In regard to a b8 Audi having Bluetooth fitted from new, is there any easy way to tell from a picture if a car has Bluetooth ?

e.g. To know if an Audi has cruise control, you would normally look out for a 2nd stalk below the indicator

No way of knowing just by looking. You need to press the phone button and see if it does anything.

I wonder could you tell by the radio. I see on some radios that they only have 4 buttons :

1. Radio 2. Media 3. Car 4. Setup

16308

And then on other radios, the have 6 buttons :

1. Radio 2. Media 3. Car 4. Setup 5. Info 6. Tel

16309

So would a car that has a radio as above - with 6 buttons automatically have bluetooth due to the button labelled " TEL " ?

When I purchased my car, it had the 6 buttons, but bluetooth was not installed during as a factory fit opton. I did get it retrofitted as part of the deal though.

No, I think that's maybe a difference between S and SE spec, i.e. different sound systems. I have the 6 buttons on my 58, but no bluetooth.

right. So when you bought your car with the 6 button radio, what was the purpose of the TEL button then ?

Forgive me if Im wrong, but I was under the impression that basic bluetooth was installed as standard on all the A4s? I didn't ask for it on mine and got it anyway....although it is S-line...

The TEL button has no purose. I can't remember what happens when you press it, possibly the screen changes and a message like "Function not installed" pops up. I will check.

My SE has this button, it displays something like 'phone not installed'.

Don't the cars with high/low phone prep installed have a small aerial on the roof at the back..or is that for sat nav?

I have bluetooth phone prep low, my car came with the sharkfin aerial which I think contains GPS and GSM/3G aerials, neither used in my case as I don't have GPS or a phone cradle.

It is there so that the telephone function can be selected for those with bluetooth installed.

I thought phone prep low included the cradle connector inside the central armrest? Curious!

Not always (i dont think?). All the hire cars I've had out (apart from the a8) had phone prep low and none had the cradle in the armrest.

I thought the cradle was part of phone prep high?

I thought a general rule was if the sharkfin was present, so was some sort of Bluetooth.

To find out what options any given Audi has fitted at factory, you can always ring customer services and ask them and give them the reg.

Only in the last couple of years - I think it was either the 2009 or 2010 model year it changed on and it was Bluetooth Basic that came as standard.

Bluetooth Low has cradle

Bluetooth High has cradle + RSAP (Remote Sim Access Profile - waste of time and money!)

High has the option of a handset

I can confirm that when I press "TEL", the screen changes to one with the normal border around the outside, with the text "Telephone not installed!", as if the car was surprised to discover that fact.

I dont know much about these bluetooth low and high things in Audi's but it seems fairly basic that they still need a cradle

Like in my current car ( 2005 Audi A3 ) , I get in , pair my phone with the car bluetooth and away I go, no other devices needed , just my mobile phone and thats it, to make a call, I just pick up my mobile, go to contacts on my phone ( not on another device ) and dial and it just goes over the speakers of my car, no other device needed

cradle isn't needed - the idea is that if you have one you can use the aerial on the roof and charge your phone - only problem with that is 1) audi dont have any up to date cradles other than iphone, 2) no phones have antenna ports any more!

Contacts all sync in the mmi with bluetooth basic. Works well

My 58 plate S-Line has the telephone prep low. The tel button allow the phone to be dialled using the central dial button (no MMI). I DO have the space to fit a cradle in the armrest but then again following a change in phone which has no antenna slot there is no benefit in getting a new cradle. I suspect the advance in phones means that the cradle has become obselete. Anyway I get all functionality I need through blue tooth.

Good point. I find theres lots of room in that arm-rest, and theres a 12v socket in there too. If you get a 12v - mobile phone adaptor its the ideal place to put your phone. Means when you are driving your phone is synced, charging and out of sight! :)

if they could build a cradle with a re-radiating antenna and a usb point to charge your phone it would be ideal - cant understand why they dont do it.........

Might have a crack at wiring one of these to the roof antenna one day

Don't know if this has been covered but with btooth low the car comes with the shark-fin on the roof. Mines has the cradle plate in the arm rest that allows you to charge the phone and it uses the shark-fin for a better reception. At the moment I have not bothered with the cradle and the btooth functionality I get is brilliant, only thing missing is that the phone does not get charged and it does not use the shark-fin.

Btooth high on the other hand I don't think has any way of identifying it visually and apparently all models after a certain age have btooth as standard.

Hope this helps and has not already been covered.
