I took my advanced driving test in 2008, best thing I ever did in my opinion...

Insurance is a funny thing... it all depends on "personal circumstances".... I have two cars, and have both insured through the IAM insurance scheme with IAM Surety... So far they have been doing me a good deal, one car, my main car carries my full no claims, the other I purchased last year just to use for work, doing almost 100 miles a day... so I was starting a new policy with no... no claims discount..

I did try some of these companies that do multicar, but doing it through IAM Surety both cars cost me around £650 a year, the cheapest multicar was in excess of £1000 :(

So in my case they have saved me quite a bit over 4 years... including halving my home insurance policy...

What you learn from the course is greater than the saving you make IMHO.
Like Stuart I insure [one] of my cars with IAM Surety, mainly as most other companies don't seem to note IAM membership.
I get a better policy for the same price or slightly cheaper than the cheapest on one of the many comparison websites. Though I do have to do prove the quote I obtained before Surety reduce the policy.
When you add the £30 membership per year then the saving is usually negated in my case.

What's bizzare is that whilst the IAM course can net you a insurance discount the police advanced driver qualification achieved after a total of 7 weeks full time training, strict asessment and leading to a driver that is safe and confident to drive on public roads where safe proportionate and necessary using their legal exemptions up to 120mph does not.

I know many of these guys that spend years on end driving to a standard far in excess of the average driver responding to incidents daily carving their way through traffic safely without incident - yet the insurance companies couldn't care less. Its all a scam.
