After looking at the engine of my 2006 Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro, i was wondering how many things were actually changed on the engine itself. As in parts. So i stumbled upon a few 'numbers' lol. If someone could tell me what they mean and what they're from i'd be forever grateful.

Here it goes:

{
Werk : 026
Date : 100806
Line: 2
Part : 059 064 CA
}

059 129 086 M > I've got 2 of those? both have years 2010 on them? I have no idea what it is nor why it was changed.

I've also managed to record some very scary things ( at least theyre scary for me ) under the hood. Seems like carbon deposit around one of the hoses, also what i believe it to be an oil leak of some sort. Will upload video in about 30 mins. I'd appreciate if someone could tell me is it anything i should be worried about or not.

Swirl flap motors :)

On your sticker:- Date = Production date of 10/08/2006

My best guesses on rest:- Werk = Production plant 26, Line = Production line 2, Part = Your base engine part no

Seems like carbon deposit around one of the hoses,

I have that on mine... it was there before I had work on on engine... I can't remember if that was cleaned after work done... but will check my video... but I consider that normal...

Look at below video... pause at point 0:07...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mbjzUMCBf2Q#!

You will note on turbo there is black pipe from air filter box... that is the fresh air... the silver pipe with the rubber union is the charge pressure/air from the turbo...
The other pipes from engine becoming one and going into turbo is the exhaust gases to make turbo spin...

Google for SSP 350 &/or SSP 325...

also what i believe it to be an oil leak of some sort.

Are you losing oil rapidly? if not it may just be ingress from age/use of engine and not anything to worry about...

I'm not lying when i say this, im going to sleep like a baby tonight because my worries have somewhat vanished. thanks so much on the info. Makes sense now. Its just that when i was purchasing this car, all my family and friends were advising to go and get a brand new VW Golf for the same price, i insisted on the A6. More than happy with the decision, its just now im scared the previous owner didn't reveal to me any major problems or even minor ones. Here in Australia the VW AUDI dealers are a rip off. A new A6 3.0 TDI QUATTRO would cost approx $120k AUD. Convert that into pounds or euros and you'll see what i mean. Services cost in excess of $600 ( basic ). Previous owner advised to take it to a VW dealer, he thought i'd have more luck with them. They wanted to charge him $1000 for changing his battery in the boot, even tho it didn't need changing. Its ridiculous. Really. Good VW/AUDI mechanics in Australia are rare as hens teeth.

Thumbs up for the video of the engine. Looks remarkable.

I've done full service at home, all pads & discs... AMI, DAB & Graphical PDC retro... twice had interior out bar the roof trim and dash... front & rear bumper off for various checks, realignments, etc...

I've seen engine bay stripped... viewed chassis underneath several times...

I lack experience but will help with anything I can , just like all the other great poster's here on VWAF!... the many are strong!

Any P/N's, PDF's, photos, videos you wish to have to make comparison/use for servicing PM or post thread...

WE can't let our down under pal's down can we! :D

They are well built cars, design is good, features are stonking... too many times I've been to drive other brand car (& owned in past)...

IMO the A6 rocks :) especially with a 3.0 TDi/Tip/Quattro... no wonder my bank accounts been emptying rapidly to keep it :p

Those stains look normal to me I think if there was anything to worry about they'd be shiny like fresh oil stains

Here we are, i recorded this with a Go Pro Hero2 camera. You can see on acceleration it 'wobbles' a tiny bit. Also when decelerating you can see how erratic it is. I can feel it get worser. It actually slows down the car and then makes it go faster- all in 2 seconds. Also when im standstill i can hear every second a thump. Very strange sound. It is coming from the engine also. But it happens in regular intervals. When scanned with scanner no erros apart from battery regulator and coolant thingy. Still waiting for my own scanner lol

I can say categorically mine does not do this whilst driving... even when my revs at idle fluctuate there are no transmission noises or any other kind of thumps...

I'm :( to say those flucations are huge in comparison to mine...

Mine is purely engine noise in line with the rev fluctuation... the thumping maybe your torque converter (not sure if you have Auto), maybe have gearbox checked or run diags/measuring blocks on that...

IIRC you can have laptop in car with some MVB's running to see what tranny doing...

Cwizard

Yeah mine is auto... i do think it is the torque converter. If it is, im in for the most expensive fix for an Audi. Its got to be more than $10,000. It all points to that. :-(

Will keep youse updated.

The clutch generates briefly (about 500 ms) noises or vibrations/juddering when changing gear.

Note: This entry only applies to vibrations/juddering during the control phase of the converter clutch.

The converter condition can be checked in MVB 007/3 (converter open/ convertercontrol/ converter shut).

Above is extract from a technical service bulletin... I don't think this particular TSB apply to your car as it is newer... but you can see diagnostics can be done without removal of tranny...

