Problem with key or starter?

Can't work this one out.
I started having problems with my key fob where it wouldn't open the central locking (It would still lock it every time) I resorted to opening the car with the key in the lock until recently where a couple of times I noticed when I put the key in the ignition it wouldn't start the car.
I checked the battery in the key fob and sure enough it was getting low so I replaced it. Unfortunately it hasn't solved the problem and I still cannot start the car, I also tried with the other key fob (which normally works) and now both won't start the car... HELP !! :zx11:

Does the component protection come on for a flat battery? Not sure, but I do know that the battery management can shut down components to preserve battery capacity.Maybe worth checking the voltage...12.5 fully charged.

12.1v on the multimeter with the doors closed. Can the Component Protection message be cleared with VCDS ?
Both keys seem to open and close central locking ok at the moment but neither key will start the car when the ignition is turned.

Car is a sitting duck, so reluctantly purchased VCDS. I was hoping to hold back till VCDS Mobile came along but this car is causing me grief.
Can the Component protection message be cleared with VCDS?

No component protection cannot be removed or cleared using VCDS.

You will need to get the Fault scan done to find out which item is causing the fault and then Audi or a good specialist is needed.

No one will be allowed to post any other ways of sorting this out due to this being a car security issue.

The fresh air blower is a pre-existing fault I'm aware of where the fan doesn't always work. From googling that error it looks like an expensive fix as the whole fan unit has to be replaced.
Not sure about the flat battery as it was showing 12.1v on the multimeter when I checked.

Did you save & clear the DTC's several times and were any of them disappearing?

Looking at your scan/symptom you describe concerning gaining entry/starting vehicle my £ is on to investigate J329 Terminal 15 relay.

J329 is Terminal 15 voltage supply relay it is directly linked into J518 Entry and start authorisation control unit plus is part of starter, alternator, starter motor relay circuit diagram.

From what I've looked at it is behind trim where your knee would be when sitting in drivers seat.

I've fully charged the battery just to make sure and also cleared the DTCs but the component protection message is still there on the MMI and in the VCDS scan.

Problem I have is I can't even move the car or take the car out of 'Park', it's completely disabled!

J329 is the SDC code for relay, it will not be printed on relay. If you ask at an Audi dealer parts dept they will supply relay from that code plus cross ref with VIN , etc.

Red line = J329 , green line is same type of relay from what I've viewed, that is supposed to be J360 High heat output relay and is in the circuit engine speed sender, radiator fan control unit, low heat output relay, high heat output relay, radiator fan.

Now DTC 00576 is explained as :-

Fault Location:
Terminal 15 - Electrical Fault in Circuit/Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Possible Cause:
Power Locks operating at random while driving.
Radio doesn't turn off when key is removed from Ignition.
Battery drain.
No audible confirmation from alarm horn when arming alarm system.
On the Eos, the front windows may drop down a little if rolled up all the way.

Defective Ignition Switch (Electrical Portion).
Wiring harness issue.

Possible Solutions:
Replace the Ignition Switch (Electrical Portion).
Repair damaged wiring harness.

Now I'm hoping by doing MVB's in module 05 you'll be able to see something which tell you that ignition switch is fine.

In the link for J329 faults you will see replace CU, I'm assuming that mean Control Unit, I did storta read up what CU this may relate to but will hold off for now.

After you cleared DTC's did same faults come up? P/N for J329 4H0 951 253 please do double check this with vag dealer.

Just swap the relay with the other 370 relay to see if the relay has failed.

Post up your engine code and gearbox type so that i look up the correct drawing for your car.

If the relay swap does not give back the instruments then you are looking at a J518 module fault as the relay coil grounds via this module.

If a J518 module fault then dig deep as the post on the net that i have seen quote over £1400 to have replaced, if you handy with tools this maybe less but a trip to Audi or a good specialist is needed for the CP removal.

My MVB 200 in module 19 is same as your MVB 001 in module 19, as my car is 2005 yours 2009, see how you had 0.0v at term 15?

