Just had my oil and filter changed at Audi wakefield, they used shell helix ultra 5w-30 rather than the recommended Castrol. Sure its fine but anyone else found the dealers have switched to this brand from what's mentioned in the service book

Yep, Belfast seems to have changed aswell. Noticed it on my invoice.
I'll not worry though as its obviously been taken into consideration.

That is the only oil I have ever purchased from my Audi garages and that goes back at least 7 years

Speaking to a guy in the oil industry recently (a distributor), he was saying that Shell oil is THE pinnacle of oil & the one that all other manufacturers strive to equal. He wasn't a Shell disty in case you're wondering, he was a Fuchs disty & only stocks a couple of Shell products.

It doesn't really matter which brand of oil you use as long as it's approved by VAG for your particular vehicle engine. Your car manual will state the relevant VAG oil specification number. Any oil approved to this specification is O.K. I try not to mix different brands when topping up but I may use different brands when doing oil changes.
ASDA are now selling Castrol Edge 5W-30 (VAG 504/507) for £30 for 4L.

You shouldn't buy any oil without checking the Oil specification number. To quote oil descriptions is entirely misleading. The oil quoted in the above link is not 504/507 approved.

I've used the shell helix ultra extra in my car in the past (first car I've had to top up before annual service due). I've heard mixed opinions on mixing oils. The main thing is the correct spec is used.
