hi all, thismorning i fitted my new coilovers to my golf any way that went fine, when i started her up i had the amber/tellow steering wheel on the dash (power steering was fine) so i have had in the past this light on and after a drive down the road it goes out, anyway on my way home the light went RED and i lost power steering, anyway i plugged it in at a garage on my way home using LAUNCH and it had a code of steering torque sensor, i deleted the code but my steering light is now RED all the time and i have no power steering, can someone please help?????

right i have since used VCDS to plug my car in Big thanks to Rob, your a star, and way i can not erase this code without it coming back, ive checked that i have power out of the 80 amp fuse by the battray and the fuse in the dash is fine, ive googled it and found that this fault could mean a new rack:( here is what VCDS has to say

PS did you change anything to do with the steering wheel? My coding is 44 and yours is 22...might be it?
i didnt do anything to the steering wheel, all i done was remove the TRE's since i got home ive checked all the fuses and re scaned it (i posted up my read as you posted) ive googled it and ive seen people having new racks because of this fault, i just cant believe its not something simple, i will check the code, thanks Rob

Try this first
Checking Steering Torque Sensor (G269)
Prerequisites:
Ignition ON
Engine ON (Idle)
System voltage at least 11.0 V.
[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Group 001
[Go!]
Field 2: Steering Torque Sensor (G269)
Turn the Steering Wheel multiple times completely to the left and right. The Torque Values should change.
If the Torque Values do change, it's most likely an intermittent Fault in the Wiring/Connectors.
If the Torque Values do NOT change, the Sensor itself or the Power Supply (Terminal 15) might be faulty.
Group 004
[Go!]
Field 2: Power Supply (Terminal 15), Specification: "Term. 15 ON"
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
may shed some light
PS i change you chassis code on the scan for security ;)

right ive had a little joy but not a lot, here goes i followed the info Rob and everything went fine until i had to go from lock to lock, as soon as i touched full right lock the steering light went RED again, so i deleted the codes which were angle sensor and torque sensor, anyway no joy so i started again, only this time after putting in code 40168 i get in and when i try to turn on basic settings it say not possible:Blush2: and now i have the traction light on with the code being steering angle sensor that i cant clear, it just comes back, im now 99% sure my problems are to do with setting the rack settings but for some reason i cant do it, any ideas???

just checked it term 15 is on and in field 3 it says relay on, in field 1 it says the system status is 4????
so by the looks of it it is as it should be, but what is the system status and is 4 great, ok or very bad?
i cant complain to much ive had the car 8 months and done 15,000 miles and up to now i havent had any major issus's i hope this is something im doning wrong lol

one other thing whilst checking the term 15 the steering light started at red and then went to yellow and i have powersteering altho the light is still on, im sure this is a coding prob and fingers crossed not a rack prob,
Thank you Rob you have been great with all your help and advise, A8 tech your a star hope the info i got from the car makes some sence to you?

status 4 will indicate the torque setting for the steering rack resistance for sporty, normal or disabled drivers etc altering the feel of the steering to suit
Ok clear the fault codes and drive the vehicle in straight line for 20 meters and see if the light goes out, if goes from yellow to red you need to set the full lock basic setting
clear codes if possible and follow this
in this order
[Select]
[44 - Steering Assist]
[Coding-II - 11] or if that function is not available then use [Sec.Access - 16] instead
Enter 40168, to enable the basic setting.
[Do it!]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 060
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
After a successful basic setting, field 1 should say "OK".
[Done, Go Back]
To make sure the basic setting was succesful, check the sensor again.
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 007
[Go!]
Check field 1, the value has to be between -1.5 and +1.5 °.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
Note: After successful basic setting, the Steering Limit Stop needs to be adapted too.
Special Procedures
Steering Limit Stop Adaptation
(Engine still running)
* Center steering wheel (±10°) and hold it centered for 5 seconds.
* Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for a second.
* Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for a second.
* Center steering wheel (±10°).
* Switch OFF engine and ignition.
* Switch ON ignition.
* Wait 5 seconds.
* Steering Assist Warning Lamp should turn OFF. If it doesn't, perform a short test drive.

Thank you A8 Tech, i followed that and as if by magic it worked:approve:, even doing the angle settings, everything was perfect, so i take it for a 15 mile test drive, driving in different styles to try and get the yellow or RED light to come back on, anyway all was going well until i hit a pot hole and the light and bong done there thing and the power steering went, so i plugged in Robs lead (took laptop with me :Blush2:) and it throw up the same fault code of steering torque sensor, so i erase the code and have p/steering again and drive home, once home i check the measuring blocks again, making sure the torque figure moves when moving the steering wheel, it does, then i make sure term 15 is on, it is then i read that if both of those are correct then its a wire or connector fault, which goes with the implausable signal, so i take it i should get under the car and check all the wiring to the rack?? if it was a wire or connector fault that would explain lossing the steering when i hit a pot hole?
this is all i have thought about for the last 3 days and im at the point where even tho it is all pointing at a broken wire or connector i need someone else to agree or send me in another direction as my brain has shut down lol
I would like to say a massive thank you to Rob and A8 tech, both have helpped me out big time :beerchug:

