Hello, I recently ordered a RNS 510 MFD3 Version C from eBay for my Mk. 6 Golf and am waiting for it to be delivered.
I also want to install a bluetooth module with this unit but I'm not sure what's the difference between the various units for sale.
All I really need is something that will do the usual receiving/making calls/SMS through my RNS-510 and also play music via bluetooth from my Android phone.
I've seen some models on eBay-
3C8 035 730 A2DP. (Premium bluetooth)
5K0 035 730
The first one seems to be a lot more expensive.
Anyone know what's the difference between them and would the cheaper unit suit my needs?
I did a search on this section of the forum but there are so many RNS-510 threads that I wasn't sure where to post.
Thanks for any feedback.

I've got the Premium Bluetooth kit. It is a fantastic unit in terms of performance, but drives me insane and I wouldn't waste good money on one.
Problems are:
It only works reliably with a Nokia, and then not all of them. Definately no iPhone. If you are lucky, stand on one leg and the moon is in the right phase you might get it to work with an HTC, a Blackberry or even a very old (or very recent) Samsung but there is no guarantee and performance is flakey if you are lucky. It needs an rSAP compatible phone which was/is Nokia technology and no-one else would licence it. It isn't official on Android devices so even if you can wangle a way to get it to work the next software upgrade will possibly stuff you up.
Even when working with a Nokia, it can frustratingly fall over or refuse to pair, or just lock up. If you are lucky, you can get it all to work again by just turning off the ignition and waiting a few mins. If not, be ready to delete the pairing and try to re-pair the phone. Sometimes you are unlucky. I've never managed to get my wife's Nokia to re-pair after a falling out 6 months ago.
Only 3 phones can be paired. Once you are full, you can only delete pairings by using a paired phone or by plugging in VCDS and rolling up your sleeves. The bluetooth management interface is pants and the manual (if you can get one) isn't much better.
When texts come in, they show up on the highline display. No copies to your phone for later. No facility to reply.
I could go on, but you get the picture.
My recommendation is to fit either a Nokia kit or even better a Parrot. If you have the steering wheel buttons the Parrot kit can be fitted with the MultiCAN accesory, so it uses the buttons completely seamlessly. Radio is muted, car speakers are used, everything works fine and it doesn't lock up. Cost about £100, including interface leads.

Thanks for the response, Teflon.
Do you know if there's VW Premium Bluetooth as well as a more basic version? Here is an example of the Premium Bluetooth for sale on eBay: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/OEM-VW-Bluetooth-RNS-510-RCD-510-Voice-control-/250989603652?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item3a70256b44#ht_6684wt_1037
and a more basic (I think) model:
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/VW-BLUETOOTH-KIT-RCD-MFD3-RNS-RNS510-5K0-035-730-2011-/270940195939?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f154b4c63#ht_3001wt_1270
Anyone know the difference between the two of them?
I would also consider the Parrot kit. Can it be integrated fully with the RNS 510 and does it need to be programmed with VAGCOM to work fully?
I've also heard Mobridge and Fiscon bluetooth being mentioned but I don't know much about either.
All I need something inexpensive that can pair my Samsung (Android) phone to my RNS 510.

