Using a copied disc? If so thats the cause, if not then get a DVD lens cleaner.

Mines done this a few times in a year - nothing major, a simple restart of the MMI fixes it (3 button reset)
I've had this both with the original DVD and the copy of it I've made - I tend to use the latter for 99% of drive unless booking into service simply because of the value of it although Audi have never complained about either.

It did have a copy disk in but it was in it when I bought the car and I have done the reset once and tried a proper disk but I will try the reset again, can you tell me the buttons to press again please

press the SETUP button, the main big round one in the middle and top right soft button together.

It will just restart the MMI assuming you have not tried simply removing the key and reinserting it which does pretty much the same thing

In that case I would try

1. Clean the DVD and reinsert (can you hear it spin)
2. Try the original DVD - does it work
3. Use a cd/dvd cleaner to clean the lens
4. Last resort, maybe the drive has gone kaput.

Also try and see whether the DVD is readable and fully scannable in your pc/laptop. You can get various checksum type tools to check the integrity but as mentioned by Chris, copied DVDs can have issues. From memory, you have to burn it using 1 or 2x write speed which while takes an eternity, is more reliable.
Also I think from memory it only runs on a DVDR+ and not - but I might be completely wrong here. Been a while since I did it.

Pop the DVD out and then put it back...mine does this occasionally and this seems to fix it ok......maybe an idea to copy the nav disc over to an SD card incase the dvd is on the way out.

Good idea backing it up but even better would be to create an iso image of it so it's a replica (where manual copy may miss out hidden files/any sort of navigation loader etc)

I meant to use the copy function in the car itself...apparently takes a while but makes an exact copy and the nav system is then run off the SD card instead of the DVD.

Apologies, I assumed it was the 2G/non-sd version

Erm...actually I too was assuming its the 3G....it may indeed be the 2G version...in which case, ignore my post!

Try making a copy on your PC free DVD burning software usually has a "make an ISO from disk" option. If that fails you can get a new one or buy a set of software udate disks from ebay - mine came with an updated NAV DVD FOC.

Unfortunately the nav interface itself remains as carp as it was before - unable to enter a full postcode like I can with a Thomas Thomas.

Sometime ago when I did the DAB retrofit to my car my Sat Nav would come up not installed, VCDS showed some Nav errors like power or comms, the supplier of the power splitter cable I'd used sent me new cable which solved it.

Recently I started getting check DVD on Sat Nav use and I had genuine disk, I first ejected disk and inserted it and still no Sat Nav, then I rebooted MMI and still no go, upon disconnecting reconnecting power plug to drive all function ok so either wiring have fault in my case or drive have bad connector/fault.

At mo it happen so rarely that I'm not fussed to investigate it further in my case.