Hi Phil, it does suggest the plug is damaged or the wiring or the pins in the plug are loose.
You need to drop down the steering rack to access the plug as its difficult to access.
The wiring shown earlier is the sensor to the steering rack motor, I would suspect the pot hole but should indicate the connector is loose.Keep us updated

ive just had one of those moments, you know where you think about everything you done and then remember something, well A8 tech what are your thoughts on this, as already mentioned i changed both hubs as well as the shocks, that included bleeding the brakes, anyway ive just remembered when i topped up the brake fluid i spilt abit (ok a fair amount) while i have a s/h rack on a subframe in the shed and had a look at it, and after checking where the torque sensor wiring plugs into there is a very strong chance the plug got covered in brake fluid, could this be the problem im getting? also the torque sensor wiring goes from the rack to column part to a motor on the back of the rack, i didnt have any bars or levers in there so all i can think is the brake fluid or it is just coincidence i now have the implausable signal? and just to put my mind at ease can you confirm that a implausable signal is a broken wire or loose connection rather than a knackered sensor?
im not being thick, i just seem to have lost the plot on this one lol

as and when we get another golf in with steering problems im going to take a week off lol, i did call a vw indy in plymouth today to ask if i was doing anything wrong all he said was drop it in at some point and he would set it for £45 and it would be fine, now im not a fan of paying someone to do what i should be able to do so i gave it a go and im 100% sure its not setting so tomorrow i will be under my car checking all the wiring and plugs, fingers crossed my saga is getting towards the end, one things for sure, i will make sure i use a funnel next time i top up my brake fluid
phil miller
19-11-2010, 12:06 AM
the saga is now over, i checked the wiring and all seemed fine, so i had a rack on a subframe in the shed, i didnt know anything about the rack and didnt fancy paying £600 for a new rack, tonight me and my mate danny set about fitting the subframe with the rack, with the idea that i couldnt lose anything, so 4 coffees 5 fags and 2 hours later (plus annoying the neighbours with my nut gun) i now have my power steering working as it should :approve: after a 10 mile test drive making sure i went over speed bumps fast all seems well, the only think is i have to track the steering and set the steering wheel straight, at the moment its abit left hand down, then i have to set the steering angle again as its pulling to the right due to the s/wheel postion, all in all im happy and have learn never to use a hammer near a mk5 rack, im sure that when i used a hammer to break the TRE's rather than a ball joint seperator its that, that caused the rack fault, a big thank you to Rob and A8 tech your info has helped loads :beerchug:

mine is looking very grubby atm, i was going to give her a clean when i got home but it will have to wait till tomorrow now :Blush2:
the saga is now over, i checked the wiring and all seemed fine, so i had a rack on a subframe in the shed, i didnt know anything about the rack and didnt fancy paying £600 for a new rack, tonight me and my mate danny set about fitting the subframe with the rack, with the idea that i couldnt lose anything, so 4 coffees 5 fags and 2 hours later (plus annoying the neighbours with my nut gun) i now have my power steering working as it should :approve: after a 10 mile test drive making sure i went over speed bumps fast all seems well, the only think is i have to track the steering and set the steering wheel straight, at the moment its abit left hand down, then i have to set the steering angle again as its pulling to the right due to the s/wheel postion, all in all im happy and have learn never to use a hammer near a mk5 rack, im sure that when i used a hammer to break the TRE's rather than a ball joint seperator its that, that caused the rack fault, a big thank you to Rob and A8 tech your info has helped loads :beerchug:
Sorry guys for digging up an old thread but I am from Ireland and facing more or less the same problem. The yellow steering wheel light has been coming on the last few days. I got a mates dad to run the diagnostics on it and we got the 00573 g269 fault code. He cleared the code, but it came back on a few miles down the road. The car is driving fine though and I have power steering. It has now been coming on and off intermittantly last couple of days. Sounds like a dodgy connection or something. I did hit a rather large pothole a couple of days or so before it start coming on.
Anyway I'm just wondering what the ultimate conclusion was here? You said you had a subframe on a rack. Do you mean you took the rack off your car and put it back on again or did you have a spare rack in your shed or something?......i.e did you actually have to replace the rack? Its a bit ambigous. And also was the ultimate conclusion outside the Ross Tech Solution guide.

Anyway any help would be much appreciated guys as it very annoying. As I say the car is driving fine but as I say just for piece of mind! :)
Thanks

Hi mate yes I did replace the rack and it sorted the problem, I've got a spare rack here if your interested mate?
Cheers mate but I actually have a B6 passat so not sure a golf rack would fit it? Also from Ireland so the logistics of getting it over might be a bit of a pain for you ! ;-0
I'm a bit relucant to change it at the moment cos as I say the car is driving fine, and power steering is working. So might just drive it till I loose powering steering.
I'm due a service, and also I'll be getting the front left bushings done. So after they have done the alignment I'll ask them to run through the reset procedure as per ross tech. I hope they have the VCDS software (its a mazda dealer...they are close to work plus used to have an RX8 so they know me well lol).
Anything else I should ask them to do thats not in the Ross Tech?
If the worst comes to the worst can you just get a rack from a breakers?......or would you suggest original. I'm not sure if it would need to be coded to the car. How much should I be looking to pay for one? Haven't costed it yet but I can only imagine what an original would cost!!
Thanks mate appreciate the offer there!

One from a breakers will be fine, you will need to set the basic settings using vcds which is easy to do, I don't think a golf rack is the same but if it is I don't mind sending to Ireland if u need any info pm me mate
Will do thanks for your help mate!
