All,
Chap sent by PF Jones came and fitted a towbar to the A7 today, good install, just his Westfalia coding box seems to have given a me an issue. As it was after 5:00pm when all this surfaced, he buggered off and said call you in the morning????
Coding on my Unit 34 - Level control before towbar fit is 008000
Coding after the fit is still 008000.
However I get an air suspension fault on the dashboard and a DTC in VCDS telling me the coding is incorrect - presumably because it has not been told about the towbar module???????
Does anyone have a coding number for a 2011/12 A6 or A7 with a towbar that I could try - the Long Coding helper has no help!
Cheers
Jon
And it was all going soooo well!

you need to enable the trailer module in the CAN gateway
theres still no info on rosstech regarding the c7 so i cant have a look but you will need to code the module so it suits the equipment fitted to your car

Hi Chris, my CAN gateway is all configured, the chap had a hand held from Westfalia which did all that, it just didn't know about my very new Air Suspension.
I've check Ross Tech too and I couldn't find any info either.
The coding only has 3 bytes, so it can't be that hard! Westfalia should know and I'm gonna speak with them in the morning, if any one knew the answer I could fix it tonight and sleep easy!

Oh so the issue is with the air suspension module not the trailer hitch?
Is VCDS showing nothing at all in that module? You might just have to live with the error until RT find the coding for your new module - I had this problem on a 2012 A5 which had new modules and RT had no coding avaliable for them.

The towbar function is pretty cool though, when the electrics are connected an image of a trailer hitch section appears on the back of the car when you are in 'Car' mode on the MMI, where you change the Comfort - Auto - Dynamic thing.

I'm sure Westfalia will have the coding for the latest generation of Module, as they doubtless subscribe to the Audi documentation stuff

OK, so looking through all the labels files in VCDS, I found this for module 34 of the A8
;---------------------------------------------------
;
; coding

;---------------------------------------------------
;
;
C00,Level Control System (J197) Coding
C01,00?xxxx: Headlight Leveling
C02,1 = Internal = Level Sensor Information via Level Control System (J197)
C03,2 = External = Level Sensor Information partially via Headlight Leveling
C04,00x?xxx: Front Axle Height (Standard ~416 mm from Wheel Center to Fender)
C05,0 = -25 mm / 1 = -20 mm / 2 = -15 mm / 3 = -10 mm / 4 = -5 mm
C06,5 = 0 mm (No Change) / 6 = +5 mm / 7 = +10 mm / 8 = +15 mm / 9 = +20 mm
C07,00xx?xx: Rear Axle Height (Standard 398 mm from Wheel Center to Fender)
C08,0 = -25 mm / 1 = -20 mm / 2 = -15 mm / 3 = -10 mm / 4 = -5 mm
C09,5 = 0 mm (No Change) / 6 = +5 mm / 7 = +10 mm / 8 = +15 mm / 9 = +20 mm
C10,00xxx?x: Trailer Hitch
C11,0 = Standard (ONLY 4E0-910-533-C & 4E0-910-533-D)
C12,1 = Trailer Hitch NOT installed (without Trailer Control Module)
C13,2 = Trailer Hitch installed (with Trailer Control Module)
C14,00xxxx?: Country
C15,0 = Rest of World (RoW/Standard)
C16,1 = North American Region (NAR)
;
Assuming I need to set the trailer hitch stuff to 2, can someone expertly convert 00xxx?x being 2 into which of the byte / bit combinations for the 3 byte coding currently set as 008000.
I'm guessing that needs to become 008020 from the above, which is easy to code in, but am I interpreting the data correctly?
What about those customers who don't have access to VCDS?
What have PFJones said about this?

Rest assured they are working very hard on this, I had a call at 08:28 this morning and they are working on a solution
That's what we like to see - please keep the thread updated.
Coding instructions for the Westfalia electrics kit on an A7 are here - http://www.westfalia-automotive.de/fileadmin/templates/pdf/e_anlagen/305/e305385391101-007.pdf
Adjusting the coding The AM code required can be found in the “coding supplement” on the Audi dealer portals (including ServiceNet).
– Connect a suitable vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system to the vehicle via an online connection, e.g. the vehicle
diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-.
– Select (Functions and Components) ((Funktions und Bauteilauswahl)).
– Select the “Direct input of AM code for vehicle alteration” (“Direkteingabe AM-Code für Fahrzeugumbau”) testing programme
from within Action Management (AM).
– When prompted, enter the corresponding code (050 200).
– Code the control unit in the self-diagnosis using the VAS tester:
• 69 trailer function
o 008 Codierung
Masterbyte-Index (Hex-Code):
0. ...
1. 09 -> 00
2. 08 -> 00
3. ...
4. ... etc.
– Call up the fault memory of all control units and delete the “Undervoltage” (“Unterspannung”) fault as necessary.
– Test towing functions using a suitable tester (with load resistors) or a trailer.

Hi Sam,
Yes that's the printed booklet that comes with the towbar, the coding it refers to is that of the trailer module number 69. I have the issue with module 34.
After about 6 phone calls, and some sterling work, no one actually knows the coding for an Air Suspension (J197) module on an A7, so I'm off to SP Diagnostics (PF Jones got them to call me) tomorrow and they are going to plug me into VAS for free, as they want to know how to code the air suspension for future reference.
support@ross-tech have given me a pretty good steer too although they do not have a complete coding for the module either - I'll tell all tomorrow, but it's safe to say the problem of coding a towbar on an air suspension A7 is solved.

Right, so I spent nearly 3 hours at SP Diagnostics and we recoded the car using VAS to install the tow bar.
The correct coding for the air suspension module is 008001, with bit 1 of byte 2 (0,1,2) being used to indicate the tow bar is fitted.
However, the VAS stuff also coded:
The rear electric boot hatch
The parking sensors
The adaptive headlights
I think it also changes the rear lights so if you put the fog lights on, it doesn't light them on the car, just the trailer, then you don't get a load of red light reflected off your caravan! I'm going to test this.
The long and short of it is that currently the after market tow bar fitters haven't caught up with new Audi technology.
PF Jones are definitely honest people, and the Westfalia towbar is very good, I'd get the coding done at an independent Audi Specialist who has the VW Audi VAS system, and not pay the £70 coding to PF Jones until the Westfalia Coding unit is improved.

This has happened to me with my install, many thanks for posting.