Get some diags done on tranny... if you PM an external email I will send you the PDF...

When i turn on the car i hear liquid bubbling from the engine compartment.... Anyone had any similar sounds? What could it indicate? Very curious. Also i noticed revs more bumpy when that is happening. Come to think of it, when they scanned it a coolant error came up previously. Would that somehow have anything to do with the weird bubbling sound? Any help appreciated!

Sounds like a blocked Plenum drain.

Could be, but why would it make that sound only when i turn on the engine? Including the revs being more bumpy. Maybe water pump? I'm out of ideas.

Here it is, could anyone indicate to me what is causing revs do jump around while driving?

After looking at that linked thread my reaction was :yikes:... I agree with view in that thread that some heat issue must have caused the GP's to go like... considering GP's are cheap at a certain age it maybe wise to just replace so they are at their best...

Back to your log...

RE glowplugs if you clear fault has it come back?

If you view gearbox from below there is plate with its number on... if you number is higher than one in TPI you can disregard TPI as not applicable...

RE 00739 - Coolant Circulation Pump (V50)

Fault frequency is 4, to do physical check view under plenum chamber cover... here is link to some info and image to ref against when viewing in PC... Link:- V50 Audi A6 4F (http://www.audi-portal.com/en/diagnostic/actuators_18773.html)

Has fault returned after clearing? if it has returned I've seen a thread where someone refurbished their one rather than replace it...

You may find it if you search on VWAF... if I find will post link... this thread has some viewpoints on related fault Link:- http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?130547-Fault-code-00739

My usual PC PSU blew up... so no access to data... will soon rebuild and get you P/N & price... maybe someone else will pop along with info...

Guessing by your post in glow plug thread the fault comes back on glow plugs then?

Cwizard
27-12-2012, 01:04 PM
The fault used to come up rarely. Now its back every time i turn the ignition on. Also when i put the temp to HI i hear absolutely loud bubbling noise from the engine compartment. it reminds me of something just about to blow due to pressure issues. I turned the TEMP back to LO and it stopped! I wont be testing it again anytime soon just for the heck of it. Too scared tbh. :-(

My best guess is the gurgling that you are hearing is due fault with the coolant valve/pump in plenum chamber (V50)... IIRC the coolant is not only pumped around engine but gearbox and the AC/heater matrix... will fish out info if get my other PC online or find on web...

I still can't get to the bottom of those revs jumping up and down while driving. I've even noticed since yesterday that my gearbox has been very clucky when changing into 3rd from 4th and into 5th from 4th.

Your symptoms seem to be more and more following the TPI Link:- ZF 6HP19A tiptronic gearbox (A6 3.0 TDI Quattro) (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?141671-ZF-6HP19A-tiptronic-gearbox-%28A6-3-0-TDI-Quattro%29)

As discussed in IM I will do video of my MVB's of gearbox for you :) ...

Here is an extract from the TPI....

Customer statement / workshop findings

2. Vibrations/juddering during the control phase of the converter clutch (see Note under Cause)
Vehicles with 6 speed automatic gearbox (09L).

Technical background

The clutch generates briefly (about 500 ms) noises or vibrations/juddering when changing gear.

Note: This entry only applies to vibrations/juddering during the control phase of the converter clutch.
The converter condition can be checked in MVB 007/3 (converter open/ convertercontrol/ converter
shut).

http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg629/gupsterg/2_7%203_0%20TDi%20stuff/GearboxMVB_zpsf8eb77fb.jpg

So use MVB 01 03 07 in module 2...

Note 1 (red lines) Torq.Con.slip is the difference between engine revs and transmission revs...

Note 2 (blue line) Torq.Con.Clutch status, without going in depth from what I've been reading explained below :Blush2:...

TC Open = when Torq.Con is free wheel allowed greater variation in slip (also when tran.cold)...

TC Reg = when Torq.Con being regulated to only slip between a range... highest figure I noted was 160 /min in Torque converter slip data window 4 of MVB 07

TC Locked = when Torq.Con is locked fully, no slippage, this occur when engine speed & transmission speed match...

Again all of this is kept as simple so I can make sense to myself & you :Blush2:...

Besides the revs/sounds in video as to what occurring in driving style (green/yellow lines), brake light switch window will show BRAKE when I brake..

Right heres the video...

Now if you have torque converter issue then slippage will be great in TC reg mode...

We can log Measuring block #7, which will show TCC status in field #3 (open, control, or closed) as well as TCC slip in field #4 (RPM difference). For the 5-speed, VW TSB specified to replace the TC if the slip was over 120 RPM in control or over 10 RPM when closed.

Ok, don't know where to start from....

