' factor in the 4.2, but trying to determine how much more does it cost to run it (fuel, servicing, insurance etc). From what I've read so far, it appears that the 4.2 is only slightly more thirsty?
2. Things to watch out for
I'm planning to go to a dealer to buy the Q7. However I would like to know what to look out for so that I don't buy a gremlin. This is the car that I'm looking at so far.

3. General feedback
What do you think of the car? Is it a massive pain to park? How does it feel to drive and own one? Is it reliable?
Thanks so much in advance.
Cheers.

Cannot comment on the 4.2 as have had no experience, I've got a 3.0 and its a brilliant car for a large family, yes they are heavy on tyres but don't let that put you off. I have managed to run mine on a budget by doing something's myself. In my experience the biggest thing to look out for are inlet manifold problems on the 3.0 around 70k. They are well built with loads of gadgets and handle really well, highly recommend!

Thanks so much sir.
Just wondering, how can you tell if there is an inlet manifold problem?
I'm already mentally making up my mind that I'll probably do the 4.2
Cheers.

Hello, unfortunately faults like that cannot be seen before buying, but it one of the problems the 3.0 has. Good luck you won't regret buying a q7

Hello, one thing that I would add is that it's worth going for one with a panoramic roof as my daughter absolutely loves it and it does bring so much light into the car. I also have the 21" alloys and would advise that you don't get. They do look good, but the clost of replacement is massive, you get a huge amount of road noise and don't go anywhere near a kurb because the alloy will get damaged as the tyre provides no protection.
Hope this helps...

Hello, the panoramic roof is something I would like on my next one, I also have the 21" tyres and I am currently buying them online and saving, I have heard that even the 20" wheels are heavy on tyres, and yes you scuff the rims quite easily, the tyres I am currently trying have built in rim protection.

I will agree with the tyre costs on the 21's as i'm in the process of getting some new summer ones for mine as i am currently rolling on my 18" winters.
i have a 4.2tdi but it is the newer one with the extra bhp and the fantastic 8 speed gearbox.
I don't do a lot of mileage but do tow a caravan etc with mine and the fuel consumption can vary massively.
For example cruising on the motorway at 70 i can get into the 40's on the dis but trundling about as i normally do it normally drops into the 20's.
When i got mine it was already remapped tho so i'm unsure which way a standard car would go.
Like you i went from a 2007 A6 lemans 3.0tdi (via a nissan pisstaker i mean pathfinder briefly) to the Q7 and you wont regret it but i would budget easily a third more in running costs over the A6.
For me these are all about the toys and the original owner of mine ticked every box literally then added more after so i would look around and see what they have and what you would like.

Hi
I came from a 55 3.0 A6 quattro to an 08 3.0D S Line.
1. - I loved the oomph the A6 had and whilst the 3.0 Q7 isnt as quick its a different driving experience and is quick enough. The 4.2 would be great and tbh thats whats probably next but no complaints so far here. getting about 30 to the gallon and do a fair few miles each week so the 4.2 would be a bit thirstier for me.... but you can't take it with you lol...
2. watch for the usual rattle on start up that 3.0 diesel engine can have stuck timing chain tensioner and big pennies.
2. inlet manifold runners fault ( Engine Management Light on ) again not cheap
3. air suspension compressor can overheat
BUT cant say how common these are just these are the things I got told to look for when I got mine.
3. Parking no worse that the A6 but the doors are bigger and you have to pick yout spots or you don't get out of the car.
3. driving - best car I've ever driven and mega miles with no bother. will be going newer and possibly 4.2 next so that a good indication
3. had mine 8 months and no bother yet
Hope this helps and if you need anything else then shout, but I dont have any regrets at all swapping from the A6 up....

Hey guys... Thanks so much!!
So my latest updates here - I've put a deposit down for a Q7 today.
It's a 3.0TDI Limited Edition ( I wonder what's the difference with limited edition to be honest?!)
I saw the engine check light coming up when i started up but they assured me that got triggered when they washed the engine bay. Hence I had a big provision written that I will get deposit return if there are indeed issues with the car.
While the price is fantastically good, I worry that this car had 4 previous owners. But 2 of them changed car within a month of each other. So I'm not sure if I should be worried or not. What do you guys think?
As much as my heart says 4.2, my head and the domestic CEO says 3.0. As always, I obey.
Cheers.

Do we have any links to the advert.
It may be a limited edition if it had the dark grey lower bumper trim side trim and wheel arch covers. it was a limited edition called the offroad package that became a normal option.

Looks like nice original car to me, average mileage, I think you can pay for AA or RAC independent checks but personally would focus more on having fault codes read if there is any, as they tell if there's any record of faults even if they are intermittent.

Hey guys... I pulled out of the deal today. There was a check engine light on. Apparently the error code was the feared inlet manifold. Sigh...
I really liked this car alot and I thought the deal was good. But I rather not have the headache, time and cost of fixing a manifold issue.
What do you guys think?

