View Full Version : Door courtesy lights?
JayA3sline
01-02-2014, 08:43 AM
2011 audi S3 3 door. On the doors their seems to be either red reflectors or red door courtesy lights? If their lights they are not working (conveniently at the same time) or are they just reflectors.
Silly question I know but looking at upgrading interior to LED so would be changing the courtesy lights too if it's a light
regards
Pop the lens off and see if there is a lamp.
They are part of the interior light package.
There should also be puddle lights in the bottom of the door.
bloody smart phones....

Nope just a reflector, that's a shame! No light under the door either I think A4 have them though. Nevermind.

You can retrofit them, there is a user over on ASN which makes the looms.
I have his front and rear footwell looms and extra boot light mod loom installed and can't fault them.

Do you have pictures of the extra boot light as I could do with more light in there tbh

Chris I've managed to change all the interior lamps for canbus led which have worked a treat. On tutorial on YouTube their was a guy saying that for the boot light you need to tap into the existing loom with a variable resistor is this the case or was it just a straight swap halogen to LED. That extra boot lighting looks smart, be interesting to see if it's simple enough to do as agreed with Jonathan...

No instructions needed as it's basically plug and play. You just need to remove the trims on either side (one screw either side as you just need it to pop off) and the one which holds the warning triangle which just pulls up. You then just need to dremel some of the slats away to house the new light, simple!

I had no issues going from Halogen to LED, straight swap. If you want the supplier of mine let me know and I'll forward details.
I'll take a few more pics this afternoon to show how easy it was/is.

Guest 2
02-02-2014, 10:37 PM
Which looms are you on about?
If you install the footwells your DIS then gains the option of footwell brightness, right from 0-100%. I have mine at 30% and they're nice and not too bright.
jonathanfenton
02-02-2014, 10:40 PM
Both? I was going to buy all 3 looms from that guy just wondered if I needed the bulbs as well? Or if the looms come with them already?
Guest 2
02-02-2014, 10:42 PM
Boot light loom just runs off the original boot light so same brightness.
Footwells and boot light loom come with original halogen bulbs. You don't need to upgrade to LED, that was my preference but they are a massive improvement.

Suppose I could install kit that comes and then if I'm not happy brighten them up with the leds. Have you bothered with the map lights and puddle lights?
Guest 2

My car doesn't have puddle lights or active reflectors but I've upgraded to the ambient/map reading light in the front and rear and fitted LEDs to those.

JayA3sline
02-02-2014, 10:54 PM
Thanks for the PM Chris. They don't look very bright, maybe it's the camera quality. I did buy some off eBay but they were quite good and not the OTT bright ones we all see and hear about as they only had 2 LEDs per lamp. What did you pay for the lot?
Guest 2
02-02-2014, 10:57 PM
Thats the ambient light, gives a nice subtle glow down on the centre console area when the headlights are on.
Basically what you'd get if your car had the interior light package, I've basically retrofitted all of the interior light package bar the door puddle lights.

Can't remember off the top of my head but send Trups a message and see what he says as mine were bought nearly 2 years ago.

Ok mate thanks. I do like the look of the under door puddle lights and red door end lights. I just hope the wiring is different for the 3 door compared to the 5 door as I know I had continuous problems when changed my registration light for LEDs. And had to buy a resistor pack and it was different to the sport back hatch in the boot which isn't on the 3 door.

This is a long shot but can you remember if there is still the space where the Emergancy winder would go if you had the electric sunroof, only reason I ask is because I have put my gps antenna in its space lol. Sorry if I'm annoying you with all these questions :-)

The light is no bigger than the original.
If you're referring to the circular empty area on the back of the light u it, then yes it's still there :p
And no worries about the questions, ask away :)

The door looms, footwells and rear boot are all custom made so I can't see them being too different.
Re number plates, if you want total reliability fit the OEM Audi LED units.

Yes I did end up using OEM number plate LEDs just needed to install the resistor pack into the wiring loom behind the boot panel. About £80 was spent just to get this look, more money than sense sometimes after messing around but it's done.

Also did you have to cut out areas for the lights to fit or are they pre blanked off in case a customer wanted the additional package later on. So in summary you just ordered through robin, plugged them in and away you went with no errors/ additional system updates to do.

