Help needed please
i have a 2002 Petrol Mk4 Golf v5 auto tiptronic.
About 2 months ago the transmission started playing up. Very harsh gear changing almost jerking backwards before changing.
Took it to my regular garage who plugged it in and reset some settings. Sorted- for about 4 days, then back as bad. Repeated twice more.. Then they sent away the Throttle Body for testing and reconditioning.
Sorted - for about a week. Diagnostics showed everything correct in the settings. A few days later, it's better than it was, not the severe jolt on gear change, but is now noticeably surging between gears, especially when cold. After leaving for 30 mins, turn it on and it's smooth again. Really annoying and not sure where to look now. Can anyone suggest a cause?

Hi
When was the last time you had the oil changed in the tiptronic gearbox?

Hi
When was the last time you had the oil changed in the tiptronic gearbox?
Hi Mark,
ive had the car a year and not in that time. Done 49k now. Might this be a cause.

I have heard of dsg gearboxes that have a slight slip which would seem to be from the clutch, and a dsg oil and filter service has corrected it.
Thought it might help in your case. Worth trying ?

I've contacted the local dealer and they are going to test drive on Thursday. They did say oil change as you suggested so thanks and I'll let you know.......

Mark. They test drove it cold and noticed the slipping. Diagnostics showed no faults (sort of good news) so they have suggested changing the gearbox oil as you said It has to be ordered and is due in Fri or Monday, so fingers crossed Tues morning it's booked in, again. Will keep you posted

Spoke to soon. The severe gear change returned on Friday morning. I'm hoping the gear oil change might improve the change problem and the slipping.

Hi Mark,
despite being booked in for yesterday, they apologised and are looking at it this morning.

Oil changed and unfortunately it's still slipping. So before the shunting gear change issue comes back it's off to the local garages and find a trade in. Real shame. Love the car but it's jut not reliable and a new gear box is uneconomic at over 3k.
Thanks Mark for your assistance

Not improved despite the oil change. Slipping when cold. Went to take it around a few garages looking for a trade in against another Golf and the drivers window winder packed up. It's trying to tell me something. Also noticed that even when cold the slipping seems to go if the car is turned off and back on again.. Further investigation on going.

Gear oil changed . No difference. Still slipping when cold and surging intermittently. Garage says new gearbox is an option. Too expensive so looking at options to trade in.

Still slipping and the harsh surge is back. When it goes the only thing to do is pull over and turn off and on again. Seems to clear it for a short period.