Here's what I can tell you about the history, which I have to admit isn't completely up to date.................
The VW Premium Bluetooth Kit came in about 2007 when they replaced the original handsfree kit that had phone cradles. I got mine in July 2008, complete with all the problems I mentioned. It was at the same time they introduced the pop-out keypad in the dash, next to the coin holder. I find I use mine with the keypad or the steering wheel buttons 'cos it's a bit fiddly on screen.
The similar equipment on Audi and Skodas worked okay with any phone. I had a blissfull test drive in an A6. :D Several people were retrofitting the Skoda kit and one or two folks even pulled out the VW kit and put Skoda in. The Fiscon kit was also highly regarded (if a little expensive).
I was still exchanging EMails and letters with VW customer service toward the end of 2009, as were a lot of other people. :zx11: There were lots of threads on here and also in the ICE section fo the forum. The published list of compatible phones was older than me and their position was "just buy a Nokia".
I looked to buy a Mk6 Golf in April 2010, at which time the dealer and VW themselves were still telling me it was rSAP phones only. I've looked again at the Golf brochure dated 1/4/2010 and it clearly states rSAPphones only. The description is no longer Premium Bluetooth, they are calling it "Telephone Preparation"
There were some better options once the white coloured highline display became available on the Passat and I guess they also opened up for the Mk 6 Golf. The functionality was a little reduced (to the same as Audi had had for years), but you could get it to talk to your iPhone. I thought at that time they had changed the name of the kit, but the advert you posted is still calling it Premium Bluetooth. To retrofit you needed to have all the right bits for your model and code it in with VCDS.
Eventually VW started offering a re-badged version of the Bury bluetooth kit, which had the same functions but modded software so that it showed a VW badge on screen.
I'm sorry that I can't give you a definitive answer on the 2011 kit you've seen for sale. Maybe someone else has been down this track more recently.
If you really must have mobile phone functions visible on your radio and highline display then maybe it will do the job. But my advice would be to do a LOT of research over on the ICE part of the forum and maybe also the UK Golf forum to make sure it is bomb proof. You'll also need access to £200+ of VCDS software to code it in. If you don't have the Multi Function Steering Wheel it would seem a bit of an neccesary expense to me.
If all you need is access to a car kit then I'd go for something less risky. That's what I fitted to my wife's car and tyo my Golf. Good luck anyway! :nervous:

Thanks again Teflon. Useful info there. :approve:
All I really need is something fairly basic that will connect to my RNS 510 and display call details on the screen. It doesn't necessarily have to connect to the highline display also. My car doesn't have the MFSW.
I'll keep looking for a solution anyway.

For what it's worth, I have the Fiscon Basic kit on mine. I don't have an RNS, only an RCD310, so the only integration is to mute the stereo and use the speakers etc. I have the MFSW and Highline display, so the fiscon works through that. The Fiscon Plus integrates fully with the RNS and the touch screen becomes the interface. I can only say I could recommend the Fiscon that I have, I had an issue when I upgraded to an Iphone 4s, but a software update on the fiscon sorted it.

I had the VW Premium (pop out of dash keypad and full display between the dials) on my 2005 Passat, the best integrated system I've had, although as has been said here before it only really works well with Nokia phones - Nokia wrote the software for VW back then.
Then I had the VW badged Bury unit in my 2010 Passat, which in my opinion is really not very good at all, a cheap bolt on and I wouldn't have it again.
Have you looked for further details here http://www.vwcruise.com/Genuine-Vw-Bluetooth.html and here http://www.vwcruise.com/Vw-Fiscon-Bluetooth.html which explain the differences between the two main options. This site can be useful for many VW retrofitted options.
I have the Fiscon Basic Plus with my RNS510. It is a great piece of kit and works perfectly with my iPhone 4.
I don't have a full MFD or MFSW (yet) but works great with the head unit alone.

thanks, how much did you pay for the Fiscon Basic? And is it plug and play?

Hi,
I got a good deal from an ebay seller £160 delivered.
Yes it is plug and play.
Very easy to fit.
Take out head unit
plug cable harness into head unit and existing wiring (piggyback)
plug microphone in (i ran mine under the drivers side out to fuse box)
run the cable down the passenger side console
remove black fascia (passenger side centre console bottom cover, 1 torx screw and gentle leverage downwards and towards engine)
plug fiscon box in the wiring you fed down
put back together
code option 77 (i think, telephone) in VCDS
Thats it
Took me around 30 minutes all in. (I haven't yet plumbed mic in behind A-Pillar, afraid because of airbag)
Hope that helps

Is it a RNS 510? I don't know what a RH 510 is. Anyway, the RNS 510 doesn't have bluetooth built in. It needs to be purchased separately.