This could be a problem then, as I have no access to this. Would main dealer turn it on for me? Or would they charge a extortionate amount... How does everyone else access this?
jonathanfenton

There is a thread in here with people's location. They will charge you beer tokens normally. I have full vagcom and am on it based near Blackpool. Main dealers probs charge you the £95 labour rate not sure about independents I saw on one once they charged. £10 for each code activation which i still think is crazy! I paid £200 ish for professional kit and have done loads with it so well worth the money :-)

Well my new interior light unit turned up.... The plastic bulb cover was scratched over the two main bulbs and the whole unit was oily and filthy! So used my own cover and scrubbed it clean with meths. Came up good.... Not too sure what the mood lighting will do as they seem really dim. Had to transfer over the built in microphone as new one didn't come with one and also a strange looking unit which was underneith the alarm sensors... Looked like the end of a blow torch lol very confused!! On another note robins looms didn't turn up today so rather gutted as planned to do it all today.. Never mind! Anyone any ideas what the sensor under the alarm sensors is? Should have taken a pic :-/

The red lights will change brightness depending on your dash light control thing is set at. Ie if you have your instrument lights turned down the rest will be down. Mine seem fine, I have a spare led diode thing you or Jay can have if you want.
Which alarm sensor are you talking about? The one in the middle or the two behind the grille thing?

So ive installed the footwell lights. Had a nightmare with a snapped wire, think the wire was crimped to tight into the plug that went to the rear light. Managed to solder the wire back on.... will have to see if it holds as was fiddly! Next is to the do the boot light but might wait until tomorrow when there is light again. Did a fault scan and it came up with:
1 Fault Found:
17057 - Cylinder 3 Glow Plug Circuit (Q12)
P0673 - 000 - Electrical Fault
Freeze Frame:

Load: 0.0 %
Voltage: 11.63 V

Robins loom. He crimped two wires into same pin and crimper must have chewed the cable so after a little manipulation it snapped.

Oh great. Ill give the cables a pull before I start installing mine then. I'd ask for a replacement loom...or another crimp and pin to make it off yourself as once a join is snapped it's got a weak spot now hasn't it.

Very smart! Although I do like the S3 gloss trim. Probably won't look to bad if it's keeping the all black look anyway! How long you reckon to do Chris? I've read some people don't even need to take the grab rails off if you can get an extension to get the last Bolt? Or do they need to come off as the grab rails bite onto the side of the tray?

Correct, the handles sit ontop of the tray, makes things easier and less prone to damaging something.

Cigarette delete mod completed, very tidy. I have left the ashtray red light under the gear stick as I couldn't figure out a way to incorporate the red light into the tray. I've read on some threads that if the car comes with the Interior package as standard then there should be a light under the AC unit however I don't have this. I couldn't feed the wires to the very back either as it's in the OEM cable tidy black material. Id like the light though if possible, any suggestions?

Same here, if you're gonna do it then may aswell do it right! Hence why I'm fitting a genuine removable towbar, genuine electrics and control modules!
Same with my parking sensors, ripped out the old aftermarket kit and spent the £ on the genuine factory kit.

I presume you actually need the towbar Chris, or are you thinking it may come in handy at some point. As I know I've gone for some extra mods (cruise control on my old A3 s line) that I don't think I actually ever used! Oops

I do or will need it in the future, its easier fitting it to the A3 than the A6.
Will be completely hidden when not in use of course as I got the new lower valance with towbar cutout sitting in my garage.
So far I've retrofitted;
Cruise
RNSE MK2
OEM Bluetooth
Audi Music Interface
Footwells front and rear
Ambient Light front and rear
RNSE Antenna upgrade
OEM led number plate lights
Auto dimming rear view mirror
OEM parking sensors
OEM towbar (awaiting)
Non smoking tray
Blackvue Dashcam
Once I have the towbar done I'll buy the button for TPMS then I'm done!

What's the antenna all about? Just better radio reception or is it for traffic updates on the sat nav? I hardly listen to the radio so not sure if it'll benefit me. Im really need to do mods but not sure what else to do, and now that I have VCDS myself the worlds my oyster! Muhaha! My wiper arm went sloppy after I had to rag it off when motor had leak and needed to put new motor in. Ended up cutting the shaft and the. Putting shaft and arm in vice and smashing it to split it!!! Never got round to fixing it it still works just doesn't sit perfectly at 90o when parked. On a side note after front wind screen was replaced the drivers wiper occasionally misses a bit right in my view bloody annoying tried 3 sets of wipers (genuine) and reseating arm to no success...... No idea how to fix it all I can think of is that the windscreen isn't the same shame as the old one lol

I got it off by putting pliers in below the spindle and went round and loosened it, came off fine with no damage!
Heres the link for the Q5 rear, I offered £20 and they accepted.