MVB 23 in module 05 would have shown you that IMO.

Put the new relay in the J329 position to avoid the other relay failing.
370 relay Part No is 8D0591253.

Buy a new one even though a used one is £3 on ebay if it cost you £20 from Audi then its money well spent.

Hi all. 2006 C6 A6 3.0tdi manual.

This just happened to me. Stranded 100miles from home. Key in the ignition normally audibly disables the steering lock but nothing this time. MMI works, and obviously the door locks but no lights on dash and can’t start engine.

I have no tools with me sadly. Checked all fuses on DS end of dash. The steering wheel was free to turn though, almost as if the steering lock was never on?

Audi A6 (c6) 20007 , bre engine code ,140hp tdi, automatic gearbox. and where is terminal 50 relay .

and so far I found 2 relay in Ecu box,1or 2 relay opposite I believe is glow plug relay ( engine compartment)

1 in bonnet and 7relays what in picture.

Have you checked the airbag fuse (Battery isolation igniter) on the battery cable for the terminal 50 supply as this may have failed.

The other relay that could cause you issues is the Terminal 75 relay as shown below.

Check the 3 strip fuses in the rear fuse box panel, they are the diaganonal postioned ones.

Then check the SB40 fuse, and after that you have a bigger issue.

i was looking about your mentioned sb40 fuse . I one manual I found vacant. In second I found sb40 on fuse board B 5a -j685-display unit for information display and operating unit control unit and third manual said sb40 on fuse board B 25a - dual tone horn relay,treble tone horn.

i was checked driver side and passenger side fuses and rear (bonnet), ecu fuses and of course 3 big fuses under steering wheel all this fuses is ok

You have 3 wires, 2 of them are crimped together look at your picture.

From your video is shows that the ignition side is good, you need to check the battery boost terminals for power and for heat as if hot then this will cause a high resistance and stop the current flowing.

There is nothing on the scan that will prevent the starting of the car. Have you checked at the starter motor to see if you are getting power to the solenoid when the key is turned over?

Is there a 12 v feed to the motor on the main power lead?
Is the engine ground lead good?

The ABS faults are standard when the battery has been replaced and will clear when the car is started and driven.

The J359 fault relates to a the auxillary heater that your car has fitted, this could just be a 40A fuse blown (this located under the J519 Module).

Another question that needs to be asked can you turn the engine over by hand to rule out a siezed engine?

Hello everyone,
my A6 C6 avant 2.0 tdi is "dead". Insert key and nothing happens. The main problem is that my garage is too narrow for a tow truck to come in and with the car dead is close to impossible to push it out. So I'm stuck, literally... like the car :(
Tried jumper cables with other car, nothing changed.
Removed the battery, took it to the shop. They tested, charged it overnight and said it was good to go.
Next day, mounted the battery in the car nothing changed, except the installed component not valid warning when I turn the mmi on... I'm 99% sure it wasn't there before I removed/installed the battery.
I went and purchased a vagcom, I've never used one befora.
At first the car wasn't communicating, I tried the brake+hazards+high beams and it started the scan.
1st scan fault codes almos everywhere.
After clearing all the fault codes at once... and then clearing one by one, on the ones that I could access, this is what the car is left with:

1st of all thanks for the reply. I don't know if theres any way I can test the ignition switch ??

Anyway, someone said to me that the scan couldn't be accurate because it wasn't communicating with all the modules.
Adviced me to jump wire the back of the obd connector (pin 1 and 16) and make a new scan.

That same person is saying that it's 100% the steering column module that needs to be fixed/replaced ?

In your first picture, Group 001 shows "Terminal 15 Off", but in Group 003, Ignition switch E415 Status Terminal 15 On.

Both should be the same, ON with the ignition switched On.

I don't have a wiring diagram, but this suggests to me either a wiring fault between the Ignition Switch & Terminal 15, or perhaps a faulty relay that supplies Terminal 15 power.
