The mrs just had 4 new tyres fitted today buy a local tyre shop. I phoned and spoke to them first and they said we needed 215/55/16 Extra Load tyres.

She went down today and had them fitted and I've just looked at them and they've fitted 215/55/16 93V which aren't Extra Load !

Are these the correct tyres for a 2004 VW Sharan 1.9tdi or should we take it back ?

Most online Autocentres or tyre manufactures have a box to input your vehicle details or car registration number and it will tell you what tyres the manufacturer recommends.

Either inside of your fuel filler flap or drivers door jam there are a list of tyres suited to your car.

When I bought my Sharan it was fitted with Meteor light truck tyres 195/60/16C 99/97H 6FR tyres, I showed them to my brother in law who's a tyre sales man and he said they were the right ones. The Sharan is basically a small truck so all tyres have to be suitable for trucks.

You do know it's a normal car chassis?

Reinforced is the type of tyre necessary, which has a higher kg rating than the same standard car tyre.

The tyres have 650kg weight limit on them so x4 is 2600kg. Kerb weight of a Sharan is 1678kg apparently so going by that these tyres should be fine shouldn't they ?

The tyre should have a minimum 94Y load index, this isn't a legal requirement or mot failure -just good sense. The weight figure you quote is unladen, gross weight is much closer to 2600kg.

The correct load index is a legal requirement - if not you run the risk of points and fine with the risk that the tyres might give up. If the spec says extra load then that is what they should be so if the tyre centre has not fitted them take it back and make sure they fit the correct tyre. Bear in mind that these four small contact patches keep you on the road and if one or more goes pop the consequences could be fatal. The 94 rating gives you a max load of 1340 kgs per axle which is beyond the axle limit of 1280 kgs whereas the 93 gives you 1300 kgs, only just above. So 94 extra load should be correct, the extra load meaning you have more plies in the carcass which means it deflects less when loaded. I always had extra load or reinforced tyres on my Sharan. Don't take chances.

If the spec says extra load then that is what they should be.

Where is that stated?

It usually states the tyre size and pressures for differing vehicle loads inside filler flap but I suspect it does not say "Extra Load" relating to tyre construction there.

In the handbook it will say what tyres need to be fitted or if you ring a VW dealer they will tell you. I suspect that as they are 16" tyres they will not have to be reinforced or extra load (XL) tyres.

look at the tyre size again on the sidewall, if it has the number 97 near to the letter v then its an xl tyre.

the v refers to the speed rating, but the number(97) is an index of how much weight the tyre carries.

for instance my galaxy has 65 series tyres and the standard load is 92 but the xl tyres are 95.

That will only tell you the spec of tyres fitted. They could have been incorrect when fitted.
Look in the handbook for the spec for your particular model.

This VW guide (http://docs.jayzone.eu/erWin/VW/Golf%20V%20&%20Golf%20Plus/Workshop%20Manuals/Running%20Gear/Wheels%20and%20Tyres%20Guide%20-%20Archive.pdf) may be useful. I think around page 428 it is saying "215/55 R 16 95H reinforced/XL", but you may spot a different spec as matching the vehicle.

First mistake was sending your woman to the tyre fitters, guaranteed to get fleeced. Your lucky you didn't end up with new brakes and shocks and loads of adjustments after the four wheel tracking was miles out.:aargh4:

Absolutely yes you should go back and get the correct tyres fitted.