Reason I changed the rear wiper was for this very purpose, there was no pressure (on mine anyway) on the middle of the blade on the sweep so left a streak, fitted 3 Bosch wipers and it kept doing it so found that online after researching one night. Has been perfect since and looks far better :)

Jon... Want to see some pictures? I'm very much into my car detailing and took it to the next step by wet sanding my car which uses 4 different grades of fine grit sand paper to get rid of orange peel (that wavey look you get in all modern paints these days, even from new). If you can imagine peaks and troughs as orange peel (highs and lows of paint levels) and wet sanding basically is just slicing away at the peaks in order to make the paintwork flat (as it should be) which in turn makes the paintwork look incredible (better than brand new) reflections are insane!

Jay; when you did the ashtray delete mod, did you have to remove the climate control unit? or did you just use an extension bar to get to the back bolts?
I've also read that some people have been able to just use an extension bar.
JayA3sline
23-02-2014, 12:56 PM
No mate I didn't pull the climate control out, although I did in the end just out of curiosity. It was quite stiff to get out but if you hold the top and pull down and out or if you got something to prise the top out first it just pops out. But I used a long extension although you do have to get your head right down so you can see where it's going.

So today the parts arrived for the ashtray delete ambient light to be installed. See pictures below for a better idea. Quite fiddly and you find yourself getting in some awkward positions especially as the unit is underneath the HVAC controller. Sitrep:
Rear wiper arm arrived, as feared its a copy not genuine, had to soak arm nut in penetrating fluid to get it to split, put Bosch wiper on only to find it was too big..... Had to use wiper that came with... all in all what a colossal fu** up.
Parts for auto dimming mirror arrived, went and collected. Used PIN out as described in post that Chris provided:
Pinout;
Pin 1 = +12v on turning lights on (Where to get this from would depend on if you use the instrument lighting dimmer or not as when you dim the lights the power goes to 6v which makes the mirror inoperable!!!) So you have to run wire to a switched +12v which i got from back of radio CAN BUS adapter.
Pin 2 = earth (Can be used from interior lights)
Pin 3 = +12v from reversing lights (optional) This is wrong! its -12v as its a switched ground circuit. The Mirror is looking for a ground. I ran a wire to the back of my radio which has a CAN BUS adapter and a Reverse + but not a - so i couldn't use this feature. Found this out by running an earth to this pin and it stopped it dimming. No idea where you are supposed to pick this up from, presume there a plug with a pin missing under the fuse-board but i cannot be bothered to even look for it!
Pin 4 = exterior mirror output (optional) presume ok not tested
Pin 5 = exterior mirror output (optional) presume ok not tested
Pin 6 = +12v from interior light (optional) Same as Pin 3, they basically do the same thing, stop the mirror from dimming. The interior light is always powered with a + so you can switch lights on without key and when you open door etc. The only time the + is disconnected is when you lock the central locking. There is however a switched - on the main connector which i tapped into which provided the ground when the lights ECU switches them on ie when unlocking opening doors etc. But this just means that when you open the doors it will stop the auto dimming not switching the lights on manually whilst driving?. To enable this feature properly your would need to run this pin to each individual light which is just ludicrous unless there is a special pin on the back of the light unit which only goes to earth when one or all of the lights are on?? For me personally i never drive with the interior lights on so i'm not fussed if it dims because its seen a light in the cabin.
Would welcome any thoughts on this.

Must've missed your post, sorry.
Mine looked pretty genuine, even felt solid and Germanic. Send the wiper back to ECP and get a refund, mine fitted perfectly, odd.
Does it function when just using pin 1 and pin2? My original plan was to get live and ground from the fuse box.
No idea on pin3 or 6, wasn't planning to use these anyway. I'll have a look online and see wha everyone else has done in relation to this, seems a phaff to me.

The arm is solid and works but like as I said just doesn't look quite right (to me), I got my dad to look and he didn't notice and he's an Audi aficionado.
Works fine with pin 1 and 2, used it in anger last night and noticed it varies the amount of dim dependant of the ambient light quiet impressed was followed by someone with a headlight out and the other was super bright worked a treat :-)
Also found out that it illuminates the power button and dims the green light only when it thinks it's dark so there's no illumination wire to phaf with. As I have it wires to ignition + the mirrors on when ever the car is so during day it's bright green and then at night it dims the light and illuminated the power button in red :-)

I've just been researching and reading about dash cameras when I came across a link which you were involved in:
Blackvue 'Dash Cam' installed in A6! - Page 4 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?150613-Blackvue-Dash-Cam-installed-in-A6!/page4)
Since recently being involved in an accident although I had an honest 3rd party who admitted liability I do want to take precautions. With that said, have you got any recommendations, or information to these cameras?
Do they require to be wired in or push/play before driving?
Are they illegal? Fail mot etc?

