HI All,

Not to sound too stupid, but how do you know if you have dpf on your car or not? (i was told if the exhaust pipe tips are facing down or hidden that you don't have dpf, But if they are straight like petrol cars then you do have dpf on your car? Is this true?

Cheers in advance :beerchug:

I don't think there is any truth in that at all. Straight exhaust tail is petrol, downward facing tailpipe is diesel, although this may not be the case 100% of the time. The best way is to look at the option codes for the vehicle, a ticket in the spare tyre well and/or in the service book. Option code 7GG = Emission standard EU4 DPF means there is a DPF fitted to the vehicle.

A modern diesel has a DPF, older versions don't. A quick google of model years will reveal when the manufacturer brought DPFs in for your model.

I think that is an old wives tale. Mine has DPF and straight twin exhausts. It is 2009 2.0 ltr TDi Highline

Thanks all, and thought so that it would not make sense. I did have a look in the service books, manuals etc, but its more of an generalisation then to my car. i did have a look on the dash with a torch yesterday and the symbol is there but does not light up when you first put the key/fob in like the other lights do, hench why im wondering if i have one. as i dont have front fogs but the light on the dash is there when you shine the torch on the dash. But i will check my sticker in the boot, if i have one, in relation to those codes.

cheers again all for the advice :biglaugh:

Basically it was an option on BKP's until 2007 and standard on BMR's from 2005, the 2008 1.9PD's I'm not sure have one and all 2.0 CR's do.

7GN means no DPF.

7GN means no DPF.

7GN = Emission standard, EU4, DPF preparation

I've gone right off this forum!

For the almost seven years since I joined I've been convinced my car hasn't got a DPF - no 7GG on my sticker! But because of this thread I've looked into it a bit deeper and discovered that the 0GG on my sticker means exactly the same as 7GG. :zx11:

No need to get angry if you haven't had any problems in 7 years!

Perhaps I should have mentioned that it's only done the equiv. of 30k miles. Fortunately it has to work hard round here.

Time will tell.

My 2008 CR engine had DPF and downward pipes. In fact, I believe every CR engine in a Passat was DPF, whereas it was an option on most PD engines. The changeover was during 2008. You could order a PD engined car from stock but not to build in April that year, but I believe there were still quite a few that lurked about and didn't get registered until very late 2008, maybe even early 2009.

All things cosidered, I'd buy a CR engine with DPF over a PD any day of the week.

Mileage is no indication, yours is a CC isn't it?

CR it will have, 170PD it will have, 140PD it might have, if you don't see the idle go to 1000rpm now and again you don't have one,

They aren't the end of the earth anyway you just have to know how to look after it, sadly the companies don't educate anyone, my Insignia has one, not once in 9k have I had a warning light, I just simply follow the rules, if it starts a re-gen let it finish, if I'm on the motorway I hold 3000rpm for a few minutes, even when I had it in VX for a SW update the sheet came back no re-gen required dpf clean and that's cos I know I can use 50p of diesel or pay £800 for a new dpf, hth.

Mine (admittedly a CR) never went to fast idle in 28k miles. The only symptoms of a regen were lumpy running at slow speed and the fans staying on a long time after engine stop if it had started regen but not finished.

I trust your word on that as I didn't have the filter on mine, but it's still noticeable to a steady idle when it's kicked in?

Tef is correct! You'll also get a noticable increase in power at higher revs as the ecu injects more diesel than normal during regen.

No mine's 2006/7 PD, don't do many miles, definitely got a DPF (0GG), but no symptoms touch wood! However I do do as you suggest and hold it on 3k for an 11kms stretch of m'way near here, and rev it out to 4.5k in the gears getting it there. The rest of the roads are either bends or hilly, so it doesn't spend much time in 6th, hence lousy mpg around 40-45 max.