I called an Audi dealership that was about 100kms or so away from me (furthest). They gave me a good price for oil+filter change so decided to take it. It was 2 hours notice BTW for the booking.
This is what they've found:

1.Requires 6 glow plugs $626
2.Front discs and pads $1050
3.front and rear undertray broken

4.transmission sump bent upwards $1500
As for this they said that the previous owner probably hit a big rock and it damaged the transmission oil sump. They cannot say whether it has any effect on the operation of the gearbox itself. But they do recommend fixing that.
They said that they'll replace the sump, filter, oil, gasket and a few more things as far as i can remember. They also said that the tranny isn't showing any signs wear.

NUMBER 5. Pulsation dampner!
They told me this caused the REVS to fluctuate while stationary and while driving.
It costs a staggering $120 including fitting.:aargh4:

Well there you are Gup, go on and change that and the fluctuation should stop immediately... only $120...

I know for my VIN there is an issue with the crankshaft dampener/pulley... when I viewed mine it all looked good...

Just so we are on the same page of the book... look at below photo... is the pulsation dampener the big black pulley (outlined in pink)...

I've been looking all over the internet and cannot find a single picture of the pulsation dampener thingy. The Audi technician told me a rubber seal has deteriorated..or the dampener thingy is leaking oil.. thats as much as i remember. I cannot confirm that whats circled in pink is that actual part. It might be... Sorry i can't be of much help. When i do take my Audi back i will try and take a few photos and also get more details about it including part numbers etc....
You might have better luck asking someone that understands how pulsation dampeners work and where they are located....

Gonna continue checking the net.... like a pirate!

Hi chap :),

Any update?

Today I was able to make more sense of the TPI/TSB... Link:- ZF 6HP19A tiptronic gearbox (A6 3.0 TDI Quattro) - Page 2 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?141671-ZF-6HP19A-tiptronic-gearbox-%28A6-3-0-TDI-Quattro%29&p=786001#post786001)

So from understanding firstly check serial number of gearbox if it need update software & oil... next it seems MY05 eg 2004 cars are more likely to need the SW & oil change... next point is to get MVBs via VCDS/Diags done, then decide oil/next step...

They came bundled up all together. When i took the package i heard metal of metal knocking noises. Is that ok packaging? Would it cause any damage to them? All of them together in bubble wrap.

Should be ok, not ideal package, mine were individually packed in cardboard boxes... quick check you can do before fitting with multimeter...

Use an ohm meter to check the resistance between the thread and the connector.
Resistance should be below 6 ohms or so. It may be very small (under 1 ohm).
High resistance or infinite resistance indicates a bad plug.

Great thread chaps - hope things are looking dandy now Cwizard. Needless to say I'm now crapping myself at some of the potential issues!!

The pink circle in the photo above is the crank pulley for the auxillary belt. I know because I've had to replace it! My aux belt snapped at 100k miles. Also had to replace one of the guide pulleys and the tensioner pulley.

Did you get the pulsation damper fitted in the end? Was it on the fuel line?

Yeah, I know that's also a damper but the part alone costs £250 so nothing like this mysterious $120 to fix the issue on overrun. I had to replace mine when the aux belt snapped and the whole job was £500. (Other than a service, I've yet to have any work done that doesn't cost at least £500! A single rear damper was £720 fitted, and none of this is at a dealership.)

For $120 it must be something to do with the fuel line and I can't see how that will sort the revs on overrun. To my mind its got to be something to do with the gearbox software...

I've given the GPs to the dealership to change. They also changed the pulsation damper including some hoses and thingys. I also had a coolant flush. All in all, car feels more responsive. Revs fluctuation is still there tho, including the fluctuation while decelerating.
Going to get the tranny flushed and oil change to see if that helps with the revs while driving. Doing many k's since my last post. No problems other than those unexplained rev issues. Brake light has come on and i can't find genuine brakes+pads (front) anywhere. Only $tealerships have them. 1 grand to get em changed tho.

I genuine brakes+pads (front) ....1 grand to get em changed tho.

You're kidding right! I've done the rears myself and it was a doddle. Genuine parts from the dealer were the same price as aftermarket (about £100 for brakes and discs - though I think that was with 15% discount as part of the Colbornes club for owners with cars over 3 yrs old). Fronts will be more but not 10 times. I wouldn't worry about getting genuine parts. Decent brand alternatives will be fine and its not a difficult job if you have the tools. I have another set of pads in the garage ready and they cost £35 from the local autofactors and include all the necessary replacement bolts and clips.

^^^Mat a grand in Aussie money...that's circa £650 in GBP.

Even so that's double what we pay as had mine done all around and it was £320 supply and fit, but methinks servicing attracts that premium down under :(

Would imagine that a UK Audi main dealer would charge similar to Wizards Oz price though for supply and fit?