There is a cheap temp to perm fix for the manifold in that you can get the link rods etc the parts that wear for about £20 instead of the massive amount for the new inlet manifolds.
Surely the dealer should have fixed before sale tho.

I read about the low cost fix. However I'm not very 'technical' so am not sure how to DIY. However if one of you guys know how to, then maybe i can get the car and treat you to a superb dinner after the fix.

ok guys... I'm now a proud owner of an Audi Q7 3.0TDI. So I'll be lurking around in this part of the forum going forward.
Any Brummies here? :)
Oh yes.. first order - I'm looking to swap out of my 20 inch wheels. I'm thinking of dropping back down to 18 inch - to improve the fuel efficiency, ride quality, and cost of tyre replacement. I'm cheap you see.. :) Anyone wants to do a swap? Of course you need to top up a little for me.
Cheers.

Hi all, new here.
I too am looking at a getting a Q7, In the market for a used model, 3.0 Diesel. Trading up from a Volvo XC90 (my 2nd which I've been impressed with)
Anyway, a couple of questions that I'm struggling to find the answers for:
1) Most adverts and car guides indicate the Q7 has Xenon's as standard. Are these active lights that steer round the corner? More usefully is there a button to switch from Left hand drive orientation to right hand drive orientation like there is on the XC90?
2) The parcel shelf, does it fit/stow behind the 3rd row of seats when all 7 seats are in use?
3) Wheels and Tyres - What size wheels will reasonably take snow chains? I don't want to go for 22" alloys and then not be able to get chains to fit. Are there chains available for 20" wheels?, or do I need to stick with the ridiculously small 18" wheels?
4) Do the models with the panoramic roof also have blinds fitted? Logic to me says a glass roof is noisier than a proper roof? Anyone have a view on this?
5) How much are roof bars?
6) Anything to look out, particularly with higher mileage cars, I'm probably looking at about a 2008 plate with 80-150K on the clock.
Thanks in advance.

1) Most adverts and car guides indicate the Q7 has Xenon's as standard. Are these active lights that steer round the corner? More usefully is there a button to switch from Left hand drive orientation to right hand drive orientation like there is on the XC90? Short answer no. Adaptive lights are an option on the option of Xenon lights. The beam can be converted by VCDS on facelifted Q7's i'm led to believe.
2) The parcel shelf, does it fit/stow behind the 3rd row of seats when all 7 seats are in use? It has to be removed unless you are lucky and a previous owner purchased the fold away rear cover.
3) Wheels and Tyres - What size wheels will reasonably take snow chains? I don't want to go for 22" alloys and then not be able to get chains to fit. Are there chains available for 20" wheels?, or do I need to stick with the ridiculously small 18" wheels? Would 21's with summer rubber then 18's with winter rubber be better as essentially the rolling radius is the same for chaing its just the width that would be more on the 21's
4) Do the models with the panoramic roof also have blinds fitted? Logic to me says a glass roof is noisier than a proper roof? Anyone have a view on this? Yes they do have an electric blind on the front roof and a manual blind on the rear. Noise wise mine is nice and quiet with the pan roof, but my Q7 is double glazed which includes the roof glass.
5) How much are roof bars? For genuine used is approx 125+ new 220 ish
6) Anything to look out, particularly with higher mileage cars, I'm probably looking at about a 2008 plate with 80-150K on the clock. If you go for the 3.0tdi try to see if the inlet manifolds have been replaced or if the actuators work, check everything works, check for staining of the roof liner front and back highlighting possible leaks from sunroof drains.
Specs as they have a lot of options available including some being produced without even nav fitted and a tiny basic screen in the middle
Thanks in advance.
Mike
Hope that helps

Hey Mike,
Could I try to address your questions with what I know so far.
1. No! Not every car comes with Xenon lights, especially if you are looking at an older (07/08) model. My car has Xenon, but I'm not sure if it can switch to a left hand drive orientation.
2. Not sure about that because mine doesn't have a parcel shelf
3. I think if you are looking for chains, you should be able to find 20inch ones.
4. Mine doesn't have panoramic roof
5. Mine comes with roof bar.
6. You might want to look out for engine check light and also the suspension light. There are issues with the intake manifold which would be costly to repair. The suspension pump could also be another expensive item to repair.
I've checked out the XC90 and the Merc GL before settling for the Q7. I would say that XC90 feels a little underpowered to me and the rear space (with 7 seats up) seems tighter for me.
Hope this helps sir.
Cheers.