The one I have I highly recommend and got from here - BlackVue DR380G-HD (http://www.bebutton.com/DR380G-HD-GPS-Uberwachungskamera-mit-GPS)
I actually bought 2 and they arrived next day Special Delivery at 7am and they were only paid for at 4pm the previous day.
I have mine semi-permanent wired in using a Fuse-Tap loom which creates an additional 12v cig socket wherever you want it (in my case hidden behind the dash out of sight) then it powers on and off with the ignition so no interference is needed unless you're removing it. Wire is then run up inside the A pillar cover, across the headlining to the over head light then obviously down into the camera. The only wiring you see is about 4cm's worth and if the top of your screen is tinted then its virtually invisible.
They're not illegal and will pass MOT as they're just classed as an accessory. They're handy to keep an eye on the service guys when the car is in.
I'll upload a few more clips and pictures into this section later this evening and let you see.

Cheers Chris
They look quite smart. If there wired in will that affect the car start up if the vehicle isn't driven for a week or so as I have to do on call at work so leave my car for a week or so from time to time. Last thing id want is to try driving and have a dead battery. Also thinking about it, it'll stick out like a sore thumb with my cream roof lining. Did you retrofit yours yourself, simple enough?

I have the same headlining as yours and its fine, doesn't stick out but have had people glance at it in traffic but no biggie.
Fine leaving it for a week, its only on when your ignition is on so no problems running the battery down, you can just unplug it from the mount if you want also and keep it indoors.a
I'll go take some pics now before it gets dark.

Ah brilliant, and I take it's got a night vision mode too for evenings. Another few mods in line for me then coming up

BlackVue cameras as a brand seem to be well rated.
I've been monitoring an interesting conversation thread at Which? (http://conversation.which.co.uk/transport-travel/dashboard-cameras-recording-car-incidents-safety/#comments) on dashboard cameras and Auto Express have just reviewed them: In-car camera reviews - 2014 dash cam test | Auto Express (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/85714/car-camera-reviews-2014-dash-cam-test)
But what I came across was a website whereby you can report dangerous drivers for prosecution with the recorded evidence (paid subscription required). The cameras that they sell are tested by them to be suitable image quality for evidential purposes. http://www.policewitness.com/
According to a youtube link, in Chris' A6 thread, to someone that reviews dashcams, he says that having infrared sensors just reflect back on the windscreen so you are better off with a good camera in low light.

Nice topic of conversation there Alan. I like the debates that are strung to topics like this. I'm guessing there are lots of different types out there just a matter of reading some reviews and simplicity that works for me and others, at the end of the day no one wants to have an accident and be claimed against for all the wrong reasons.

I spent ages looking for mine, considered Roadhawks and some cheaper chinese ones but the Blackvue done the job and was reasonably priced.
Videos uploading now, so check in this section for the thread shortly.

Yep, took 30 minutes.
Although gizmo68 made the fuse tap loom so cheated a bit :p

So it was just a plug and play after he did the loom? So where did you have to connect it too? As in where there 2 pins to connect to "x" and "y" or more complicated

Plug and play once he did the loom, the loom is simple I could've done it myself but not got the greatest confidence in wiring.
Basically just pull out the fuse for the rear wiper, put this fuse into the fuse tap loom (it fuses both), then the fuse tap fuse into the slot on the fuse box and presto, working rear wiper as before and an extra 12v cig socket. I've taken pics which'll show how its set up, videos are just finishing.

On it! 👍

Encouraged by this post, I replaced the ash tray. Reasonably easy job except for the loss of the 8mm socket somewhere below while getting out the tricky bolts. Hope it doesn't rattle too much........

I lost one of the bolts too down there, can't hear no noise but there better down there so I haven't got to try get them out again. Just turn the music up... 👍

Unfortunately, the 8mm is the one which is required to remove most of the bolts in the car..... I think that I probably have one sitting in a tool box somewhere from the old set. Also, I decided not to put the rear ones back in again as they were too much of a pain. Might do it when I feel in the mood.
