View Full Version : Question Glow Plug Warning Light Flashing

Today I started my Allroad A6 2.7 TDi quattro and a glow plug warning light appeared on the dash. It was flashing. I connected it to VCDS and the error is "Throttle Valve stuck or difficult to move". The engine revs sound like it is pulsing or there is somebody playing a tune with heavy base. When I open the bonnet I can hear a very fast ticking sound coming from the front right area of the car (passenger side).
Looks like my throttle valve is gone. From some research online it seems like the usual Audi thing where these throttle valves fail regularly on the A4, A6 and Toureg but Audi don't offer any assistance.
I cannot see a part number for it.
Does anybody have a part number for a throttle valve for a 2006 A6 Allroad 2.7 TDi?

In this thread Link:- Solved What is this sound when the car is turned off? - Page 2 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?150423-What-is-this-sound-when-the-car-is-turned-off/page2)
I think info in post 15 apply, VDO P/N search info in post 18.

Hello Motionpotion,
you will need to check whether it's a 4 pin connection or a 5 pin. The 4 pin is 4E0 145 950 H.

@fmc51 How can I check this? I have just ordered one from euro parts and now I am worried I may have ordered the wrong one although it only gave me one options: http://eurocarparts.com/search/422440800/p/home

Just pull the electrical cable plug off and look into the socket and see how many pins are sticking up.

@Motionpotion your links to ECP site not showing item, just a generic page. At the time when I got mine these guys were cheapest Link:- P.W. Euro Parts Ltd (http://www.pweuroparts.co.uk) their web shop is not great give them call/email, I found them via ebay, searching either the VAG or VDO P/N.
The electrical connector is no the lower side of TB, you may also wish to view this thread Link:- How to: Replace Throttle Body (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?154177-How-to-Replace-Throttle-Body)

@gupsterg I'll try again with this link: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Audi_A6+Allroad_2.7_2006/p/car-parts/engine-parts/fuel-and-engine-management/throttle-body-service-kit/?422440800&1&fc12f07efdc7763b0a319ebd32f38138b68e2ef0&000329
I have looked at the part currently on the car and I cannot see any electrical cable so it must be underneath it and if I take it off I would not be able to see into the pins as the cable does not seem to stretch far enough. I probably need to take the whole part off the car.

Yes elec.conn on underneath.
The part you link is good price IIRC I paid about £250, be aware when I tried my number plate in ECP site as it not accept VIN it give me option of both TB's (4/5pin) and I know mine 4 pin due to VIN/visual check/MVB's via VCDS.
It's an easy fix, just the lower bolt on TB is pig due to room plus if you drop it gotta take undertray off or a magnetic bit/pickup tool will help.

I looked up the German VDO site and it gives both 4 and 5 pin options. All you have to do is enter your engine code, like BPP. The link is here; VDO Webcatalog (http://web.tecdoc.net/vdo/home.jsp#1e2214ac8e8e89cce469939d51e66f8e)

I managed to squeeze the camera in to snap a photo of the connector underneath without disconnecting it. It looks like I have 5 wires into the cable so presumably I have 5 pins on the other side. Hopefully this helps somebody else trying to decipher this part.

Hiya motionpotion,
Your problem is exactly what happened to my car last week (a6 2.7tdi Quattro 2006).
After you have replaced throttle body it is worth checking turbo actuator (if it's possible to do so). That buzzing noise you've described in original post was due to motor moving back and forth uncontrollably. That places great wear on said part.
I let garage to sort mine out and once they replaced throttle body car livened up so much,no faults on diagnostic.
4 days later engine management light was back on dash again with turbo stopped working witching next 3miles.
Took it to garage again and they diagnosed faulty turbo actuator. After buying repair kit and fitting it -turbo still at standstill.
On Monday they expect visit from "turbo specialist" for second opinion, just in case if mechanics missed some little silly detail.
They told me not to panic about turbo just yet but I have already prepare myself for worst.
Hope yours will survive.
By the way what is your mileage?

Mine has 140000 on the clock. I'm expecting another 140000 on it.
The new throttle valve was fitted yesterday. Is there some reprogramming that I should have done because VCDS says no faults at the moment after fitted.

Believe or not but mine went at 140k as well.
Don't really know about reprogramming as garage has done mine.
How much was throttle body to buy?

No adaptation/programming required :)

It was £236 + 9.50 to ship it to Ireland. There's a few links above in the thread. Mine has 140000 miles on it. I work in miles even though Ireland has changed to metric. [emoji1] It was €450 euro from Audi for the same part.

I spent some time this weekend taking apart the throttle body part that was taken off my A6. Hopefully this might help somebody else.
Below are the results. It is not badly coked up with soot at all. But from the photos you can see that the plastic cog has worn out. My only conclusion is that this are designed to wear out and fail. The throttle body itself is heavy duty and then Audi/Siemens put in these little plastic pieces that only have a relatively short lifespan. Then they won't sell the worn part separately from the rest of the throttle body.

Above the penny was stuck initially but sealing correctly with the inside of the pipe when I freed it up and flipped it around.

The problems are caused by the wearing of the teeth on the black cog located behind the white cog that flips the penny when accelerating.

Above picture after I have cleaned the soot and carbon off (and removed the white cog) you can see that the teeth on the right side of the black cog are almost completely worn off compared to the right side of the cog. This is just bad design. The cogs on the white plastic cog are also worn.