Well I took the plunge and am now the proud owner of a 2008 Q7 S-Line in Black with black leather and 22" alloys - very happy with it, looks amazing.
After a weekend of use I've got a couple of questions regarding use of the MMI in relation to SatNav, Media and Bluetooth telephone
Sat Nav
1. Is there a way to enter a destination using just the Lat/Long in degrees, minutes and seconds? I used to be able to do this on the Volvo XC90 and it is a brilliant way to find a place, especially as the Q7 does not have a full postcode database
2. Is there a way to store the current position as a favourite? e.g. I'm parked at a customer location, can I simply store current position as "customer name", again something very simple to do in the Volvo.
3. Are there upgrades for the SatNav available, 2008 Maps are woefully out of date, what are the likely costs? are they Audi only?
Telephone
1. I was able to search with my phone and pair to the car which is great
2. However, directory data (names and numbers) have not synched to the car, which is not great? Should this have worked? My phone is a Motorola Moto-G 4G, and I know that Synching contacts works with this device, because they sync to a Parrot MKi9200 car kit and also to a native Volvo XC90 with Bluetooth in-built that I had as a hire car.
Media
1. Should I be able to stream music from my phone to the car stereo via Bluetooth, again something I've successfully done before with other vehicles and car kit combinations.
No doubt the Q7 offers a superior drive to my old XC90 of the same age, but I was hoping for a little more functionality in the Media and Navigation space.
Thanks in advance for any comments or answers

Glad your enjoying it, I too want to update my satnav so be interested to see the replies, can only comment on one of the points, we have i phones and we connect the phone to media via a cable from underneath the arm rest, I think it's called the ami, audi do different cables for different phones and we stream music through media function.

I too am looking to buy thou my first thoughts are for a C6 A6 allroad, thou the Q7 looks tempting.
Its a second works wagon my budget is limited to years 2006-2010 going by prices abroad (I need the car abroad).
So if I may ask what are real world mpg figures for motorway cruising for say a 2007/2008 I think the engines were modified 2009/2010 , they seem to give better mpg.
Does mapping make a big difference to economy.
Thanks

Picked mine up Friday 27th Feb put 15 litres of diesel in it to get home (50 miles), then put 66 litres of diesel in it on Saturday morning to top it right up.
So far I've done 330 miles on this tank, and the range computer reckons another 160 miles to go. Driving in heavy commuter traffic on county roads and M4 (Mo-Tu) and then Basingstoke to Esher on M3/M25/A3 (We-Th). I've not been shy in using the accelerator when needed, and even Sport mode at times.
Too soon to really tell what the economy will be, but on Saturday I'll brim the tank again on Saturday, and work out based on miles covered for litres inserted, and will post results here.
Gut feeling is that it is looking slightly better than the XC90 that I had before the Q7, but of course the tank is much larger than the official 58 Litres on the XC90.

OK Well I filled up this morning as the fuel light came on with 50 miles to go in the range computer
I'd done 425 miles and put in 86 litres (86 / 4.546) = 18.9 Gallons
425 / 18.9 = 22.5 miles per gallon
But that is without driving as economically as possible, and a lot of time idling in traffic.
Taking a long run to Devon later this month so will see what it is like then at soaking up the M4 and M5
I've not driven the XC60, but I've had one 2005 XC90 (manual with 163BHP) followed by a 2007 XC90 (Auto with 182BHP). Both are very sluggish in comparison to the Q7, but the XC90 Auto does return 27 mpg. If you're doing 18,000 miles a year like me, that's a difference of about £800 a year in fuel or £66 per month when compared to the Q7
Had I been able to afford it, I might have looked for a newer XC90 with the 200BHP Engine - I had a 2013 model as a hire car, while the insurance was being sorted out, and this drove very well indeed. Much better than my 2007 182 BHP unit, but with a recent run of very big domestic bills, wasn't on the cards this time.
I'd have loved to go for the all new XC90 with the Twin Engine Hybrid powertrain and 8 speed auto gearbox, but not this time either. :-)

When you think of it like that £800 a year is not that much for the joys of having a Q7...

Hey, I am about to buy 2007 Q7, too. I was browsing the Internet for a couple of days trying to find the cheapest option to play music from my iPhone (Spotify) and it looks like that I need an AMI cable with 30pin connector and 30pin-to-lightning adapter, so I could charge my iPhone 6 and play music. Is it correct?
Also, I've seen that it is possible to have Bluetooth streaming without re-wiring, there's a dongle that connects to the other side of AMI cable, via 30pin slot. Am I right?
Having said that, I have no idea which cable or dongle is compatible with this car. Could anyone please give me some links to both options, cable and Bluetooth dongle?

I found the genuine Apple adaptor to be the only one that works with the 30 pin lead, if it's like mine there will be a cable coming from the ami in the armrest, I have tried the genuine audi cables but none worked with my iPhone 6.

Mine doesn't have AMI cable too, so I just bought FM transmitter, it works great. Do you have TEL button on your MMI controller? It should be next to Radio, Media, Names. If you do have it, then you should press TEL+SETUP. There you should see Bluetooth options, if you have it.
